Longevity: I was gifted a lovely set of 36 Cotman pan paints waaaaaaaaaaaay back in 1989 upon my graduation. I have used them sparingly until recently (when I began painting more with watercolor), and I have to say, they have held up well all these years.
Hey, great video. I suppose it should be mentioned that a few accomplished professional watercolor artists use Cotman water colors. I personally prefer DaVinci at this time, but I will use some of the Cotman as well. I find that some of the Cotman earth tones, for example, work well along side my professional watercolors. Having said that, Cotman colors, or student grade colors in general, will mix different pigments to approximate the more expensive cobalts and cadmiums; these are indicated by the word "hue" on the tube ( eg. "cobalt blue hue"). Cotman's cobalt blue is actually ultramarine blue pigment (PB29) mixed with a white pigment (PW5). This is indicated on the back of the tube. If you want a true cobalt pigment (PB28) you will have to go professional. I would think that the type of painting one does makes a difference. For example, I would want the most saturated pigments for florals, but could mix and match for more subdued earthy landscapes. In the end it's all personal preference and what one can afford. The important thing is that the finished painting is what was desired in the first place. If you understand color theory, tone and value, counterbalance and contrast, along with good composition, your paintings will look good no matter what you decide to use. I'll stop now. Thanks again for the great vid.
I use the cotman pan set and love them, especially as the paints are together in a set and easy to pick up and take anywhere in a moment, but also get a little frustrated with them when it comes to the mixing part! I have wanted to invest in some tubes now for a while and this has made my mind up to go and get some. Thank you this video has been a great help!
People are talking about 12 pan sets being $100+ in their country and I paid $11 online for the 12 pan cotman sketchers pocket box! Its crazy messed up how high export costs can be. I've had it for a little bit now and I havent put a dent in it. Although I do enjoy the pans, I also removed the colors from the set that I can mix myself and I've replaced them with my favorite tube paint colors, especially Naples Yellow as it has been a godsent for mixing consistent skin tones easily and using less paint.
The $100 windsor and newton pocket box is their professional line. The cotman is their student line of paints. Cotman products by windsor and newton is all student quality. Tbh the cotmans suck
i love that cotman set, i just wish there was a paynes gray instead of that white thing. i also don't like how if im not careful opening the set then half pans pop out EVERYWHERE
I love how many informative videos you do. I'm just trying to get into water color n your videos are really helpful. For whatever reason there aren't any water color painting classes near me. You have become my go to!
I started out with the WN Cotman #24 pan set ($21). Compared to other student grade sets, I believe these are a better quality, imo.. I then bought empty 1/2 pans and fill them with WN professional tube paints in colors I enjoy using in my paintings. The pan set I use has empty slots for extra 1/2 pans. Some colors of tube paints I've ordered are Indigo, Quin Gold, Cobalt Turquoise and Sepia, to name a few. The Winsor & Newton Cotman pan sets are a good place to begin, if you're new to watercolors.
I love the Windsor Newton professional half pans. I got a kit. Then I migrated to a slightly larger tin and used reusable double sided tape to stick them in. Got rid of the black replaced it with indigo. And also added cobalt turquoise light, permanent rose replaced alizarin Crimson. It's super portable and compact.
I just got the 45+3 WN Cotman pan set and I love it. The colors are gorgeous. They wake up quick and are very easy to use. I plan to try the Sennelier pan set and other brands to create my own palette in the future but WN is what I need right now. I don’t think I will be happy with tubes. I will switch the WN Cotman half pan for the professional ones over time. Thank you for another great video🌸
I love the pan paints for traveling. They're compact. I have unly used van Gogh and Rembrandt pans from Royal Talens though. I fill my pans with tube paints when they're used up. when I am painting at home though, I love to use my tube paints in the bigger palette. 😁
I just found you a few days ago! My goal this year is to get back to painting and Iv been using your videos and the book every day water color to help me along. Thank you for sharing all your knowledge I’m truly inspired! And Iv got say, you have the cutest home/studio!!! Keep up the good work! Thank you!
