I learn that the bad way, I enter film school expectin they would teach me how to edit videos for example... they where expectin I arleady knew how to, the say to us in day 1: "make a group of no less of five, no more of seven and make for us a minute long movie for next week". Myself, like 80% of the class that year, of like 2000 people didin't make it to second year, 50% quit in the second month.

Lars Olavsgaard Stop motion is incredibly difficult and time consuming. If you want to make stop motion films you should learn it but it isn’t for everyone. If someone’s goal is to make live action films then they should pursue that, not stop motion.
@@gkkenobi3988 Yeah, stop motion is an entirely different creative experience than live action filmmaking. I personally love watching stop motion, but my attempt at it taught me that it's not for me. It's nothing like working on a live set. Doing stop motion is all about precision and small movements; it can be a very solitary and technical production that requires immense patience. Live filmmaking is collaborative and brings a shared energy to the set; you also see the results in real-time, so you can tell when it works vs when it doesn't.

It isn’t gonna be anything amazing but neither is doing stop motion. Just to do a walk cycle with stop motion takes hours of work. To film a character walking in live action takes only a few minutes.
This is actually, why I wanna be a writer. I mean today, in most of industries you can be succesful only if you have a friend at court. But on writing industry all you have is your talent. Isnt it obvious? You can not fake writing.
True, but we could argue that 'process' is more important than actual 'talent' or craft, or good process can maximise talent and craft. It's not talent that makes writers aware of their blindspots and weaknesses. We could argue 'process' is what separates those who consistently write great work, and those who don't.

Because I worked my ass off in high school, I am actually going to college for free in my state. Due to this I feel film school is my path. I thrive in school environments and I’m excited to go in the fall.
I’m a senior in high school. I believe that I need to go to film school so I may have a better grasp and understanding of film as a whole rather than know nothing or just learning on the internet. And most of what I hear for getting I to the industry is not your degree but what you have made. That’s my reason. Thanks for the video!

I was thinking the same thing. Not that I rely entirely on film school, it's not that. I just don't wanna jump into something that I don't know much about. Let me give you an example. I'm a HS senior too and I worked hard for my grades. Was it easy getting those good grades? No. Could I have technically taught myself a majority of the material in Maths, Physics and whatnot through an immense amount of work? Yes , sure. Do I prefer going to school so I get the foundation of the subject, the introduction, but ultimately perfectioning my knowledge at home by working and studying? Yes. Not only do I prefer it, that's the true way how it works. To conclude: I could teach myself all this, or most of it. I mean there are libraries with tons of books and we got a wondeful invention called the Internet. Interviews and podcasts by countless directors, people like Tyler Mowery etc. But I feel like it would simply be more beneficial for me to be given an insight and professional advice to start with. Be it Screenwriting, basic knowledge about Cinematography or even psychological tricks to play with the viewer's mind. Sort of a relief to see that others (even people who are my age) are in a similar situation. Hope you figure out what's best for you, and if it's Film School: I hope you'll do well bud!
@@Spirit365 I’m now a Junior at University with a communication major, concentration of media applications and a film minor. I still stick with what I’ve said, and I’ve gotten a pretty good grasp and even made a couple short films along the way. One of which I’ve won an award for Cinematography. Right now I’m just looking at career plans and any internships. So to me, going to college has helped me find my footing.

