I just wanted to make some corrections with the DSLR noise topic. If you have an ISO invariant sensor, shooting at different ISO values will not effect noise levels. Most cameras actually have a higher sensor noise at low ISO values. The main advantage of shooting at a low ISO is higher dynamic range which prevents bright stars from blowing out.
Noise goes down as you switch to Higher ISO. but Dynamic range will also go down. So from light polluted sky where you need a lot more dynamic range. Darker sky I use a Higher ISO or Gain.

Great video. My experiences with the L-Pro is the complete opposite of yours. I live in a suburban bortle 5-6, surrounded by streetlights and I image with long lenses / telescopes and DSLR. I bought the clip-in version of the filter and the images I got back with the filter was a huge, huge improvement over shooting un-filtered. Practically no gradients and a much cleaner and prettier result. I have two of them - One for my full frame DSLR and one for my crop-sensor ha-modded DSLR. Great point about dithering. I didn't really realize just how important that is until I had a near-perfect 4-hour session on Markarian's Chain completely ruined by walking noise.Paranoid as that made me, I now dither after every frame, but as you said; that is probably a waste of time. When the nights become dark enough to do AP again, I'll increase the interval to every 3 frames and see how that goes.
Interesting, the L-Pro definitely is a popular filter and lots of people love it so it probably is a good investment. We only tried it for a couple nights, maybe we should try it again and do an actual comparison
side note for dark frames with a Nikon DSLR... Cover the view finder when taking dark frames, any direct light on the view finder will show up in your exposures. Great tips... Clear skies
I image from Bortle 9. I bought an L-extreme and a triad quad band. I recommend imaging with no filter. Both filters had odd things about them that I did not like. With enough integration you can get good images from heavily light polluted areas. But from Bortle 9, in reality, to get great looking images you're going to be looking at dozens or even hundreds of hours of integration. With my monochrome camera I can get amazing images from home, but only in narrowband. I have yet to invest the huge amount of time in broadband targets at home. I do have access to a darker site, Bortle 4-5, and use that for my broadband targets.
I am in Bortle 4-5 sky, and use both a 294mc and 533mc pros, on a 8 inch newt and 72mm refactor, when the moon is out or, my neighbors choose to leave the flood lights on all night I use the L-extreme and have have very good results.
Well done y'all. I live in a bortle 9+ city and switched to Narrowband 4 years ago and never looked back. I'm using QSI690 & QSI683 monochrome cameras with 3nm Astrodon Filters. All my images are shot at 27x1200. I'm currently testing the newer color cmos cameras with various LP filters and although harder than Narrowband I'm beginning to get decent images. Although I'll never stop Narrowband. Great video. Sean

I am glad you brought up the SO common misconception that it takes longer to capture in image with Mono. Really you will get twice as much detail using a mono camera in the same amount of integration time.
I’ve always shot with a filter from my bortle 8 yard but you’ve inspired me to try the short exp technique this summer. I was spoiled by a trip to dark sky last fall, this gives me motivation to hit the yard. 👍

Hi, i have a Canon EOS 2000D that has a maximum ISO of 6400, the noise is a bit too much and i wanted to set it to 3200 or even 1600. My question was if it will affect the final result of the image, will i get the same nebula/galaxy details with a lower iso?
In low light pollution 1600 is the way to go, while in high lp you should go lower. Just raise the exposure and stack several images, you will get the same signal but with much less noise and gradient!
In India we use led's as street light how to block the light of leds ? 🤔🤔🤔 Like if I try to capture a minimum of 30 second exposure at 100 iso at 1.8 or even 2.8 all came out a OVER EXPOSED WHITE MESS 😭
im in bortle 4-5 but i still watching this;D The reason why ur target looks not that good as without a filter is because filters doesnt bring anything on a galaxy because they are shining in all wavelenghts

Hi from Texas, Paul. I'm in a Bortle 5 and M51 comes out much better without my L-enhance duo band filter with the ASI533MC pro. I'm only using the duo band for emission nebula. All my galaxies I shoot without a filter.
Even in normal photography black and white is still superior, can be sharper and better contrast over colour, for a colour camera in light pollution if not using a mono an L extreme is the one to get for Nebula. I do EAA on my Qhy 163c and use the L extreme filter and a massive difference
I've been yelling at clouds for about a year now, and this video is everything that I needed to see back then before getting started outside of Cleveland, Ohio (Bortle 7). Are broadband targets even an option for a mono camera? Thank you both for all of your great videos and information.
Just my 2 cents. From my experience i would recommend using shorter exposures and stack more frames if 1) you are living in a city and 2) you are using a cmos camera, and 3) your pc is capable of handling giant data set. Seeing is usually pretty bad in cities because of the temperature difference etc. You can take many frames and stack only the best of them, and the result will be better than stacking everything. Jon Rista from CN also posted a test he did with the asi1600mm which showed that the difference is minimum between more frames and longer exposures (well, before over exposing of course ;)
@@s5hanom979 that’ll depend on your setup. There has to be enough useful photons, but not too long because you want to get enough frames and toss out bad ones (kinda like lucky imaging). I’ve done 5-60 seconds but just by guessing it i think anything above 1 second should work
I'm visual only and I live in Las Vegas. The light pollution is horrible but dark skies are close by. I hope that Astrophotographers will care as much about light pollution even though they can get around it. It will be sad if we lose our reasons to look up in wonder.
Shooting from bortle 8/9 you will be taking so many subs that stacking will wipe any sat trails. Dark sight yes it's more of an issue simply because you have a smaller number of subs with long duration.
Yes, L-Pro sucks out too much of the nice colors in OSC leaving more of a dullish mono-chrome look. CLS-CCD filters do a better job of just rejecting the light pollution. :>).

Looks a dreadful place to stargaze! I'd say that you would be restricted to the Moon,planets,brighter double stars and obviously the Sun during the day.I'd move! it's amazing that those in power tell us not to leave of TV's on standby to stop wasting electricity but allow whoever owns those places in Las Vegas to pour all that muck out into the sky.I've never had the dubious pleasure of visiting Las Vegas but I have been to Singapore and Hong Kong which I think are two of the most light polluted cities on our planet.i did a bit of first magnitude star gazing with my monocular, Canopus, Alpha Centarui,Acrux,etc with my monocular from Canning Park, Singapore but then a laser light show started and I gave up!

I wanted to add, I have to use bias frames with my ASI2600MM in order to get my flats to work properly. Also, I take 30 flats and 30 darks.
That would be Dark Flats, similar to bias frames but not quite the same since the exposure time matches the exposure time of the flats