I have the full set of the cotman pans (was a bargain!). But personally I really have to work hard to get the color out of the pans! And i find the browns very weak in color.
Thank you for this vid. I have started my W&N watercolor tube collection ( only a few ) and have decided to add more to it. I'm going to stick with W&N but I was told I should get some Daniel Smith tubes as well. Have you used any of those? Thoughts? Thanks Jess
1997superchickk Daniel Smith are great quality, super high pigment volume. Vibrant and lightfast, totally worth it. I only use DS and Schmincke personally, I highly recommend both.
Great info...I can see you really know your stuff, thanks. I appreciate you have concentrated on watercolor and what it does, it's so easy to get sidetracked with all the other media and waste time.
Hahah, my mom only ever used sennelier or w&n artist paints, but I brought my modified cotman set to her house and she actually liked them. But she likes lighter colors in her paintings anyway.
I tend to use both, Cotman and W&N artist grade, only because I can pick up a tube of Cotman in my high street when desperate. Out of choice I would always go for the artist grade as it is much nicer to use and goes such a long way. Although it seems a lot more expensive, I doubt there would be much in it when you consider how little you need to use. To put it in context, I've had a pea size blob of 'artist' cad yellow dried on my pallet, that I have been using for months, The same size blob of Cotman I can use up in one session. I also find the consistency of the Cotman tubes slightly 'gelatinous', it does not disperse as freely as the artist grade. As you demonstrated in the video, you only need to touch it with a wet brush and you have a rich puddle of colour.
I love your videos.... idk how this is the first time seeing your video I’m a RUclips watercolor junkie. Anyway you are the first pro artist who said she loves W&N paints .. I love them too although because of Denise ( in liquid color) I have 14 tubes Daniel Smith paints.I also love the rich transparency of DS.THANK YOU !
I have 4 brands of color : holbein, W&N, schminke (sorry for spellings) and Lukas. Lukas and holbein don't change much when they dry. W n N changes most when dried. Holbein would be my favorite of them.
your workplace is my goal! btw i was wondering is your pan set made in france or china? cuz i just bought a set thats made in china and im not sure if the quality changes
My first watercolour set was that little Winsor Newton Cotman pan set which I really disliked for how hard it was to get colors up. I have discovered some softer more vibrant brands like Schmincke, White Nights and Mission Gold which are really great for those who like the creaminess of tubes in pan form.
This is a very informative video, thank you Carrie. I have only started to work in watercolours recently. I am trying to understand colours (mixing, creating new palette for a subject...) But I am often put off when not able to create the colour I see in my mind. It often gets close but then becomes opaque or chalky. If you could give a way out to exploring and creating new colours it would be great! I have PAN sets of sennelier, Cotman field sketchbox, Sakura koi. Also do watercolour concentrates mix well with PAN and tube colours?
+Jenny Hoang hello Jenny, my favourite are tubes actually. But of the three I certainly prefer sennelier for they by far more vibrant even after drying.
Hi Carrie -- Great video! My first watercolor set was a pan set of Crayola watercolors. :-) I then bought the W-N Cotman set and was frustrated with them because I couldn't get them to be transparent. This was before I knew there were paints that were opaque and some were transparent. I now have M. Graham paints and I love, love, love them! Have you tried them? Thanks for sharing all your knowledge with us!!
I know this is old but hopefully you'll see this and be able to give me a suggestion. I'm about to buy my first watercolor pallet that's student grade (I have a really cheap palette right now and I hate it. It drys down super chalky). I'm looking at the mission gold 24 tube set or the cotman set. It doesnt matter if its pan or tube. What would you go for? I like bright fun colors
Just found your channel. Really useful video. I've just purchased my first W&N Prof tubes having spent the last 3 months using a childrens set of paints which was my first buy 😬😂 and my 2nd purchase of a cheap adult version. I actually feel I'm having to start all over again as there feels like there is such a huge leap from my first paints sets to using these tubes. But wow!! The colours are so vibrant and the layering seems to happen without trying. I look forward to finding my confidence with them but definitely feel I'm back at the beginning again 😳🙄 I'm now seeing why I was struggling to get the results I wanted when following a RUclips tutorial. Now off to look through your other videos. Thank you 😊
Have you tried M. Graham watercolor paints? I've found them to be richly pigmented and easily re-wetted. I'm curious what you'd think of them! I've tried both Cotman and artist-grade W&N paints and your observations are spot-on. Thank you for sharing!
