Is Harley's 2025 Lineup PRICING OUT the Average Rider?

  • In this video I am asking the question. Why are the prices so high and is Harley Davidson trying to bring up their used bike sales? This happened years ago when their bikes were hard to get. I personally think there is a second agenda here.

I just ordered a 2025 Street Glide Ultra. By the time I got done with everthing I wanted to upgrade, it's 40k. It's my last new bike so I got exactly what I wanted. Toys are expensive. I figure to have 3-5 years left riding distances of any kind so it should get me there. Then I'll give it to one of my boys.

You might be onto something ! Speaking of Royal Enfield, I was at a Royal Enfield dealer here this week and the parts guy was telling me that they have a number of ex Harley people in higher up positions with Royal Enfield now. I’ll never buy a new Harley, I don’t like the look of them now and they’re too expensive for me to justify having one. I’m buying a 07 Ultra Classic . I like the older bikes more.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but back in the day, the typical nostalgic blue collar biker was not walking into a HD dealer and riding away on a new bike. Just look at the rally pictures of bikers in the 1980’s. Those are well used bikes, customized and cobbled together on a budget. You and I are about the same age, and back in the 80’s, everyone I hung out with rode a bike, and not a single one of them had a NEW Harley.

Exactly! Harley's have always been expensive motorcycles. The average worker bought used Harley's. Or, before the housing bubble of 2008, they refinanced their house and bought a new Harley with that extra money and they paid more for them than todays Harley's when accounting for inflation.

The Harley craze started with military surplus (WWII) this is why they were customized as the bikes were dirt cheap and military green. So, guys pulled the tanks and fenders cut them and painted them. Anything that changed the military issue look was desired. The Harley stuff you see today started in the late 80s. In the early 80s Harley was AMF, to changing away from AMF. I'm old enough to have seen first hand brand new AMF Harleys. Us metric rice burners rode that guy b(censored) so he could go with us.

I can remember the mid-1990s when you paid $25 to put your name on a list with the bike and color you wanted and the dealership would call you if it came in. When you got the call, the bike or color that came in wasn't what you wrote down. On the other hand, buying used from an individual wasn't cheaper. This was all before H-D ramp up in production, accessories, apparel, and brand name protection. I'm pretty sure they are not choosing to go back to that earlier business model. Not after all the investment. They need to keep up with inflation like everybody else. Simple as that.

He went on a ride with us about 150 miles one way on a round trip and then his Indian threw a code on his start/stop switch and as a result, the computer wouldn’t let him start the bike without a dealer reset.

Like most of the corporations today, Harley Davidson bows at the altar of high profit margin, which is Jochen Zeitz’ Hardwire initiative. Sell fewer bikes, but sell the higher price models. The price on paint is outrageous. They’re charging the price of a paint job for a car, on a motorcycle. If I were to buy a Harley, I’m looking at bikes that are at least 20 years old.

As I am coming up on 15K miles I went to the local dealer ( the dealership where I bought the bike actually shut down last year) and paid $29 for a black oil filter. This compares to $15 I paid at the same dealer last April. I love the bike but not so much the apparent business model. Time will tell if The Motor Company is on the right course.

I agree about the extra 3k for paint. They are beautiful but priced outta my league. Some will argue that HD would rather sell you a New Bike then a used. I disagree. I think that HD finance is a cash cow and as long as you walk out with something they are happy. Look at the Road Kind Special. They had done nothing new with that bike and the price just keeps climbing. It didn't even get the 117.

I'm 66 years old, and I've ridden Harleys since 1994. Harley-Davidsons have always been expensive, and I've bought most of mine gently used with low miles. If you really want a Harley, there are deals in the used market if you can be patient and look long enough. I bought my last new HD in 2021, a Sportster Iron 883. I wanted an Evo Sporty before they stopped making them. It sits in my garage next to my 2023 Triumph, which I also bought new. I can afford a new Harley, but I no longer see the value in them, and I'm not fond of the styling. The Motor Co.'s business plan is definitely changing, and it remains to be be seen how it all works out. I wish them the best.

@trudgyhd It's the whole rabbit hole. You buy a motorcycle that's supposed to be premium only to find out you have to upgrade a lot of parts to make it whole. It wouldn't be so bad if it was just preferences but the inferior engine parts is what got me. Then they say Harley's retain their value better than the rest which is a half-lie. If you're going by MSRP that's fine but all that goes out the window when you account for all the money you have to dump into the bike. Then there's the high cost of parts and the ridiculousness of prices with the new bikes along with the displacement wars and being bloated with tech. I'm ready to go back to my roots with a simple motorcycle under 1,000 CC that doesn't need a ton of money dumped into it to be whole.