I would also recommend watching Accented Cinema's video on film school as I think that one gives a pretty fair assessment on the pros and cons of goinf to film school or not. A lot of times with these "should you go to film school or not?" videos, the answer is most of the times yes but they really just give the same answer about the cost. The value of the degree doesn't come from the degree itself but what you make of it. And I think Accented Cinema's video on it will give you a more balanced take on films schools, compared to other film school videos. Give it a watch, I think if may be really helpful.
Film School would have been great if it was affordable and cost effective. Everyone wants the confidence education can bring. It’s not the time people spend that is the problem, it’s the money which most often doesn’t feel equally proportional to the returns it offers.
I just got my film school certification. I want to be a screenwriter and direct. Finished my first script working on my 2nd, already have an idea for the 3rd script. Its hard work. You have to be ahead of everything and accept criticism. If you're a procastinator, youre not going to make it.
I applied to university.. Yesterday and... This calmed me down. I completely agree with what you said. It truly depends on the person and how they work. I started to individually study film about two years ago. Sure I have experience, but on a personal note feel like I need that push and pressure from a school. Regardless, thank you for the video!
Brilliant video and explained VERY well. I'm 20 and this is my second attempt at university studying film and I just can't get my head around it. I've learned more by doing my own research and going out there and making my own films. The only way I learn more about the craft is by DOING and it feels like university is slowing me down 100%. Nobody around me (On my course) actually want's to do film in the future so it begs the question: why am I still here? This video has motivated me to continue doing what I love and continue working at my own pace and making films.
If you intend on going to film school, you should be doing it for the connections and internship/exchange opportunities, NOT for the actual information or courses. You could be spending the money for that tuition on funding your own movie, hiring editors, agents or pitch meetings/courses. J.K. Rowling didn't study writing and Harry Potter was rejected, I believe, 18 times. The same goes for Stranger Things and Breaking Bad. You have to just be persistent, patient and, most of all, passionate.

Very good call out, I am a part time composer and have had the chance to work with USC film school a Alumni on a few indie features and would just add one important thing.....it’s a lot about positioning the big schools position you better in the industry you get introduced to the contacts, you intern with proven directors, etc etc....this is valuable.....but those schools are so expensive.....very challenging

I think this is another important thing Tyler didnt point out: sometimesyouhave to move to a big city where the industry you want towork in is, to be able to network frequently, take on jobs opportunities without having to travel there and pay hotels etc. The competition there might be more, but if you live in a town with no industry, of course there is no competition, because there is nothing to compete for.
What I got out of film school was a fellowship with Sesame Street, an internship at The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and connections with come brilliant students, professors and industry professionals. Additionally, I was given access to the tools necessary to get my screenplays produced and entered into festivals without having to spend any of my own money. But all of that aside, my work on the sets of Chicago Fire, Chicago Med, Chicago PD, Shameless, Batwoman, The Chi, and various other films and tv shows was the result of hard work.

Great content, Tyler. Thanks for reiterating your message that the only way to become a good writer is by writing consistently! and by developing the strong work ethics to continually write and improve over time.
The answer to this is a resounding NO! And I say this as someone who has suffered 3 years of a shitty degree course. I learned so, SO much more by just DOING. Trial and error. Pushing myself to make an independent film. Taking the time to write a script I could be somewhat proud of. There may be a few positives but £9k a year (in the UK), it’s totally not worth it. On the networking front, that’s been a total disappointment too. The only modicum of success I have experienced is through my own independent filmmaking pursuits.
Your experience is very appreciated, I know they say it’s a waste,they say you could have used the money to make your own film. With what money or equipment? I think it’s worth it if you don’t have much and the school is hands on that provide the gear to get started, like my school provides equipment to keep and they’re personal equipment to be used for life even after graduating. Also financial aid is available.
You should consider using Twitch to livestream screenwriting sessions and start from the basics (getting an idea, outlining, coming up with a logline, synopsis and treatment) and then writing a script. It would take multiple months just to do all of that. Then, you could cut up and edit together short video sessions for RUclips directly from those Twitch presentations. I bet you would get a lot of followers (and paid subscribers on Twitch) which would also feed into and promote your Practical Screenwriting presence. Let me know if you want/need any (free) help with the process. A lot of people who stream on Twitch say that it helps them stick with a plan and improve their own writing. In any event, I'm enjoying your videos and your insight. Keep it up!
Thanks for the message! I love writing but I'm always so obsessed with not having enough training, knowledge... and that's why I'm afraid of not taking the film school path. Anyway, I agree that in the end the most important part is knowing yourself and be aware of what you really need.