I've never even heard of M Graham watercolors. I only use PH Martins and Winsor and Newton since those are locally available to me. I've never ventured into other realms but would love too maybe one day :)
I use cotman but I would love to try the winsor and newton artists quality, :( its just too expensive for me! Maybe one day, I'm pretty happy with mijello mission gold though! Have you tried them?
Good video. There are times, sketching, plein aire when pan sets are really convenient. I use Lukas full pans, and I have some of the really extra large WN pans, with wooden holder, which Winsor Newton has discontinued. WN, of course makes excellent artists grade pans, but I do like Lukas.
I noticed that you used Ultramarine Blue for your test. I had several brands of Ultramarine that I swatched out - W&N, Cotman's and Daniel Smith. I found that for Ultramarine, there was virtually no difference. However, I did notice a great deal of differences in, for example, Burnt Sienna and many of the different types of Alizarin Crimson or Quinacridone Rose (I didn't have duplicates for all of the reds, but in a couple of cases, I had the same color - supposedly.) You mentioned that you liked the way the artist grade re-wets. You might want to try M.Graham or Senelier paints as they are made with honey and re-wet very easily. Once upon a time, it was necessary to use hot water to get watercolors wet enough to use. Then W&N improved the paint and Senelier started to add honey to their paints so that re-wetting was easier. Voila!
Hello there! It seems to me that the professional colour swatch you demonstrated towards the end was far superior in pigment load and saturation. Student grade paints are often filled with more filler than the professional lines. You really do get what you pay for 😁😁
When I watercolor , some spots are still blank, they aren't painted because somehow the paint didn't reach there . If I try to get them , the paint mixes with the other paint and some spots are darker . Should I fill these spots or not ?
Hi artfullymade4u, I have only painted a year, but I have tubes of several brands, including Sennelier, M. Graham, Winsor & Newton, and Daniel Smith. I have a couple of tubes of da Vinci, Schmincke, and Holbein as well. In my opinion, all these brands offer beautiful paints. Sennelier and M. Graham are made with honey. They stay moist in a palette and respond easily to a wet brush. They also have a luminous, glowy quality from the honey that is gorgeous (and are my favorites). Schmincke paints are less granulating and the colors seem flatter when dry, but that's a quality many painters prefer. I love granulating paint colors, which Daniel Smith does very well. All these brands have colors I would not be without. I adore Sennelier's Indian Yellow and Dioxazine Purple, M. Graham's Permanent Alizarin Crimson and Yellow Ochre, Daniel Smith's Undersea Green and Rose of Ultramarine, Winsor & Newton's Opera Rose and Cobalt Turquoise Light, Schmincke's Translucent Orange, and Holbein's Bright Violet. Finding your best loved paints is a process. Your individual style may be better served by one brand more than another, or a combo of several brands as I enjoy, but the only way to find out is to try a few tubes and see what makes you happiest to paint with. A lot of people worry about lightfastness, but even artist grade paints with lower lightfastness ratings are pretty darn good and will last a long time if you use them on high quality paper, frame them with UV protective glass, and hang them out of direct sun. I don't worry about it. I hope this helps. Happy painting!
Do you have a video where you explain why you keep your tubes hanging on the wall with the stopper down ? I always keep them standing the other way around.
Pablo Hernández Flores it could be so that the paint is easier to get out of the tube and you don't waste any paint that gets lost in the bottom. That's just what I think though!
Hello, I have a question! I love the Cotman Turquoise colour and I am running through that one the quickest. When I run out I would like to get an artist grade of Windsor and newton of this colour but there is no "Turquoise" colour. Which colour would be best in comparison within the Winsor and Newton Artist grade paints?
