I agree with all the above, and it makes a great sound. But the 2.0 version with 129 hp and 170 nm of torque is a bit gutless for a 1500 kg car ! (but plenty of power on the wet without any traction control ! :)
+Ariel Zelada John Hennessey is a grade A douche. I didn't believe people and then I actually read up on him, and holy shit. I still can't believe what I read over a year ago. don't buy anything from him. just a warning bud.
The LS, 2JZ-GTE, RB26, and 1.3 liter twin turbo 13B rotary engines are all great and legendary engines that are great to work with. They all love making big and decent amount of power. Great presentation Nelson!
@@verttisyrjala2897 well I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings but a rotary engine is certainly not a reliable engine. Just go ask R X 8 owners how they are going.
Love my 98 six speed Corvette. Got a good deal on it in 2017 and it already had a couple of external mods to boost up the HP a bit. The performance of that LS motor for what I paid for the car is so worth it...
+Knights2theEnd There is no particular way of doing it. Some people don't even bother "breaking in" engines and just go all out from the start and haven't suffered any issues. So there is no evidence for it, although I would feel a lot more comfortable taking it easy on a new engine for a few hundred miles.
Mr. Nelson creates some of the best engine setups. The man is a complete master of the V8 engine. How awesome you got him to sit down and drop some free golden knowledge on us. This is one guy worth listening too. Thanks for this video. PS The man knows his Turbo setups just as well. Even creating his own unique turbo setups made up of varieties of different materials.
I get it! I am hesitant to replace the 50+ year old block in my Firebird. A friend once told me, "Its your car, do what ever the F&$% you want!" Don't ever build a car (or anything for that matter) to impress someone, you will always be chasing someone else's dream....
The part that discusses long stroke cranks is soooooo important. Tall deck block and keep that puppy where it's supposed to be! LS7 is extended the sleeves past the block. All of this is mentioned in his video! Smart man. Seriously, Nelson is no joke.
Dude makes some good points... I always here folks talk about building a coyote motor and my general response is "i didn't know you were rich?!". As much as folks talk shit about LS swaps they happen for a reason and most often that reason is performance to dollar. LS is hard to beat.
true. You swap an LS3 into any honda/Miata/s13, with FBO+Tune, and it immediately becomes a 10 second car. These engines are no joke and the amount of power these things can handle, on stock bottom end, is ridiculous(700whp, which is near 900hp at the crank, is considered "Safe" for Forced Induction). I have a 5th gen SS and imagine the amount of power it could have had if the weight was similar to the 4th's... We break the suspension/diff's a lot more often than blowing the motor.... A mid camshaft swap is already pushing the Camaro into mid 11's on street tires(at 4k+ lbs with driver+gas)... There's plenty of Camaro's running 10's on a big GPI camshaft. Corvette's, which sit at 3400lbs with driver+gas, is a pretty massive advantage with an engine like this.
3:57 That's Harry Bridges Ave. The recent work has made the part by the 110 freeway look really nice but as it turns into Alameda another half mile ahead of where they're shooting, it's the old Wilmington we all know and "love." (Anaheim St near Alameda develops pot holes with their own zip codes, in fact I just blew out a tire over there last month)
If your aren't familiar with what a brilliant man sounds like when he's found his true path in life, watch this. It's refreshing to hear somebody who is not only profoundly passionate about their given field of expertise, but also has the depth and accuracy and span of wisdom to match said passion. When you find the thing in life that youre MEANT to be doing, it often does not come with much difficulty, so while you might be working your ass off day in and day out, if the work you're producing doesn't flow out of your brain, and into the medium you are focusing you're efforts on as easily as air enters and exits your body, you might want to reassess your trade. To truly thrive in the world, as a member of the human race is a vividly difficult and nearly non existent phenomenon, so when you witness somebody in the midst of a brilliant life and career, it makes an impact on you in a way that's difficult to describe, but nonetheless extraordinarily beautiful to bear witness to. That we should all be so fortunate to find our paths, and to tread those paths with this caliber of brilliance. The phrase "God Speed" has never felt so poignant.
Nelson he's been around and he's pretty good. I had one of his engines and it was pretty stout. My big block big procharger stuff I have Scott "PAR" do. Nelson is a good boosted sbc guys.
First video in a while where they didn't tell me to go to /Drive+ ....this makes me wonder why Toyota doesnt sell 2JZ crate motors. The prices on 2JZ GTE's is getting ridiculous as the engine has aged. If they started remanufacturing them they could make a profit and it would lower the price. I can't imagine there isn't a market for that.
+Pickle312 Because realistically to get a 2jz to do what LS's do would drive the cost of a crate motor to something ridiculous. Would be willing to pay 22k for a long block? A long block that's destined to grenade to begin with at that? 2jz's are awesomely capable but their issues start with their displacement and people's unrealistic expectations of what the motor is capable of.
LS is an amazing swap because you can fit them in almost anything. Like the Miata. It's one of those cars that you have to be up close to understand the actual size. It's crazy you can fir a 6.2l in that thing. You can barely fit a 5.0l Coyote.(Not knocking the Coyote. It's still one of my favorites)
