  • Here's a design I came up with over the summer, but just got around to making a video on now. It's a custom ratchet design that is mounted to a 60-tooth gear (either High Strength or normal). This design has a number of uses, but I'll leave the applications up to you guys.

Not suitable for more precise mechanism, but this is a really neat simple durable ratchet. Nice

Love the tutorial! Can you do a tutorial on the elevator lift?

Nice, thank you! This will highly affect your rpm and add friction though, right?

It really should depend on how you use it. If it's used like how I'm using it in the video, then it will add friction, but that's kind of the point. If you modify it slightly for something like a flywheel, most of the increased friction will be seen on the deceleration, which is kind of what you want with a flywheel ratchet: a freespinning wheel that isn't transmitting power back to the motor.

We have to build tower takeover bots with 6 v5 classroom super kits and nothing else. Wish us luck!

How would you be able to incorporate this into a bot. I am at the intermediate level of building but I don't see how I could use this. I see how it could be great to use I just don't know-how.

It's not an every-bot type of mechanism, but it can come in handy when you need it. A lot of people in Turning Point used ratchets on their flywheels to prevent the inertia from backdriving the motors. It may come in handy for something akin to that in the future.
