Look at this I'd rather be with you, or I'd prefer to be with you. Are they both correct? And what about this? I prefer working in the evening, or I prefer to work in the evening. Do they both mean the same thing?
Let's find out.
OK, listen, we have four different grammar structures for would rather and six different grammar structures for prefer. So you're really going to need today's worksheet. It's free. You can download it by clicking up there or in the description and that comes with a summary of all the structures, the examples and a test to see if you've mastered this topic. Okay, so is there any difference between these two verbs would rather and prefer?
Well, before we answer that, let's first have a look at how we use each one. And we're going to start with would rather.
Now, I said that there are many different structures for using would rather. And the reason is that it depends if we're talking in the present or if we're talking in the past. Are we talking about present preferences or are we talking about past preferences and regrets? It also depends on whether we're using the same subject or if there are two different subjects. What I mean by this is, for example: I want to go. This has one subject - I. Or: I want you to go. This has two subjects - I and you.
So let's start by looking at how to use would rather to talk about present preferences with just one subject. Let's start with the easy one. And the structure for this is would rather plus the verb with would rather. Just pay attention because we often use the contraction instead of I would rather we normally say I'd, I'd rather. Instead of you would rather, you'd rather. And instead of he or she would rather we say he'd rather, she'd rather, we'd rather, they'd rather. So with that in mind, let's have a look at a couple of examples using would rather in the present with one subject. I'd rather work from home than in an office. I'd rather work from home. I'd rather work from home than in an office. I would rather or I'd rather visit Chicago than London for my holidays. I'd rather visit... easy!
Now, when the subject changes and there are two subjects in the sentence we need this structure: would rather, then the new subject, then the past simple. So it looks like this: you can cook if you want, but I would rather we went to a restaurant. I would rather we went - here the two subjects are I and we - I'd rather we went to a restaurant. I would rather they emailed me than sent me a letter. I'd rather they sent me an email. They sent is the past simple. So a tiny bit more complicated, right?
Okay, let's look at how to use it to talk about past preferences and regrets when we're using just one subject, and the structure for that is: would rather plus the perfect infinitive. Perfect infinitive... what is that? Well, basically, it's the word have and then the past participle - always have not has or will have. No, it's always have. So have spoken, have eaten, have danced.

Sorry if ot, but could you explain why there are some plural noun modifiers when the rule says they have to be used in the singular form?
Found examples: sports day, special needs child, kids farm.
Thanks!

You are a great communicator and you make simple structures which are actually complex. That's why I decided to subscribe. I'm also an English teacher in Setúbal, Portugal. Saudações de Portugal!

Beautifully explained, thank you
Hi Greg. I've been teaching my students how to use "prefer" and "would rather" in a rather simpler way -they just know how to use "prefer gerund to gerund", "prefer noun to noun" or "would rather bare inf. than bare inf." Then I realized I might have a difficult time myself if things get a bit more advanced. This was really helpful, thanks a lot.
Hi Greg,🤗! You are the best teacher in the world for me! Thank you for everything!!
thank you for the explanation, it’s helpful to me

Thank you, Greg. I'd rather, however, start from something simpler. As a Slow Learner I prefer to take off gradually. Stay healthy.

Oh, this was a really difficult one!
As a Norwegian, much of the English grammar is quite similar and comes rather naturally to me, but this was something different, which I don't think we see in our language!
I'm confused 🤪🤣
I'll be downloading the work sheet today, definitely!
THANK YOU Greg!! ❤❤