Yes, but this is one case where it might be more swappable than the LS, which I believe is the reason that Gregory brought it up. There's a kit out there specifically designed to fit a Ford V8 in a Miata called Monster Miata. Perhaps things have changed with all of the LS mania in the last few years, but I don't think there's anything out there for the LS. You're on your own making mounting brackets and such. What's funny about it is that something like this could have happened: Ford and Mazda cooperated on several models from the 60s up until recently.
wow, 30 years building, racing and a shop owner, I wish WISH every guy I ever had walk in to the shop asking for a hotrod watches this.. Very elegant explanations... Trying to educate about "combinations" is like digging holes in sand to most guys..
@@RBZ06LT6 well i don't disagree but it was a thing for a while. then again, the LSx wasn't yet on the scene. Believe there was an outfit doing the swaps... called it the Monster Miata.
+spark972 Yeah, exactly what I thought! You will sometimes find V8's in junkyards where I live - they are almost always 1UZ-FE's from old Toyota's and Lexus's - which are good engines but hard to get big power out of, or possibly a shitty LT small block from a Holden Commodore.
Yep, and here they get ripped apart by the guys that work at the yard before we get to even see them. Also any solid transmissions, gone before they are in sight. 😞
That sucks for you guys. There are hordes of LS engines in the junkyard thanks to all the pickups and SUVs from Chevy, GMC and Cadillac. Almost all the truck blocks are iron. 4.8L and 5.3L are a dime a dozen. I find them all the time with all the accessories, harness, ECU, and trans for about $1200 with 100k miles. Usually can get another 100k before the trans gives out, but the motor keeps going.
+1975 First On Race Day Capri 3.0 Ghia I'm a die hard chevy guy(Or any brand Big Block :P) but the LS craze got to me, I would rather put an old school SBC or BBC in any ride over a LS at this point, can't beat the sound either. I love the LS though, they're amazing engines and superior to the SBC,... but... BIG BLOCK!
+1975 First On Race Day Capri 3.0 Ghia Don't hate the engine, hate fanboys.... I can't stand them either as they tend to lack technical knowledge just read brochure and boom they are experts.
+Tyler Smith The youtube comment system is so dumb that people are having conversations and I have no idea what they are talking about because all I can see is Supra1722 statement and he is responding to someone who I can not see........ Yes these are all solid engines
+saratov99 Since when? I love both motors and i own cars with both motors. The 2JZ really only runs into problems once its starts pushing like 600 wheel ftlbs of torque and there are plenty of guys running with 800whp on stock internals with no issues. both are literally Kings and Queens of motors....the 2jz being the queen of course.
all you guys are looking at my original post wrong. i never said the 2J was better, i was just saying they should do more videos like this one about other motors.
This guy is good! I want to put the LS7 in my new Jeep Rubicon sooo bad. This is like an addict watching people shoot up and he cannot partake! Damnit!
Why would you,... OMG, LS in a Rubicon? Do you want to make it slower? Look at the FCA crate motors, there's even enough room in the Rubicon for the V10.
The LS engines sound SO good. Almost every V8 sounds so good. Of all the engine configurations, the American style pushrod V8 engines have the most vicious sound at low RPM's, when idling, and when cruising around. They aren't the most high tech, but the sound is so satisfying.
I could listen to this guy talk all day. It's refreshing to hear a real pro after wading through all the oceans of content crapped out by snake oil peddlers, know-nothings, and weekend warriors like me.
GMdrivingMOPARguy the engines cost about the same where i live, but the ls needs a more electronics where are a sbc doesnt so that causes a price difference. however big blocks here are double the price of an ls, if you can find me a "running" big block for 350$ let me know haha
Thanks for the video. Like many guys, I have always dreamed of fabricating machines and building engines. Unfortunately, my military career did not afford the luxury of staying in one place long enough to get established. Watching your video gave me a lot of food for thought, and concepts to research as I tinker through my retirement. I think it would be an amazing experience to work under, and be mentored by you.
Here is my 2 cents as a Car enthusiast. I love JDM and I love American Muscle. I love the LSX engines. They make great engines. You got LS1's that last over 200k miles if taken care of and reliability and gas mileage is great on those big V8's. possibly up to 30mpg its also lightweight so it makes great swaps. I also grew up around the JDM scene. I cannot deny that an LSX engine will run with the best of the JDM engines but as I been around the car scene so so long you pick up a lot of things by stepping into different people's shoes. LSX is American, and Americans generally make cars to go straight. They run the quarter mile for the lowest time possible. As for the Japanese, they have mountains so their performance aren't meant to even go in a straight line. It's meant to corner and track. Looking from the JDM scene, they dont hate on American Muscle because of their engines. They prefer JDM because of their lightweight chassis. American Chassis is way too beefy and heavy around the track. That's a huge reason why jdm heads don't run slicks and track their cars. Majority of American cars cant even get a good time around the track until the late 2009's when Chevy upgraded their tech for their Camaro and Vette's which are American's top cars btw. But you have to look at it like this. The amount of power the Camaro ss makes (about 430hp) got killed by a Honda (civic type r) around the track (300hp) or even a WWgolf making 270hp. (You can check the nurburgring lap times by the bay) Even the Acura Nsx which is old technology under 300hp beat the SS around the track. Why? BECAUSE OF THE HEAVY CHASSIS. The power to weight ratio is also way off too compete on the track. IF these imports went against the SS in a quarter mile, they would get killed but as I said, For imports, they mainly care about the track.