Fun or unique video essays, Patrick (H) Willems and Every Frame a Painting. But there are so many great videos from others on the list too. I would suggest just scrolling thru the list and pick some that are about movies or topics you're interested in. People trying to become professional writers need to compare their work ethic to that of professional athletes. You don’t get better if you don’t consistently practice with focus and determination to improve. If you’re trying to become a professional basketball player, you would never achieve your goals by practicing the bare minimum. You have to grind and push yourself to get better every day with or without film school. If it feels easy then you’re not pushing yourself enough to be better. Great video.
Biggest advantage of Film School is that they will provide you with at least minimum resources to create multiple projects during your stay there. At such young age no one will give u that opportunity except film school. It will provide u with actors,equipement,connections,cinematographer, and you will constantly be around people who wants to be in that industry so you can maybe even meet your lifelong team for making movies. It is easy to give examples of people making it without film school but everytime you go deeper into those examples you can see that those are people who was born in right city, right street, who knew somebody who made it so that someone can help them made it, or are just pure pure geniouses and you cant count on that.
You mentioned being honest about your mistakes and using them as a means for improvement. I think that just means to overcome the fear of failure and never give up. The master has failed more times than the beginner has even tried
I hated school. Not because of the curriculum but the professors. I was literally told by a professor to pull back because I was outshining my classmates. “It’s not a competition.” That same year I was hired by HBO, worked in the writers room on VEEP. Haven’t been back to school since.
I agree 100%, I learned this the hard way. I wasn't putting in any work and exepecting teachers and courses to do it for me. This was in music, but it aplies to film as well. There is no substitute for hard work.
I want to become a filmmaker and I had just dropped out of school because it wasn’t for me and I didn’t have the money and plus I was only taking 1 class which had nothing to do with my goal so what is it that I do now because I can’t be in the film industry if I have no connections no money all I got is A RUclips Channel a IPhone12 and a couple of tripods
A film school degree may actually hurt your chances because seeing it on a resume is a signal that 1) you have access to money and comfort so 14+ hour days might not be your thing, and 2) you may be a know-it-all on set where being a team-player who stays in your own lane is crucial. Much better path is just go work in the business -- pull cables, wrangle data (that is real position now), production assistant, Asst CO. In Los Angeles one of the ways to get on a crew was to play softball in Pacific Palisades (!) Lots of crews play against each other on down days and it builds the team cohesive thing. A good path to writer is intern as an Assistant to the Script Supervisor on a production. Save $XX,XXX of film school tuition and just work free or stipend for 28 days instead. Going to disagree a little with Tyler here -- being able to work alone is less important than being able to work as part of a team.
My problem is that i don’t want to close doors in my life. I am a person who commits and will not quit once i get invested. I am currently at a junior college do to the that i still haven’t chosen a path. I am afraid once i choose a path that will be it, all other doors close.
I have the same problem. There are so many things I feel like investing but need to choose one because once I start I will not pay attention to the other things.
As somebody just about to graduate with a Major in Film Production and a Minor in Screenwriting, I do not regret going one bit. That's not to say everyone should do it but right after highschool, the ONLY thing I was certain about is that I wanted to make movies. However, I did not know where to begin, I didn't have any peers who shared my interests and I was also just not feeling ready to grow up quite yet. Getting my film degree allowed me the opportunity to learn, most importantly to FAIL in a safe, constructive environment. I have also gotten the buffer I needed between chapters in life and I developed countless friendships I otherwise would not have. If you're currently in a position where film is your passion but you don't know where to begin, film school may be the training wheels you need. But maybe not! Only you know.

