maybe its a code thing, like a virus that deletes random memories, hence why its a "sloppy" job. animatronics, even bio-mechanical ones, can get computer viruses, even just by touching suits or booby-trapped items, like the otter toy. they can rewrite each other's code and enter their mindscapes by brushing against each other for just a moment.
