A beginning strategy is to confer with your boss and immediate colleagues on issues that enhance individual and group workspaces. Factors to consider are lighting, acoustics and air quality; desk and storage/filing space; ergonomics and access; privacy and personalization. Creating a comfortable environment can enhance your productivity and possibly reduce strain and stress of working in a confined yet open space.

Bill Lumbergh Hey Bill, do you have any idea how much shit you would be in with the Feds and the State Department Of Labor because of the way Milton was being treated? Laying him off and not telling him, not paying him, making him take care of the roach problem when that is not his job and also trying to make him do it without proper Personal Protective Equipment/PPE. The Feds would rip you a new one for all of that and you would be lucky if you didn't end up becoming Bubba's wife in prison and not paying Milton is considered wage theft while making him take care of the roaches without proper PPE is a blatant OSHA violation.

The fact that lumburg knew Milton was fired and kept giving him tasks with hopes he would just quit instead of anyone having to tell him he no longer worked there just gets me every time.

I had a cubicle job when my awesome wife took me to see this. As the camera pulled out on Milton's silhouette, I doubt I was alone in feeling rage. GOD, I love this movie.

Like I said before, Office Space was not a movie, it was a documentary. I remember working with a bank branch manager that was the basis for Lumbergh; talked slow, did nothing, coffee cup glued to his hand 24/7 and only came out of his office to check a few cabinet drawers to see if they were locked or remind people of the obvious. Yyyeah. ☕
I always loved the interview question, "How long do you plan to work with us?"

I used to work in a small county and made friends with a govt worker. He too, was an outsider like me. He was very outspoken and would not hesitate to call out his co-workers (all locals) on their b.s. So, they eventually moved his office to a tiny upstairs attic. He once told me that even though his co-workers were unable to fire him due to him being a govt employee.....in a way, they had still "won" because now he was kept tucked away in a little corner. So depressing.

It was an honor to sit through a Question and Answers with him and Gary Cole aka Lumberg.
Stephen Root is a fantastic actor. Not only has he done a lot of comedy, he has played in some serious roles as well (he makes a very good J. Edgar Hoover in Cranston's LBJ movie, among others roles).

I've always loved that. "We're gonna need to go ahead and move you downstairs into Storage B...". One of the best payoffs for his story arc is the end of the movie where the office burns down and you see him walking away.

I retired 3 years ago at the top of my game when I saw the end coming for a certain division of a global business. The place is still there, but the rework level has skyrocketed, maintenance is a year behind and the budget has been slashed. I ran into my former boss six months ago at a funeral. He asked if I could come back. I told him "I want 10% above my last pay, no mandatory meetings and I'd only work 20 hours a week." His jaw dropped. "Are you serious?" he asked. "Serious as a heart attack, you know I'm worth it." Well, I'm still retired. But it was fun being in a position to make the demand.
This is one method used by an employer to get an employee to quit. Office noobs beware. If this happens to you - get on your Peter Gibbons attitude and maybe not a full on Milton rage.
This is exactly what's going on with a co-worker at my new job. Almost like a domino effect once it starts.
It's even worse than that. They stopped paying him but they won't even tell him they're just giving him the run around. Basically he's just volunteering his time as they treat him like crap.
Not a good idea: Peter Gibbons ends up working for somebody else, while Milton ends up relaxing on a tropical beach. See? Rage is good!
That's a horrible strategy; and in the long run, the employer ends up shooting themselves in the foot especially if the employee is talented. Do it too much and you'll end up with a bad reputation; no one will want to work for you; and you end up either selling the place or going out of business all together. So, office bosses ask yourself: Is This GOOD for the COMPANY? The answer is a resounding NO!