This is a good video with great points, however I would not advise people to go to school specifically for screenwriting. Reason being, there is not a set path to becoming a screenwriter and it can take several years before you can make a living off of it. Meanwhile, you'll have racked up sizable debt which is hard to truly fathom at 18, but when you're in your mid to late 20s you'll be kicking yourself in the ass for not taking that more seriously. If you're going to go to film school, I would recommend majoring in something more technical such as editing or sound because you can quickly find work in these fields while you still continue to write and educate yourself. If you insist on going to film school...put more of an emphasis in trying to complete as many student films as possible, learning your cameras, and getting as technical as possible because you can use that knowledge to continue making more films once you graduate.
This is perfect timing for me! I’ve been in an exhausting mental debate about attending film school for months. This video really helped to break it down and show me, it doesn’t really matter. I vote for either psichology or philosophy. They could give you ideas or even entire outlines for character building, traits, arcs. It can be useful. I've done it. It has been moderately useful to me.
I agree with most of what was said. I learned so much more on my own in preparation for my application to my schools film program For some background, I only recently realized filmmaking is my passion, so I was starting from scratch with no prior experience or artistic work I’ve learned a lot more from RUclips than most of my classes, they’re really only good for hands on experience and networking but the skills you unfortunately have to learn on your own. I wish it wasn’t that way and more aspiring artists could have the resources and support to nurture their skills but anyways I’m starting to wonder if the film program at my school is worth it for me, I have plenty of friends in it that constantly criticize the quality of education theyre receiving for good reason and I don’t know if it’s worth it for me to continue to pay thousands just to network

If you are fan of Kurosawa san. Then I strongly recommend "Compound Cinematics: Akira Kurosawa and I". It is written by Shinobu Hashimoto ,one of the co-writers of Kurosawa gumi. It's a great book. In the book, writers shared his experiences about working with Kurosawa and even his own views about writing. And don't take him so light. He had written solely the screenplays of the masterpieces like harakiri and samurai rebellion. You can check the reviews of both the movies. Their IMDb ratings are above 8.1 and they are included in Roger Ebert's great movie list.
As a student who is transferring into a film school do I think I need it? No not all but I think it’s smart because school gives you this chance to make connects even at this community college I am Making connects plus u got to be ready to fail and pick yourself up and keep going
Film school is def not worth it, just get a degree in something that can help you make some money after graduation while consistently writing on the side. Its not worth going in debt for a degree that wont make you money right away to pay it off
Luis Marquez the degree might not be useful, but what you are taught it is. You can learn by yourself but it's never the same as learning from people that actually understand, and can guide you in how to develop as filmmaker/writer etc.
FYI. Big production companies that my daughter was able to get paid internship, which gave her connections and broader views into the business asked where she was attending and her GPA. Chapman film school screenwriting major was much recognized in the real world and gave her enormous opportunities.
College kids will be lost without proper guidance and load map to get into the film business. So film school was a good choice for my daughter. She said she learning so much which she doesn't think she could've done it herself. Just make sure you get a good scholarship.

I think what your saying is better depicted in a vin diagram with path that your stating for success in the middle where the circles overlap because then it is achieved both in and out of film school.
Don't stay stuck on that 1st script. Move on to writing script 2. Then write script 3. Once script 3 first draft is finished, it will be a whole lot better that script 1 first draft. Now you may work on rewriting script 1. Hope this helps. 🙂
You might be better at writing when there is a little bit less of a script, so that your creative intuition gets its chance to stay creative throughout the WHOLE process of writing.
I transitioned into film school from my original college course of fashion. Best decision I ever made for myself in my entire student life. I was lucky I had the professors that I had, made the friends that I did, had the courses that my school offered. It's not perfect, but I'm lucky than I guess the ones that went to one w shitty people.
I am from India. And I am doing B.Sc in Biology. This is my 1st year. And I think that I will fail. Cause I'm not interested in it. I want to become a writer-director. But I am not happy with the current situation. Lot of great filmmakers like Steven Spielberg, Damien Chazelle got their break at early 20s. Next month I will turn 21. But I face lot of criticisms from my family. I want to be in film school like USC. My father is a doctor but he didn't have enough money to put me in best film schools. Sometimes I don't even like the situation.

Because I worked my ass off in high school, I am actually going to college for free in my state. Due to this I feel film school is my path. I thrive in school environments and I’m excited to go in the fall.