Hello 😊 thank you for your video ... If I may ask about the cotman tubes their light fastness, is it good ? I only have the cotman range where I live. Thanks a lot.
I've watched several of your videos this evening. I like your style of explaining things. Very clear, very simple. I have one question: What if you can't draw? I have no skill at drawing anything. I love the watercolor concept and techniques. But, if I can't create an image to work from by myself, it seems like I should be doing something else. Any suggestions? Thanks!
what about chinese cotman and chinese winsor and newton with not label in aliexpress? can you buyit and make una comparacion. sorry my english has over.
I tend to like the vibrancy of the paint directly from the tube. However, I do have a palette where I allow my paints to dry and use them for details and pastel colors. So, I use both dried and fresh paint :)
+Watercolor Misfit (Carrie K. Luc) I use pans only and I can't get pretty vibrant colors with them. (van gogh,w&n, St Petersbourg and schminke ). I mean you can achieve vibrancy with the dried form of watercolor ^^
You're so sweet! I love your videos! Will you do other watercolor brand reviews like Schminke? For people like me who are debating which brand to splurge on for my first high end palette? Will you also do a desk tour? Your stuff looks super Cool!!! Xx Much love Lauren
A tour is coming soon! I unfortunately won't be reviewing any other paints besides the one's I've already done bc I don't own any others :( Maybe one day in the future though :) Thanks for commenting :D
This is the kind of video I've been waiting for my whole life haha great video👍🏼 Btw, your desk area is so organized and clean.. Mine looks like a junk yard😭
Новичкам может показаться, что различий нет, но при работе с красками Cotman, заметил, что мои смеси с Burnt sienna и Ultramarine работают совсем не так как с профессиональными сериями.
It's good for beginners but I personally don't like them. I have the small sketchers box because it was recommended but I found out I prefered bigger mixing spaces and the pans were very hard to get pigment. I prefer white nights or for sketchbooks, prang.
Your workplace is literally my dream. I have the pan set and I think one of the biggest turn downs of the palette is the white.... I don't know how to use a pan white (?)
I actually just bought my first set of cotman tubes. It's a "primary" set with a green"ish" color plus burnt umber and ivory black. I got it hoping I could get all the colors I get in oil with the same palette... plus hoping I could mix a Payne gray... love to mix colors. Thank you for the video.
like painting watercolor this palette pan is crying is need you used the respect pallete used used n look new, good color......... what yo doing empty tube is put in the trash i am collect((( empty) tube, email donate empty tube thankyou you imformation sorry for MY inglish IS litle understood BYE:)
Eileen Goldenberg 1. Watercolors do not have genders. 2. Not all watercolorist are female. 3. "Guys" does not refer just to males. It's used as a umbrella term for a audience of mixed genders. 4. Work on your grammar. 5. Stop being stupid. PLEASE!,,,thanks
With every video you make I fall more in love with your desk area. It's seems so personalized while still being organized, it's lovely!
thanks! :)
Longevity: I was gifted a lovely set of 36 Cotman pan paints waaaaaaaaaaaay back in 1989 upon my graduation. I have used them sparingly until recently (when I began painting more with watercolor), and I have to say, they have held up well all these years.
I absolutely love how you store your paint tubes! Your work space is so nice.
Hey, great video. I suppose it should be mentioned that a few accomplished professional watercolor artists use Cotman water colors. Oh im so happy of having find ur channel!! I love ur approach to this wanderful marvelous subject. Cheers from México!
Your art room is beautiful and sunny. Your background is very pleasing to the eye.
I have the full set of the cotman pans (was a bargain!). But personally I really have to work hard to get the color out of the pans! And i find the browns very weak in color.

Look at the pigment used and see which color uses the same pigmnet
Hello 😊 thank you for your video ... If I may ask about the cotman tubes their light fastness, is it good ? I only have the cotman range where I live. Thanks a lot.
