Thank you! This video helped out a lot on a diagnosis of an old 80's geothermal unit. I looked at the 909 and said to myself "what is this and why is it leaking?" Now the unit is fixed and the geo is up and running! Appreciate it!
Hi Sean, I found this video helpful. I tested a 2" 909 this morning and it failed the relief opening (1.4). I rebuilt it 3 years ago. It might need another rebuild. I am going to take it apart, inspect, clean and reassemble it. Hopefully it will open above 2! Thanks for making this video! Rob, UT #16211.
Over the years I had to fix valves that had homeowner installed parts backwards, upside down, and even forgot to install some. That is what training classes are for. I am surprised you did not get more drips from that assembly since you did not flush the petcocks to get the air and any trash out. Sometimes it takes a few minutes for the new seals to seat before all the small drips stop. Good video!
Hello and thank you for the video. I have a problem with post start up. I did as instructed and was able to get the seal for the valve and pressurize my sprinkler manifold. The problem starts when I open a "zone" to irrigate. The zone is open, water goes through the solenoid but stops then water backs up flowing out from the bonnet. I tried different zones and the same problem occurs. Everything checks out inside the Valve. Help! John
John. What model do you have? What do you mean by bonnet? I ask because this video is about a Watts 909 backflow assembly and a bonnet is on a different type of backflow assembly. We might have better luck talking on the phone about this 801-355-6736 or by email at sean@backflow-supply.com. We will be closed Saturday and Sunday but I will see the email on Monday. I will be here for about an hour yet today (until 6:00 PM mountain time)
I’m just got my back-flow license but don’t have a lot of experience, I’m trying to fix a leaking 3” 909 relief is leaking dripping all the time I replaced all rubber parts in the assembly any ideas what else I can try?
So on that relief valve stem, does that "piston" with the red oring supposed to slide on that stem to compress the spring? Im rebuilding an 1½" 909 at the moment but it keeps blowing out the relief. Ive taken it apart 3 times now and this last time i checked, the "piston" wont move. Is that a problem??
No. That part where the red-ring sits does not move independently. The water pressure will push on the diaphragm and push the whole stem in compressing the spring. If you notice on the spring end of the stem is a nut and washer. That nut will sit in a recess further in the body and the washer will sit outside of the recess. When the pressure pushes the stem it compresses the spring and moves the stem to push the brass piece with the rubber molded into it onto the seat and the "piston" portion with the red o-ring to where it needs to sit against the body. If you need more help call me at 801-355-6736 or email sean@backflow-supply.com
hi sean,i have watts 009 m3 qt 3/4 the relief valve is dripping, can you tell me what’s wrong with it.the backflow valve is in basement of the 2 stories building. thank you
Joseph we may need to talk on the phone. 801-355-6736. There are some trouble shooting techniques we can use to determine where the issue is. What does this go to? Is what constantly going through this, meaning that water is constantly going to something open downstream of the assembly? If it doesn't have water going through it all the time does it stop leaking when there is a flow? Does it slow it down or leave it unchanged. Since this is in a basement does it stop leaking if you close the outlet shut off valve? Like I said it might be better if we talk on the phone, or if you prefer even email me at sean@backflow-supply.com.

I have the problem of liquefaction, my question is if that model can be replaced by another or can I connect it directly. because the part to replace is very expensive.

Yes, I am as well. I did go on to test it after the video and bleed the test cocks obviously and it tested out fine. Sometimes we get lucky!
Good video

For any irrigation backflow I would only install a Wilkins 375 or 975. So much easier to service.