I’m a senior in high school. I believe that I need to go to film school so I may have a better grasp and understanding of film as a whole rather than know nothing or just learning on the internet. I was thinking the same thing. Not that I rely entirely on film school, it's not that. I just don't wanna jump into something that I don't know much about.
Let me give you an example. I'm a HS senior too and I worked hard for my grades. Was it easy getting those good grades? No. Could I have technically taught myself a majority of the material in Maths, Physics and whatnot through an immense amount of work? Yes , sure.
Do I prefer going to school so I get the foundation of the subject, the introduction, but ultimately perfectioning my knowledge at home by working and studying? Yes. Not only do I prefer it, that's the true way how it works.
To conclude: I could teach myself all this, or most of it. I mean there are libraries with tons of books and we got a wondeful invention called the Internet. Interviews and podcasts by countless directors, people like Tyler Mowery etc.
But I feel like it would simply be more beneficial for me to be given an insight and professional advice to start with. Be it Screenwriting, basic knowledge about Cinematography or even psychological tricks to play with the viewer's mind.
Sort of a relief to see that others (even people who are my age) are in a similar situation.

@@Spirit365 I’m now a Junior at University with a communication major, concentration of media applications and a film minor. I still stick with what I’ve said, and I’ve gotten a pretty good grasp and even made a couple short films along the way. One of which I’ve won an award for Cinematography. Right now I’m just looking at career plans and any internships. So to me, going to college has helped me find my footing.

I would also recommend watching Accented Cinema's video on film school as I think that one gives a pretty fair assessment on the pros and cons of goinf to film school or not. A lot of times with these "should you go to film school or not?" videos, the answer is most of the times yes but they really just give the same answer about the cost. The value of the degree doesn't come from the degree itself but what you make of it. And I think Accented Cinema's video on it will give you a more balanced take on films schools, compared to other film school videos. Give it a watch, I think if may be really helpful.

Film School would have been great if it was affordable and cost effective. Everyone wants the confidence education can bring. It’s not the time people spend that is the problem, it’s the money which most often doesn’t feel equally proportional to the returns it offers.
I just got my film school certification. I want to be a screenwriter and direct. Finished my first script working on my 2nd, already have an idea for the 3rd script. Its hard work. You have to be ahead of everything and accept criticism. If you're a procastinator, youre not going to make it.
I applied to university.. Yesterday and... This calmed me down. I completely agree with what you said. It truly depends on the person and how they work. I started to individually study film about two years ago. Sure I have experience, but on a personal note feel like I need that push and pressure from a school. Regardless, thank you for the video!

Brilliant video and explained VERY well. I'm 20 and this is my second attempt at university studying film and I just can't get my head around it. I've learned more by doing my own research and going out there and making my own films. The only way I learn more about the craft is by DOING and it feels like university is slowing me down 100%. Nobody around me (On my course) actually want's to do film in the future so it begs the question: why am I still here? This video has motivated me to continue doing what I love and continue working at my own pace and making films.
If you intend on going to film school, you should be doing it for the connections and internship/exchange opportunities, NOT for the actual information or courses. You could be spending the money for that tuition on funding your own movie, hiring editors, agents or pitch meetings/courses. J.K. Rowling didn't study writing and Harry Potter was rejected, I believe, 18 times. The same goes for Stranger Things and Breaking Bad. You have to just be persistent, patient and, most of all, passionate.

I love the way you answer questions, it looks exactly like how you work on your screenplay : You look deeper and deeper and ask yourself "What's the true question behind it ?" and it's great because most of the time you don't end with a yes or no answer, but the viewer makes his decision.

Alumni on a few indie features and would just add one important thing.....it’s a lot about positioning the big schools position you better in the industry you get introduced to the contacts, you intern with proven directors, etc etc....this is valuable.....but those schools are so expensive.....very challenging

I think this is another important thing Tyler didnt point out: sometimesyouhave to move to a big city where the industry you want towork in is, to be able to network frequently, take on jobs opportunities without having to travel there and pay hotels etc. The competition there might be more, but if you live in a town with no industry, of course there is no competition, because there is nothing to compete for.