Garrett Martel exactly! so you take the awesomeness of the LS architecture and give it the flexibility and tunability of direct injection. that's a big big win
i think you're missing the point. not everyone lives in USA. a lot of countries, especially in europe, have INSANE taxes for cars with high displacement engines. when annual tax for a 6 litre engine is national's average income over 6 moths, or when insurance or some random "eco" tax is more than you earn in a month, or registering the car would cost you more than the car itself, i think you would go for a smaller displacement too. i'm not saying LS engines or V8s in general are bad. they are great at making good torque and are very reliable, but they are not practical for everyone. not to mention they tent to be very thirsty. and when you earn a third or half an average american earns but fuel is 4 times more expensive, this becomes a problem too. "there's no replacement for displacement" some may say. but that's false. there is a replacement, it's called TECHNOLOGY. this is where dohc, turbo, complex electronics and admission systems come into place. they offer great power and better fuel economy in smaller engines. the tradeoff is that they cost a lot and the more complex the engines are, the less reliable they tend to be on the long run. but again, for most of us, there's no viable v8 alternative.
I may be a JDM main but that doesn't change the fact that I love all cars from any country, and honestly more people need to watch this video, I already liked the ls but this video was an eye opener. Props 💯
The more I listen to this guy, the more I realize I should have pursued a career with cars; engines specifically. I'm by no stretch of the imagination a mechanic or technician, but I have always loved and respected the work and quality, of all sorts, as to what really brings a car to life, and it was a pleasure listening to this man. Now... how do I go about fitting an LS inside a 1980 Chevrolet Citation?
I talk because i know my stuff first of all ive rebuilt an ls and built another plus a 700 hp 2jz will last as long as a stock ls if u treat them the same dont bother to reply hillbily
As a student of engine blueprinting and extracting horsepower from any engine these is a great overview, good reminders and tips. Would love to work on an LS engine!
+Ronald Colman from the movie "Super Troopers". Also I'm not 100% certain the song I listed is correct on second thought. It could be also be " Mr. Undercover" by Axel Wolph but even this song isn't identical. :(
Thank you for taking the time to make this video. A lot of good info, some people would charge for this depth of knowledge!! Building the LS in my '13 Silverado now, and its the first endeavor on this platform; I am considering building one for my first gen Firebird after. Lastly, I can contest in my limited experience on the LS block, Tuning will make a HUGE difference. After valve train work, my motor struggled to start. A couple weeks of tuning (PC Tuners), and I can lay rubber (just a bit) in second!!!
Because GM knows how to make a good SOLID simple motor look at the 4.3 the 350 and the LS series 4.8,5.3,6.0 they are everywhere in everything just like the 350 is
k diddy ohh yeah I have a Trans Am with the LS1 and I love it. I’m trying to grow my RUclips channel so if you want then you should watch my content and subscribe!
Always thought its weird how America has always been exceptionally good at making engines but the rest of the car is hit or miss. Like the Ford GT 40 is Euro Muscle.
+N13L6 You are correct if you are writing about volumetric efficiency. But not if you are writing about fuel efficiency. 6.2 L LS is a large displacement engine, but it is lighter, smaller and gets better mileage than its European counterparts. Generally more reliable and cheaper to maintain as well.
+Parag Mathur yes, low maintainance because of low HP, the parts wear out a lot slower! Im not sure about how EU big displacements fare, but I am sure the USA has a lot more knowledge in that area :-)
+N13L6 I've been a Benz tech for the past 10 yrs and I can say they are no more reliable than any other car out there but you pay 3 time more than just about any other car out there. Zl1 makes about 556 hp that's not low horse power so I don't know what your looking for.
the LS is a great engine as proved in this video, but i really think mopar and ford should come out with their own engine with the requirements: must be redially available, cheap, and a very strong reliable platform. That in short is basicly a LS but i really would like to see mopar and ford have their own versions, because i really would like to see the other companies get some praise, instead of everybody just reconising chevy. Also im tired of seeing LS engines in Chryslers, Plymouths, Dodges, Fords, Jeeps, and everything else, because i really like to see a car with the same engine in it, because when they have another engine in the car, it kinda ruins it for me. Does anyone feel the same way or am I the only one?
One thing i learned from 45 years in the states (U.S.A.), those that espcialize in certain projects , jobs, hobbies end up like gurus, or a religion, this is the reason there are so many crafts and wonderful results from this type of freedom where you have all these things to perfect your craft whatever you choose, God Bless America.

