Get rid of 20 lanes of traffic, and build 2 lines of rail.
Are you crazy?! I could be seated next to a poor on the train!
Are you crazy?! That would mean spending my money on society-benefiting things!
tbh even as a poor person I avoid trains whereever I can because a) in my car I can have functioning air conditioning and listen to music b) I do not have to deal with someone shitting themselves next to me and c) I CAN TRANSPORT THINGS THAT I NEED TO GET FROM A TO B.
@@hiriasbloodweaver8593 if it was available to you, you could wear headphones, on a bigger train, that has air conditioning. trains in switzerland are very large and well air conditioned. cars are fine, and people who still want to use one after good public transport is put in place should be able to do so, it's just better for everyone if good public transport is a widely available option, and would remove most people's need for a car, which would also make your life easier as a car user if you still wanted to be one. less traffic for you!
@@normieguy3803 Of course, good public transport should exist, however realistically speaking it doesn't in most areas/countries. Realistically, people use what is cheapest and most convenient.
In the ideal world, public transportation is good for short trips with little baggage, while cars are better for longer trips with much baggage (vacation, weekly shopping).
In practice however, the first issue is public transport isn't even cheaper than driving by car, so economically speaking, why should I use it? I can go to my neighboring city by car in 20 minutes which is like 30-40km, so that's around 1/20 of my gas tank, so somewhere under 4€. If I go by bus not only does it cost me 6,80€ by assuming the cheapest monthly ticket (which I won't use since I don't go there every single day), it will also take me around 45-50 minutes.
Public transportation is, especially on the countryside, simply inferior in any aspect:
-economically it's more expensive
-it takes longer
-it's less reliable/often late
-less space & comfort
-AC missing or broken most of the time
-no music/only headphones
-I can't stop to take a break wherever I want on longer trips
-less space to transport things
-often dirty/people literally pissing everywhere, taking drugs etc.
In the city, it is a viable option, but especially in the countryside...simply no way.
Yeah, that's literally a maintenance nightmare. Pretty soon that moving part is stationary anyway 🤣
Given that the line is skyscraper-sized in height and 200 m in width, that would not only be the largest moving object in existence, but would also be the largest building in existence, depending on if you count the line itself.
At this point, just suggest a Dyson sphere to power it and make it anti-gravity hover. We are so far beyond the realm of possibility that Star Trek seems downright rational.

@dannypipewrench533 😂😂😂. As an architect, I blame the client who wants to pay for it.
@@wixxietaz4733 Classic everyone just pushing the blame haha
As we transition to a post peak oil technosphere, architecture should emulate the energy efficiencies of preindustrial, time tested designs. The ostentatious embodied energy and massive energy maintenance costs of these post modern mega projects are the last hurrah of a soon to be bygone era.
There are some benefits of having this tall line like design. If done right...
You could position the structures in the path of a lot of wind, in an area with a large out of sun. Then design around these premises...
Having a line like that would act as it's own transmission lines, and transportation is simplified. You can even start making more vertically in design...
That said... cool for a book. There are better, simpler, and more effective designs.
The maintenance alone makes that impossible. It would always be broken down.
I feel like a square rectangle triangle or circle would all be so much better than a line

It is basically a city built on the sides of a lineal transit arterial. Like how the CBDs of small towns tend run along the main roads through the middle of them. It's actually a pretty good idea if the goal is to automate as much of the moving parts as possible.
@benwilms3942 Except those cities usually grow organically around an existing piece of infrastructure, they aren't build up in the middle of nowhere.
Also small towns usually aren't build in by giant walls on either side in the middle of the desert where you either die of overheating if the climate controls fail or of omega depression because you live on the lowest levels where the sun can never get to.
The giant walls are the climate control. Hence the mirror surface.

Throughout history people found somewhere with enough resources and the city was basically built around the resources, frequently resembling a circular shape. The line on the other hand... The mirror like surface, overheating around it, dividing the natural life etc
@antoinedube-cote155 that's not true. Cities are incredibly space efficient. The problem is the suburbs. If we got rid of suburbs and 95% of people lived in at least semi-dense cities we'd be perfectly fine for a long ass time.
@antoinedube-cote155 you just explained why we have to build higher and made zero point as to why we have to build in a line.

The amount of devastation, wasted labor and impracticality behind this is astounding and they're still going to do it thinking it's cool, rather than Life sustaining.
It's in Saudi Arabia since when do they care about human rights or the environment? And we also already know that their not gonna build it. It was just a commercial trick so people in the west won't look at all the violations their doing
they are doing it as an idea for sustainable cities its being built in the desert they arent really affecting much..
People think that desserts are empty and dead but really they are flourishing ecosystems full of life and creatures that have adapted to the environment. The line is bound to have devastating effects on the local wildlife and migration, I remember seeing something about how the mirror outside will confuse birds and cause heat blasts from reflecting light
The saudis already ran out of money for the project
There's already an immense amount of devastation and waste inherent to the existence of our current cities, due in part because they were not built with any care for limiting either issues. How, pray tell, are you, as a RUclips commenter with seemingly zero credentials, so sure that ideas like this would be as horrible as you imagine, or even just worse than present-day cities? Some facts or relevant data would be nice, at the very least.
Uh... Did the designers just completely forget about the tiny little thing called the square-cube law?
Walking (or even rolling) cities are infeasible, as the mass of the structure (and thus the forces applied to it's legs/wheels) would increase exponentially with the size of the structure, while the cross-section of the axles (and thus their ability to support force) would increase linearly.
Not to mention the energy costs associated with moving that much mass.
No I don't think the "designers" thought much at all about any of this except how much investment money they could get from an idea this dumb. Turns out they were wrong and not many are buying it.
Also think of the class and societal ramifications of having an exclusive city block that slowly rolls over every other neighborhood. This is one of those “we were so concerned with if we can we never stopped to think if we should”
Also the square cube law would say that a thin line is maybe the worst use of space and material to create a large living area
If years of watching Thunderfoot taught me anything - if a computer animation can do it, of couse so can we! Duh!

It's called 'Mortal Engines' from 2018...
Coruscant from Star Wars is quite similar except its not a line but a literal planet with layer after layer where the lower ones are the impoverished ones while the rich politicians, merchants were at the top. Another Piltover and Zaun in the world of Runeterra where Piltover is a very high tech city which produces all kinds of machinations combined with magic but the byproducts of said product are thrown down to Zaun a city that used to be on equal land like Piltover but fell down because of an earthquake. It is like coruscant it also has layers the upper one, middle, and lower where the lowest contain the most trash, pollution while the top has the least but overall Zaun is a hell hole no matter what layer you're on
It's like The Platform, but a city.
New cities usually pop up along major highways in US so it's not unusual to be in a line.

Adam Something pointed out that one major issue with The Line is transport. The entire metro network is extremely vulnerable to faults. One failed signal and you hold up the whole thing
Or we could just build normal cities
If everybody would think like this, we'd never progress/change. The world is changing constantly, why not try out new things? Even things like cars, cities, etc. should be challenged constantly. It might fail or succeed, but thinking that whatever we do now is the "normal", then we'd never see innovation. This doesn't mean we'll see these cities everywhere, but why not having new concepts?
