    Iam born and raised in JHB and I went to Sao Paulo last year, they are so so similar.. Lots of people, lots of building, huge cities. And Rio is a bit like Cape Town.

    Thanks for posting the video ..I grew up there in the 60's ... I know theres been big changes . I like to see the old buildings still intact, the 20/30s block were so attractive.
    Doesn't look as run down as people would have you think, a trip down google street view showed me that. Cheers

    Would I be correct in assuming that Johannesburg is similar to any large city in Canada or the United States? I have never been but I would love to go some day. Looks great.

    I don't know the name of this song. Its from a podcast called Digital Project, by a ZA DJ Matt Gray. I chopped it outta there and formatted it to fit this.
    The episode was "Downsouth Breaks Show 07 on MuthaFm.com" He makes AWESOME mixes so subscribe to his podcast or go to the website. Hope he doesn't mind me using them...

    Hillbrow, and Braamfontein certainly don't look affluent and urban. Thank you for the video btw! One of the only good ones that show the two faces of Joburg,

    You sir are wrong. Johannesburg is a fairly developed at modern city, especially by African standards, but it is nothing compared to cities like Toronto or Vancouver in Canada. Johannesburg still has rampant poverty and many poor slums. We have 0 slums in Canada. Almost everyone in our cities is happy and has a lot more money than people in jo burg. Also jo burg has an extremely high crime rate and is a lot less safe. Yes it is a fairly nice city in Africa, but not ahead of Canada or Australia.

    It is and isn't. Joburg has massive wealth and luxury like I have yet to see in Europe (living in Scandinavia now), however, it also suffers from poverty, and a corrupt racist political system. Very extraordinary place

    Detroit? Looks like you're improving!

    • @Daveissa87
      @Daveissa87 9 лет назад

      Omid Gul Truth is I haven't been to Detroit since 2012. I've been 4 times in my life. I have cousins who live in Dearborn right by the city. I don't know if it's improved since 2012, but the city looked like it was gone for good. I think it will take a solid 30 years of heavy gentrification to make Detroit somewhat decent. A waterfront is a start. But how about simply getting the street lights working. Detroit is nearly pitch black at night. Cutting the grass in public parks. Such basic things which locals themselves need to do if the city wont.

    • @Daveissa87
      @Daveissa87 9 лет назад

      Omid Gul That's good to here. Detroit is the only city that should welcome hipsters lol. Detroit needs young white people to move into the city to improve it. I know that sounds kind of racist, but it's definitely needed. Here in California the Mexicans clean up areas that were previously Black. However, they bring down areas that were previously White loool.

    I doubt that South Africa is ahead of Canada economically, in fact I know they are not, our GDP is much higher. SA might be a nice place for Africa but not comparable to Canada.

    I've left JHB. Yes, the stories are real, on the other hand. You live like a king in JHB, massive properties, maids, swimming pools, good food. Try Cape Town, that place is much safer and more tourist friendly. JHB takes a level of street smarts that leave mose foreigners quite vulnerable.

      Cape Town is also dangerous and the townships there are just as bad or even worse than the townships of Johannesburg.

    Yes and no. Johannesburg is really 2 (or more cities) in 1. Most of Johannesburg and its northern suburbs are modern with high living standards like any NA city. But the city still has the infrastructure of apartheid and is surrounded by third world slums and has very violent, dilapidated sections too. Kind of like Baltimore, where I grew up, just more extreme.