The LS, 2JZ-GTE, RB26, and 1.3 liter twin turbo 13B rotary engines are all great and legendary engines that are great to work with. They all love making big and decent amount of power. Great presentation Nelson!
Rb26 are not that great stock lol. And rotary are unreliable time bombs

Love my 98 six speed Corvette. Got a good deal on it in 2017 and it already had a couple of external mods to boost up the HP a bit. The performance of that LS motor for what I paid for the car is so worth it...
I don't know shit about cars, yet watching this guy explain all this stuff was oddly satisfying.

+Knights2theEnd omg, I'm so in agreement.
leloodallasmultipass it's such a disappointment :/
+Knights2theEnd
There is no particular way of doing it. Some people don't even bother "breaking in" engines and just go all out from the start and haven't suffered any issues. So there is no evidence for it, although I would feel a lot more comfortable taking it easy on a new engine for a few hundred miles.
This Is Such a Mello' Cadenced' Matter of Fact' Smooth and Almost Therapeutic Interview! 😶 👍🇺🇸
Great video. I have an LS2 in a CTS-V and, though it's performing perfectly, the desire to get another 100HP out of it is always there...
Updates?
The best part about an LS Swap is the hurt feeling when I lift the hood of my old Ford.
I get it! I am hesitant to replace the 50+ year old block in my Firebird. A friend once told me, "Its your car, do what ever the F&$% you want!" Don't ever build a car (or anything for that matter) to impress someone, you will always be chasing someone else's dream....
If it helps any, the overall architecture is way more similar to a FORD, it is Chevy way of imitation.
Nelson is an legend if it comes to his engines...dude knows his shit.
I also remember the commercials they did where they put the wine glasses on an LS hood and revved it up....wonderful stuff back then.
I think you are referring to the original lexus ls 400 commercial..not GM ls motors
3:57 That's Harry Bridges Ave. The recent work has made the part by the 110 freeway look really nice but as it turns into Alameda another half mile ahead of where they're shooting, it's the old Wilmington we all know and "love." If your aren't familiar with what a brilliant man sounds like when he's found his true path in life, watch this.
Agree 2jzgte are at different level for being manufactured in the 90's
+Pickle312 japan has a diffrent way of seeing there cars. what is out now can only be topped by next years model, they are to progressive to look back
+BigzeeeN Last iron block 2jz... Also new dodge hellcats v8 supercharger use iron block but thats the only one that use iron these days
+Pickle312 there isn't a market big enough for it, especially with the price of the v160.
+Pickle312
Because realistically to get a 2jz to do what LS's do would drive the cost of a crate motor to something ridiculous.
The coyote is awesome but I don't see it ever being as swappable
Yes, but this is one case where it might be more swappable than the LS, which I believe is the reason that Gregory brought it up.
There's a kit out there specifically designed to fit a Ford V8 in a Miata called Monster Miata. Perhaps things have changed with all of the LS mania in the last few years, but I don't think there's anything out there for the LS. You're on your own making mounting brackets and such. What's funny about it is that something like this could have happened: Ford and Mazda cooperated on several models from the 60s up until recently.
TBustah Flyin Miata has a miata with an LS3 swap on the new ND Miata. Theyre looking to release a kit soon. Worth checking out
B/c the Coyote is 6,000-35,000$.