Thanks!
Thank you so much for your generosity, Brenno! I really appreciate it! 😊
Thanks
Wow. I really liked it. Clear, simple. Straight to the point! One remark though. I would rather we had.... As a matter of fact, had here expresses the past subjunctive which is formed with them past tense of the verb.
Great !
It's been a month since I've been watching your video .
I like your accent and style .. take love from Bangladesh 🇧🇩
This is a wonderful channel. Congratulations. Could you be so kind to go deeper and teach us how the structures would be if we want to use them with verbs in the negative form with one or two subjects? Thank you very much.
Really great 👍
EXCELENT. It Is so benefit, interesting .I love your videos .👋👋👌
So helpful to me
The best teacher ever
Amazing 😍 video!
Thanks a good way to refresh old things I studied long time. ago. Onlh thing you should have stressed that the 2nd subject in the last sentences it is actually in the form of an object.
Thank you very much sir ❤️
I'm Zubair Al mahmud from Bangladesh one of your long time watching views.
Hello Greg. Could you make a video about passive voice in the continious tenses? Does it exist?
What a rich lesson, with much to learn! It's so interesting to know all that. But before knowing definitively, It's necessary to remember all very accurately !
= to be rewatched !
I'd prefer to be able to remember once for all!

Super good
Hi Greg! Can u pls make a new lesson with: have been and has been. Thanks in advance.
Thank you for this video! The explanation is great!
I'm really curious about one thing and will be veeery grateful if you could help🙏
For preferences for the actions of another person in Present we can use this structure 'I would prefer it if you cooked for me'.
Is this structure possible for the same situations but in the Past? Something like this 'They would have preferred it if we had cooked for them'
???
You explain the grammar so lucidly.I have a question that's been on my mind since long.Kindly explain the difference in these sentences
1.I would have loved to go there.
2.I would have loved to have gone there.
3.I had to have gone there.
4.I have to have gone there.(incorrect sentence,I think)
Kindly take this question right away.
This video was really helpful but I would prefer to watch more comparations between rather and prefer.
is there any structure for the future preferences?
Great instructions on the English language niceties…
Would you mind reaching us how to use "if only" by constructing a sentence? Thanks
Sir plz make a video on can , could , would because it is too confusing although I know lots of uses of these but still there are some uses which I find so difficult to understand for example, i could say what does this mean
oh my goodness, what a lovely video, I almost got it :-)
Somebody said me "could you pay for english course" if you want to learn more, but I would prefer watching Mr Greg videos 😉 thank you
Very useful to me this topic thanks Greg, am from India. Actually we use after than V1. I would rather they emailed than send a letter, in this it should be after "than send" but u put than sent. Please once check, thank you
Please may vs might
I would prefer it if I did my Law exam in June than in August.
Do would rather and prefer same meaning? Can I use both of them with same meaning? And when do I use "than" and "to" which follow "would rather and prefer"?
Please can you help, I have a question which is : with " would rather + subject + past tense " if I use "than" , should the verb after "than" be in the past simple too?? Which one is correct : I'd rather you took a taxi than wait or waited for a bus ???
Great explanation from you teacher👍, if you allow me to clarify one thing : the structure of Perfect infinitif (have or has + past participle) we also call it Present Perfect. The structure of Past Perfect ( had + past participle).i need your opinion in what i wrote thanks to answer
As he said, the structure mentioned was "have + past participle", and that is called perfect infinitive. It's always with "have", in its infinitive form. You are talking about "have/has + past participle", that would be present perfect, but in the video example it doesn't apply.
Hi , Greg .
I,m new student when i,m not a student but everyday one can learn a new lesson in various aspects of life.
My question is: Do native_ speaking English know these grammers? Do they practice them correctly ?
I mean in written English it will be of course important BUT, if one doesn,t speak" it correctly , will people make fun of him/her or it,s just o.k? 😀🌹
The most complicate is using correctly the infinitive and the present participle with the correct prepositions.
Absolutely great, but what about if i say, you can accompany me but i would rather you stayed at home. Is it correct as the second subject is singular!
I'd rather you as my teacher you are the best one
Respected sir, Could you please enlighten me a bit about whether the sentence "The judge ordered the spy to be shot"is Grammatically correct. You are earnestly entreated to give a class on"passive voice with double infinitive"
Quick question, please. Would it be possible to say: I'd rather work from home than working from the office? as an alternative to "I’d rather work from home than in an office."?
Greg, thanks for this lesson, but pdf from email won't open
Hi and Ty from Chicago 😅
According to Carol King's Born To Follow: Oh I'd rather go and journey"
Hai, would you like to teach me about the use of : insist on , please
