Subarus have always been under rated off road. Back in the mid 80's I lived in Perth and had a friend who had the first model Subaru Wagon (1974 I think?). He used to take it everywhere including climbing the big dunes near Lancelin. We went to the Kimberley, Pilberra and Northern Territory off roading everywhere and it never got stuck anywhere. In the Territory there was a 'Cruiser stuck half way up a gnarly hill and my friend just drove off the track and through the bush around the traffic jam and everyone there was gobsmaked as we gave them a wave on our way past. I have just bought a new 2022 Outback and am interested to see what it will be like. I will be getting underbody protection first.
I took the brand new late 2022 (2023 model) Outback to the Bribie Island in Qld. Yes exactly as you said, at the entrance there were lots of mates with traditional 4wds laughing as they thought a Subaru should never go real offroad. But actually it did pretty well never bogged. Everything was stock. I'm getting Ironman 2 inch lift, underbody protection and set of AT tyres. I will try Fraser next month.
The comradery and banter here makes me feel proud to be an Aussie The rock that tore out the radiator hose reminds me of when I was 18 in the "non 4x4, 4x4 club" with my mates. After having fun in the mud with an old 2wd 96 Courier we were going to leave and there was an old railway sleeper in the mud I assume someone used for traction in the wheel rut. I was asked "hey, do you want us to move it for you". My reply "nah, she'll be right". Unfortunately when I slid into to mud I went sideways and the sleeper wedged in between the axle housing and leaf springs. Like an absolute fluke. 6 hours later, I decided to use the "she'll be right" more intelligently. It was a great day out though

@@AustralianRuralAdventures pretty good, the tracks I wanted to head back on were gated, but I found a little track at the end of the arrester bed that gets you into the back of the local 4wd tracks in the hills. I had a gnarly wet slippery clay steep descent pingponging off rocks down a trail, but made it back up carefully at the end of the day 😊. Always dicier when you are alone though 😂

My wife sent me videos this morning while she was driving through some South African backwoods: the daily commute - all I could see was dust! We've eaten so many 4x4 trails with our Outback, they are REALLY great cars: economical and very capable offroad.
You can run most cars without the coolant cap, prevents it from building up pressure, it's not ideal but can help you limp home with a leak. Just have to keep topping it up as it boils over.
I just sold my Outback of the same model year and they are solid cars. Mine had done 250k km and the paint was still mint on it. Mine was a diesel and they had a crappy gear box ratio on 1st and 2nd, making it unable to tow heavy things from a stand still.
When having heating problems the rule of thumb is turn temp dial to hot and fan on full speed. This takes the heat away from the engine. It's what I do and you can drive for miles
The heater core uses hot coolant to flow through it and blows air through to produce heating air. No coolant = no heater and just the A/C fans spinning for fun. Never actually experienced this before but I believe this would be the case :)

Both of our Outback and Forester are 2019 year models. We take them on light duty mountain roads when we need to with the confidence that they will get us wherever we need to drive them. But for serious off road trips we take our 4X4 pickup. I’m sure my Forester Touring would get me to my fishing spot, but I simply don’t want my Subie to smell like dead fish on my way home. Even in our very snowy winter months, we’ve Never been stuck in our Subie’s.
Nice one boys. l've got a 'road less travelled' aluminium sump bash plate from a bloke in Vic for my BP9 Outback. It would take something serious to even dent it, it's that thick.

We get 5-7 feet of snow every winter and live on a private road that we have to plow and maintain ourselves. Once we turn off the county road and onto our road, we have to put our Subie’s into Xmode just to get up our road and into our garage. We live 5 miles from a small town and 25 miles from the city. Monday through Friday the county road is plowed as we are on a school bus route, but on the weekends we are on our own. There’s 9 families who live on our road and 6 of us own Subaru’s. Their Awesome vehicles. Prior to purchasing our Subaru’s we drove Toyota’s for 40+ years. Even our 4WD or AWD Toyota’s, we had to put studded winter tires on every year. Now with our Subie’s we use our factory tires year round until they wear out. Since we don’t drive our Subie’s for serious off roading, we have Michelin Cross Climate 2 tires that are fantastic on dry, wet, slush, and deep snow. They’re quiet and we don’t take a hit on our fuel consumption. My brother has them on his Outback as they live in rainy Portland Oregon. We told both of my brother and sister in laws about the Michelin Cross Climate 2 tires so they put them on their Outback’s as well and they too love them. They live in Montana, USA and get about the same amount of snow as we do. One of my brother and sister in laws but a new Outback every 6 years because they put 300K miles on their outback’s during those 6 years.
With a Cusco LSD up front and a Torq Locker in the back, an AWD Subie has at least as many wheels pulling as a typical 4WD. Some Subies can lock the center diff too, or close. The 2 main differences then are no 4Low and having fragile, susceptible plastic bumpers. If all 4 wheels are driving, articulation isn't as crucial. I have an unlifted 2016 Crosstrek on 225/60R17 AT Trails. It may get 215/75R15 Geolandar MTs and a rear locker soon. It already has skids and a winch. The winch means that it's already better at getting home than most flashy lifted 4WDs without one.
@@destnations5588 A lot of times, lifts can help with clearance angles, tire clearance, and travel/articulation. They can also negatively affect aerodynamics, alignment, drivetrain, ride, COG, payload/towing, and warranty though. Some aftermarket parts/systems are engineered/implemented better than others.
@@RKmndo Yeah, when I lifted mine with a 2 inch lift it changed the game, I could attack hills I hadn't dreamed of trying before, now I've got the Torq locker in, I just need to fix my transmission and replace all my suspension bushes and Ill be raring to go. Though I still might look at the front lsd.
I don't think the temp gauge will register the increased temperature when you've lost a significant amount of coolant. Good on you for keeping on filming, even when shit was happening!
A stock first gen outback has more ground clearance than 95% of the trucks and SUV’s sold at the time. LSD equipped Subarus have more traction than any open diff 4x4. Being light causes way less wear on all parts. My outback (I have vids on my channel) had 11.7” of actual ground clearance. LSD front and rear with low range centre box from Australia. I pulled out a lot of jeeps and trucks trying to follow me on trails.
Well, technically speaking Subarus are not 4WD, so what they say is correct. But you've demonstrated that you can do 4WD tracks in an AWD (excluding losing the radiator:D ), which is interesting! Regardless of this, to be honest, I think soon and with the advancements in traction control software that can imitate physical diff locks and other offroading technologies, we'll see many other cars doing these things with ease. Maybe the only difference between 4WDs and other cars would be the body-on-frame design.

I have subaxtreme plate. It's nice enough, but needs modding [cutting] for the H6 to clear the headers properly. (then you can piss the stupid spacer bracket off for the rear mount) also need to lathe down the front spacers so the front edge can sit on / clamp onto the radiator support uniformly, Happy days then.
Well i own 3 vehicles all 3 say AWD 1) 2008 Subaru Outback 2) a Landcruiser Prado D4D and 3rd a Landcruiser 200 series Sahara TTDV8 so if all 3 say AWD the Suby is in the same category :)

I do this in a FWD VW Caddy 1.9 TDI. The punchy torque helps, and traction control fuse pulled out

get some rescue tape, it will patch up cooling lines, electrical, oil, u name it.

You need a tarp in the car so if your in mud at least you can stay a little dry if you have get on the ground
As long as they dont bottom out they go through anything.