The 5.0 had a decent run back in the 90s. But then they went the modular OHC route vs GMs LS and lost any headway.
People were swapping 5.0s into Miatas for a while.
zaknefain100 lol not many. Who would do such a thing. Its heavy and it could barely fit in the engine bay. The LS is so small and light.
@@RBZ06LT6 well i don't disagree but it was a thing for a while. then again, the LSx wasn't yet on the scene. Believe there was an outfit doing the swaps... called it the Monster Miata.
Lots of nice input in this video, unfortunately this doesn't apply to other countries.
V8 in junkyard ? Not even in dreams...
+spark972 Same here.
And when there's one it gets ripped apart in 12 hours.
It's not so bad, 2jz, rb25 and Barra 270t are all easy to get here.

Why would you,... OMG, LS in a Rubicon? Do you want to make it slower?
Look at the FCA crate motors, there's even enough room in the Rubicon for the V10.
PiDsPagePrototypes I don't care about speed. I want raw power and reliability. THe LS has both is spades!

The one US thing I wish we had more of in the UK...
Don’t forget about guns.
The LS engines sound SO good. Almost every V8 sounds so good. Of all the engine configurations, the American style pushrod V8 engines have the most vicious sound at low RPM's, when idling, and when cruising around. They aren't the most high tech, but the sound is so satisfying.

+86gtforme For the price of a used 350. LS maybe cheap compared to imports but they are still very expensive compared to small and big block Chevy's
GMdrivingMOPARguy the engines cost about the same where i live, but the ls needs a more electronics where are a sbc doesnt so that causes a price difference. however big blocks here are double the price of an ls, if you can find me a "running" big block for 350$ let me know haha
+Liemciemdk89 this is why ls prices are rising**

300 hours per engine, at 100 bucks an hour that's a 30k a motor
and thats just labor...
if you want a twin turbo engine from this guy you need to spend at least 30k. Some of his engines are 60k or more.
Check out Nelson Racing Engines, they are great also

Thanks for the video. Like many guys, I have always dreamed of fabricating machines and building engines. Unfortunately, my military career did not afford the luxury of staying in one place long enough to get established. Watching your video gave me a lot of food for thought, and concepts to research as I tinker through my retirement. I think it would be an amazing experience to work under, and be mentored by you.
I have so much more respect for Nelson than Hennessy.
The new vette has set a new record this year what is your information based on haha
Obviously never heard of the acr viper, which destroyed almost every Japanese car around the nurburgring
Ford GT40.
WRONG!!!!
LS is, all things considered, probably the best engine ever. A lot of people go on about overhead cam etc but they're really missing the point.
Simon Coles new LT motor. move over LS
the LT is essentially an LS with direct injection built from the same base
Garrett Martel exactly! so you take the awesomeness of the LS architecture and give it the flexibility and tunability of direct injection. that's a big big win
Miami and Barra Turbo > Loser Shit
i think you're missing the point. not everyone lives in USA. a lot of countries, especially in europe, have INSANE taxes for cars with high displacement engines. when annual tax for a 6 litre engine is national's average income over 6 moths, or when insurance or some random "eco" tax is more than you earn in a month, or registering the car would cost you more than the car itself, i think you would go for a smaller displacement too.
i'm not saying LS engines or V8s in general are bad. they are great at making good torque and are very reliable, but they are not practical for everyone. not to mention they tent to be very thirsty. and when you earn a third or half an average american earns but fuel is 4 times more expensive, this becomes a problem too.
Props 💯
Pls what is the soundtrack you guys used for this video???????????????????????????????????

Always thought its weird how America has always been exceptionally good at making engines but the rest of the car is hit or miss. Like the Ford GT 40 is Euro Muscle.
+likenem like in what way are the good? I think they are kings of inefficiency, big ci, low hp...
The tremendous problem of LS engines is they are just monster to consume fuel is just.... Too much.
Could listen to tom talk about motors all day every day!
gm always kills the other 2 with cylinder head design. amazing
I think you meant to say Lotus engineering for the LT5 and Warren Johnson for the LS.
Damn my shaft just got wet with that music 🎶😂
the LS is a great engine as proved in this video, but i really think mopar and ford should come out with their own engine with the requirements: must be redially available, cheap, and a very strong reliable platform.
+Jake Morris amen to that
***** yeah i guess youre right, i mean i dont know why they ever switched to DOHC because the old engines were much better in every way, except mpg.
Jeremy Hall What? No its not its GM's design not a knock off of a ford
One can find a 5.7 hemi pretty easily I'd imagine... Chrysler put them in everything
Ford has the Barra
