For those who have played AOE or some medieval strategy games, perhaps this machine is not too strange anymore.
Ballista is basically a weapon found in all ancient civilizations. It was developed from the first Greek crossbow.
The first version of Ballista could not only shoot heavy arrows, but also shoot small spherical stones. However, shooting small stones was ineffective, so Ballista's later improvements focused on improving the range and power of the large arrows instead of embracing the whole head.
The Greeks considered it a siege weapon. They also placed it inside large mobile battle towers and turned it into a real "tank".