    Self proclaimed resident millennial here-
I think we’re forgetting that HD makes money on used bikes IF we finance thru them instead of some other financial institution- that being said, I think the used bikes are the new “entry level “
And honestly- I’m not mad at it- think back 20 years, the big twins were like 96cu- now we have 117’s- technology on bikes was meh at best, but now we have ride modes, ABS, cylinder deactivation, and all the rest. Yes only a select few can get brand new, but look at the cost of brand new PLUS the maintenance- the 1k service, the 5k service-
Like u said, they make money on the loans- and with the glut of used bikes, it’s plenty of “affordable “ machines, they might just have miles on them- kinda like cars- most people who buy these bikes rarely hit 25k with them- hell I just saw a 2017 low rider s wit 11k miles and all done up with after market parts- for the grand total of $13.5k-
And with all you get, I’m not mad at that price-
I’m not sure if getting brand new is worth all the hype, but as a family man, I can accept that someone else ate the depreciation and I can get a solid machine that is gonna last- respectfully, I think in your early years everything was less expensive, that’s never been the case for my generation- oatmeal beats no meal & one far off day, maybe I’ll get brand new, but it won’t stop me from having fun-
Appreciate your content sir- keep it coming 💪🏿💪🏿

Old millennial here as well. Boomers won’t ever understand the income:expense ratio we’ve been smacked with since the first day we began working and it’s only gotten worse. Can’t hate them for it, they just never had to experience that level of continuous expense and inflation in their prime earning years as we have. Grocery shopping frugally, eating only meats, fruits, vegetables, rice and oatmeal costs my family of 6 $2400 a month just to eat at home. Ofailurecare came out and suddenly my healthcare cost more than my mortgage for 1/3 the coverage and a $3k deductible per person. Healthcare alone nearly bankrupted me and at the time I had zero vehicle payments.
That said, I joined the military young, served in combat, did 7 years. I used active duty tuition assistance to pay for my degree and then the GI bill to pay for my grad degree. I’m able to afford new bikes, but I’m still very careful with overall cost and terms if financing.

They can't see past the nose on their face. I personally k ow some of the engineers and I agree. I'm happy the 117 is the new standard but I don't see the value. When I see a bike at $30k I need to get really excited. I'm not and no one should be. Ride modes are nice but they aren't new technology. The road glove limited is so lame. Its like really? What% of buyers can pay cash for that, even with a decent trade-in? So they focus on the monthly payment, knowing that it sounds more affordable. With a little patience and bank backing, they will get you to pay twice the amount for an already overpriced vehicle. As for the overloaded with accessories SUVs and Touring Models in our world, when is the last time you saw a “stripped down” model on the showroom floor? I think a streetbob might be a decent buy for a younger rider, as it comes with most things you need and very little you don’t. I wouldn’t cheap out on overall looks, you might be staring at it for many years. But what’s wrong with that? Negotiate early, Maintain continuous, enjoy your ride for several years. And good luck!🤠

Not sure how the HD mothership benefits, profit wise, from sacrificing new sales to prop up the used market?
Unless ur saying there’s more money to be made off parts for service?
HD gets paid through dealer allocation when a bike comes off the line. If they wanted to make a boat ton on parts, they’d tank the quality… but then have huge warranty costs.

Easy. The CEO,Board of Directors and to a lesser extent the shareholders it's about Quarterly Earning, Buybacks and share price. You're correct about financing making more than the bikes either through direct interest, arbitrage or just selling the loan . They're trying to convince people with money it's a premium brand but it does not have the pedigree a premium brand commands. Can't even put a power windshield on the bigger bikes.... very premium indeed. I love HD but it is a brand in confusion and ultimately decline. absolutely increase in pricing sucks HOWEVER they aren't the only ones, and they are comparable to similar manufacturers. In some case cheaper than competitors. It's the same with everything Grocery's up 10% from last year, all my subscription services for tv are up 5-10% . Look at things like ground beef, up 30% the last 3 years! Why? the beef is the same ? Harley has always known of it's biggest competitors are itself with the used market in North America, and if someone wants an entry-level, more affordable bike, there is 1000's in the used market as well. I don't believe the current CEO is doing the right things though to attract new Riders and that will be the downfall over the years as their loyal customers die off. They need to be where the younger generation is and haven't figured that out with the current CEO yet.

Very good review HG. I am trying to determine who at Harley Davidson thought it was a good idea to hire a German CEO who formally was a CEO for Puma athletic shoes. Shoes and motorcycles have zero similarity and Zeitz and that equally liberal board of directors are completely out of touch with the Harley Culture, the Harley history, and the traditional Harley customer.. It was the blue collar individuals that made Harley what it was and as you mentioned they have completely outpriced these riders out of the market with these obscene prices. Zeitz is a millionaire climate change advocate, who wants to push this livewire disaster onto the market and its not going to fly. I am looking at purchasing a Breakout and they want 1300$ just for a badge and a paint job with some faded flames. The other colors have added prices also with the exception of the primer gray. They have pretty much reached the pricing threshhold of pain for a good percentage of buyers. It remains to be seen how high they can go before they get the message they cannot continue at this pricing pace and still compete. It remains to be seen but in my opinion they are pretty much there.

    Yes, you are wrong.
If Royal Enfield sells a million bikes worldwide by building them in India with labor at 20% of US labor costs and virtually no environmental restrictions, tell me how HD could even begin to compete in that market. Do you see Royal Enfield bikes all over the streets in the US, filling up the parking lots at bike nights? Of course not. Because there is no substantial market in he US for 350 to 650cc retro bikes. Besides RE, there is a glut of other manufacturers in that size/price market, and the profit margins on $6,000 bikes are tiny. HD makes WAY more profit selling T-shirts than it ever could selling beginner bikes in a crowded market where it could not even manage a 10% market share at best.
