The show really doesn't like addressing that fact, but, honestly, yes-the entire point of Hürrem's elevation was to place her in the role of female family elder after Hafsa's death. It was a move as much political as it was personal.

@@princess7jasmine thanks. The concept of concubines working flew over my head. In India even the lowest concubines were not allowed to work,except cooking for the kids or king, so I didn't consider this possibility.

Hürrem deserved all of that. So don't pity her. But in the real life (not series) Valide Sultan had a good relationship with Hürrem.

She’s not a slave. She was freed and is now the wife of a king. She’s a queen and mother of princes. This puts her above everyone but Suleiman.