I've watched several of your videos this evening. I like your style of explaining things. Very clear, very simple. I have one question: What if you can't draw? I have no skill at drawing anything. I love the watercolor concept and techniques. But, if I can't create an image to work from by myself, it seems like I should be doing something else. Any suggestions? Thanks!
if you wanna draw then practice no one is born with the skill to draw it's something you can learn
Sherry Utah you can get water color coloring books
Your videos are yery high quality. You should have more viewers... love the background :3
great review and very helpful ! Thank you very much!
Awesome video--thank you!
what about chinese cotman and chinese winsor and newton with not label in aliexpress? can you buyit and make una comparacion. sorry my english has over.
So you only use paint straight out of the tube and fresh ? ??
I tend to like the vibrancy of the paint directly from the tube. However, I do have a palette where I allow my paints to dry and use them for details and pastel colors. So, I use both dried and fresh paint :)
+Watercolor Misfit (Carrie K. Luc) I use pans only and I can't get pretty vibrant colors with them. (van gogh,w&n, St Petersbourg and schminke ). I mean you can achieve vibrancy with the dried form of watercolor ^^
Lexou-chan if you look behind her head she has a pallet that has the dried paints on it
You're so sweet! I love your videos! Will you do other watercolor brand reviews like Schminke? For people like me who are debating which brand to splurge on for my first high end palette?
Will you also do a desk tour? Your stuff looks super Cool!!! Xx
Much love
Lauren
A tour is coming soon! I unfortunately won't be reviewing any other paints besides the one's I've already done bc I don't own any others :( Maybe one day in the future though :) Thanks for commenting :D

This is the kind of video I've been waiting for my whole life haha great video👍🏼
Btw, your desk area is so organized and clean.. Mine looks like a junk yard😭
Thank you. Love your studio/work area :)
Новичкам может показаться, что различий нет, но при работе с красками Cotman, заметил, что мои смеси с Burnt sienna и Ultramarine работают совсем не так как с профессиональными сериями.
I use both pan and tube cotmans
have you used reeves? there about $10 , for 12 tubes. I think there 15mm,but im not sure :/
It's good for beginners but I personally don't like them. I have the small sketchers box because it was recommended but I found out I prefered bigger mixing spaces and the pans were very hard to get pigment. I prefer white nights or for sketchbooks, prang.
I don't like the Pocket Plus sets including white. I would prefer another colour, such as Purple lake
you just got a new subscriber >w< you are sooooooo awesome
Awesome! Welcome! :D
There also are professional watercolor pans in winsor and Newton....
Thank you for this video, very helpful :)
Aint the transparent version missed in the test...?
One should check Anna Mason's work online. She recommends WN pan sets exclusively
I live in the tropics and my Daniel smith got moldy 😢
Pentel watercolor review pls !!
I dream with a place like that...
Do you like to use oil paint ?
No Cotmans for me, they cost like 10€ per pan in local art shop
For being a artist or whatever, she's actually clean and tidy in her room
No mess everything's in its place! Nice and clean
you just got another subscriber from malaysia 😄😄.. love ur vid alot 🤗
Your workplace is literally my dream. I have the pan set and I think one of the biggest turn downs of the palette is the white.... I don't know how to use a pan white (?)
Maybe just to make colours lighter? Or maybe iv you are making a differeng colour. Idk
white paint is great for highlights to either make ur painting look more 3-D..u can make really cool effects with the white..
Yep, tube paints are better..but if you have a dip pen of some sort, you can water down tge pan and use it as white ink..
great video for young children!
I'll take those pan paints off your hands... lol

Her eyebrows thou 😆😆😆😂😂😂
Imagine being so immature that you have to poke fun at someone's appearance
Did you know that all watercolors are FEMALE, like you, and your audience is not "guys" PLEASE!,,,thanks
Eileen Goldenberg That's not how grammar works...
Are you fucking stupid? "Guys" isn't just for males, they're gender neutral
did u draw ur eyebrows? U CAN DO BETTER I KNOW IT!