He wasn't getting paid though, they just stopped paying him to avoid confrontation and hoping he would leave on his own.
I did here of a "lowly" worker drone who was moved to the basement due to an increase of employees & decided to quit, just walked out without telling anyone & was still paid for about a year until a HR audit was down. 😂

I have been moved 2 times and now we have someone else coming in and I was not sure if I would be moved again. I sent my COO this clip and asked him if I was being moved. Speaking of horrible management one time I unintentionally did something I wasn't aware that I wasn't supposed to be doing, after getting berated by my manager as a punishment I had to scrape gum off of the sidewalks in front of the store, I didn't realize how horrible it was having to go through that after a minor incident until I started working for a much better company.

The beauty of living frugal ans having tons of cash behind you. Like me. You can quit any time. I just did and I thought I might be out of work for a month. Got another job lined up and literally have ONE Monday off before the new job starts.
Stephen Root is a versatile and underrated actor. He was hilarious in 'Newsradio' and dramatically brilliant in 'Barry'.

Although, I already remembered Milton Waddams the squarely looking guy who mumbles alot and mutters to himself, and he was not happy about the change of doing his office work down the basement, and also experiencing anxiety, feeling nervous and scared and coping loneliness.
What's crazy is that boss isn't even an exaggerated version of what a lot of people are like in those positions. It's like they aren't really leaders, but they try to get into character.
When i stepped down from my lead position, a boss asked if i ever actually did any leading while i was lead. After all I'd been through, that question deserved a punch in the mouth, but i smiled instead. I told him, he'd have to ask the people, because all i knew was i did my best.

I legitimately felt so bad for Milton after he was moved down into the basement, like they're just leaving him there to die.

I was being squeezed out, though on a timeline that I wasn’t fully aware of. I had been replaced in my position already as given a sole project to work on. I was first shifted to a windowless office. A month later I was told (not asked) to move to another building on campus. The kicker - this move displaced a retiree that was working part-time for engineering. And no one told this older guy I was moving in to his space and that he would have to move. I had to let him know myself. I was so ashamed. And I could see the tears in his eyes.
Sigh. I think you always "know" when it is happening but don't "want" to know. I could tell when a.) The people I supported kept dwindling and no one replaced them; b.) I offered to take up new work in the litigation area (always busy) and got no response ... I had even taken a Civil Litigation survey course and got a perfect exam score. No response. The headquareters were skimming off a group of us (I assume they drew a horizontal line at a certain salary rate and as soon as there was a good excuse (for the over 40's) for an "economic" Covid layoff, we were let go. They now have incredible turnover since the people they get cheap can't provide the workload of the 6-8 difficult lawyers with large caseloads and leave or are fired. I am on my THIRD TIME applying to the jobs from out of nowhere just to amuse myself as I am busy with other things. I never hear back for an interview or when position filled.

I saw this movie in the theater on a Saturday night with my wife and on Monday was downsized from my engineering job. It was surreal.
Urrcreavesh You can definitely see it in the way he reaches for things in different scenes. In a way it works for his character because it makes Milton seem more awkward and squirrely.
I like how the Lumbergh always uses "go ahead and move, go ahead and get yourself", subtle subversion techniques where he is already assigning the task as a duty to the employee even before he can reason with it. That way when he even starts to reason with it, he has already made a connection to the task emotionally and now he feels guilty not doing it.
I want lumbergs job, walk around with a superiority complex, casually sipping coffee, and barking orders to the lesser people.

cameraman655 you know what’s crazy about this film is that Stephen Root and Gary Cole aka (Bill Lumberg) became really good friends after this film and they do a tour where they sit and the audience gets to ask them questions about the movie. Both of these guys are extremely funny in real life and they joke with the audience as well. They never thought that this movie was gonna be that big of a success. Stephen said that he actually worked in an office of this environment before and Gary Cole was a bartender before making it big as an actor and he had endless stories of how people are really stupid. Lol 😂 I was laughing the whole time and said wow this is crazy

As bad as it might seem to be in the basement storage room, Milton would have the best computer connection compared to the other staff. In most companies, the wiring for electricity runs underground to prevent power outages. This also applies to the WiFi connection.

The actor Steven Root who plays Milton has a part in the new film 'Get Out'. Its a good movie. I thought I had recognized him from a comedy. I had to look him up.