What I got out of film school was a fellowship with Sesame Street, an internship at The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and connections with come brilliant students, professors and industry professionals. Additionally, I was given access to the tools necessary to get my screenplays produced and entered into festivals without having to spend any of my own money. But all of that aside, my work on the sets of Chicago Fire, Chicago Med, Chicago PD, Shameless, Batwoman, The Chi, and various other films and tv shows was the result of hard work.

The answer to this is a resounding NO! And I say this as someone who has suffered 3 years of a shitty degree course. I learned so, SO much more by just DOING. Trial and error. Pushing myself to make an independent film. Taking the time to write a script I could be somewhat proud of.
There may be a few positives but £9k a year (in the UK), it’s totally not worth it.
On the networking front, that’s been a total disappointment too. The only modicum of success I have experienced is through my own independent filmmaking pursuits.
Oof if £9k is a lot in the UK, the prices in the US are HORRIFIC
Your experience is very appreciated, I know they say it’s a waste,they say you could have used the money to make your own film. With what money or equipment? I think it’s worth it if you don’t have much and the school is hands on that provide the gear to get started, like my school provides equipment to keep and they’re personal equipment to be used for life even after graduating. Also financial aid is available.
You should consider using Twitch to livestream screenwriting sessions and start from the basics (getting an idea, outlining, coming up with a logline, synopsis and treatment) and then writing a script.
It would take multiple months just to do all of that. Then, you could cut up and edit together short video sessions for RUclips directly from those Twitch presentations.
I bet you would get a lot of followers (and paid subscribers on Twitch) which would also feed into and promote your Practical Screenwriting presence.
Let me know if you want/need any (free) help with the process.
A lot of people who stream on Twitch say that it helps them stick with a plan and improve their own writing.

People trying to become professional writers need to compare their work ethic to that of professional athletes. You don’t get better if you don’t consistently practice with focus and determination to improve. If you’re trying to become a professional basketball player, you would never achieve your goals by practicing the bare minimum. You have to grind and push yourself to get better every day with or without film school. If it feels easy then you’re not pushing yourself enough to be better. Great video.
Biggest advantage of Film School is that they will provide you with at least minimum resources to create multiple projects during your stay there. At such young age no one will give u that opportunity except film school.
It will provide u with actors,equipement,connections,cinematographer, and you will constantly be around people who wants to be in that industry so you can maybe even meet your lifelong team for making movies. It is easy to give examples of people making it without film school but everytime you go deeper into those examples you can see that those are people who was born in right city, right street, who knew somebody who made it so that someone can help them made it, or are just pure pure geniouses and you cant count on that.

I hated school. Not because of the curriculum but the professors. I was literally told by a professor to pull back because I was outshining my classmates. “It’s not a competition.” That same year I was hired by HBO, worked in the writers room on VEEP. Haven’t been back to school since.

I agree 100%, I learned this the hard way. I wasn't putting in any work and exepecting teachers and courses to do it for me. This was in music, but it aplies to film as well.

A film school degree may actually hurt your chances because seeing it on a resume is a signal that 1) you have access to money and comfort so 14+ hour days might not be your thing, and 2) you may be a know-it-all on set where being a team-player who stays in your own lane is crucial. Much better path is just go work in the business -- pull cables, wrangle data (that is real position now), production assistant, Asst CO. In Los Angeles one of the ways to get on a crew was to play softball in Pacific Palisades (!) Lots of crews play against each other on down days and it builds the team cohesive thing. A good path to writer is intern as an Assistant to the Script Supervisor on a production. Save $XX,XXX of film school tuition and just work free or stipend for 28 days instead. Going to disagree a little with Tyler here -- being able to work alone is less important than being able to work as part of a team.
My problem is that i don’t want to close doors in my life. I am a person who commits and will not quit once i get invested. I am currently at a junior college do to the that i still haven’t chosen a path. I am afraid once i choose a path that will be it, all other doors close.
I have the same problem. There are so many things I feel like investing but need to choose one because once I start I will not pay attention to the other things.
As somebody just about to graduate with a Major in Film Production and a Minor in Screenwriting, I do not regret going one bit. That's not to say everyone should do it but right after highschool, the ONLY thing I was certain about is that I wanted to make movies. However, I did not know where to begin, I didn't have any peers who shared my interests and I was also just not feeling ready to grow up quite yet. Getting my film degree allowed me the opportunity to learn, most importantly to FAIL in a safe, constructive environment. I have also gotten the buffer I needed between chapters in life and I developed countless friendships I otherwise would not have. If you're currently in a position where film is your passion but you don't know where to begin, film school may be the training wheels you need. But maybe not! Only you know.

This is a good video with great points, however I would not advise people to go to school specifically for screenwriting. Reason being, there is not a set path to becoming a screenwriter and it can take several years before you can make a living off of it. Meanwhile, you'll have racked up sizable debt which is hard to truly fathom at 18, but when you're in your mid to late 20s you'll be kicking yourself in the ass for not taking that more seriously. If you're going to go to film school, I would recommend majoring in something more technical such as editing or sound
because you can quickly find work in these fields while you still continue to write and educate yourself. If you insist on going to film school...put more of an emphasis in trying to complete as many student films as possible, learning your cameras, and getting as technical as possible because you can use that knowledge to continue making more films once you graduate.

I vote for either psichology or philosophy. They could give you ideas or even entire outlines for character building, traits, arcs. It can be useful. I've done it. It has been moderately useful to me.

For some background, I only recently realized filmmaking is my passion, so I was starting from scratch with no prior experience or artistic work
I’ve learned a lot more from RUclips than most of my classes, they’re really only good for hands on experience and networking but the skills you unfortunately have to learn on your own. I wish it wasn’t that way and more aspiring artists could have the resources and support to nurture their skills but anyways

If you are fan of Kurosawa san. Then I strongly recommend "Compound Cinematics: Akira Kurosawa and I". It is written by Shinobu Hashimoto ,one of the co-writers of Kurosawa gumi. It's a great book. In the book, writers shared his experiences about working with Kurosawa and even his own views about writing. And don't take him so light. He had written solely the screenplays of the masterpieces like harakiri and samurai rebellion. You can check the reviews of both the movies. Their IMDb ratings are above 8.1 and they are included in Roger Ebert's great movie list.

Luis Marquez the degree might not be useful, but what you are taught it is. You can learn by yourself but it's never the same as learning from people that actually understand, and can guide you in how to develop as filmmaker/writer etc.

FYI. Big production companies that my daughter was able to get paid internship, which gave her connections and broader views into the business asked where she was attending and her GPA. Chapman film school screenwriting major was much recognized in the real world and gave her enormous opportunities.
College kids will be lost without proper guidance and load map to get into the film business. So film school was a good choice for my daughter. She said she learning so much which she doesn't think she could've done it herself. Just make sure you get a good scholarship.
Film school provides structure and great networking and lets you make affordable mistakes

Can you make a video on how to/tips on rewriting a first draft? I just finished my first script and the rewriting process is driving me insane.
The second half of my course covers rewriting in detail!
Don't stay stuck on that 1st script. Move on to writing script 2. Then write script 3. Once script 3 first draft is finished, it will be a whole lot better that script 1 first draft. Now you may work on rewriting script 1. Hope this helps. 🙂

You might be better at writing when there is a little bit less of a script, so that your creative intuition gets its chance to stay creative throughout the WHOLE process of writing.
I transitioned into film school from my original college course of fashion. Best decision I ever made for myself in my entire student life. I was lucky I had the professors that I had, made the friends that I did, had the courses that my school offered. It's not perfect, but I'm lucky than I guess the ones that went to one w shitty people.

I am from India. And I am doing B.Sc in Biology. This is my 1st year. And I think that I will fail. Cause I'm not interested in it. I want to become a writer-director. But I am not happy with the current situation. Lot of great filmmakers like Steven Spielberg, Damien Chazelle got their break at early 20s. Next month I will turn 21. But I face lot of criticisms from my family. I want to be in film school like USC. My father is a doctor but he didn't have enough money to put me in best film schools. Sometimes I don't even like the situation.
