As soon as I saw this I was like "What in the Condor?" Didn't get a good vibe from this one. Thanks for confirming my suspicion.
Hahaha 🤣
😂😂😂 "what in the condor"
That got me.
Dang that’s too bad the quality isn’t there on this one. I almost did the same thing the other day and bought this on a whim. Good thing I didn’t. Thanks again for the honest reviews.
I wonder if QC will be addressed.
The quality is there, its not a bushcraft knife.
Sounds like the old Schrade and Uncle Henry brass liner locks from the 80’s to early 2000’s I grew up using. Not a hard use item but a capable pocket knife.
Yeah this is how liner locks were originally designed. They weren't supposed to have constant contact against the lock bar. SAK liner locks are still the same way
I don’t understand why they source out knives and put their reputation in others hands. I guess this one wasn’t supposed to be though. I never heard anything bad about esee except for maybe the price. The lock on this pocket knife is terrible though. I’m an idiot and even I know they are recessed for safety. They can either jam or disengage.
Yep really strange
I have to admit despite your review I still like the design and may buy one. The lock bar issue isn't a problem for me, at least it's jamming over to the side that locks it in place. I think the knife is small enough that I would remove the clip and just drop it in my pocket. You said it's cutting performance was good so if I can get it for 20 bucks I think its a keeper.
Agree
It's a nice desk knife/office knife, want to open letters and cut paper, open packages, its great!......want to bushcraft like Gideon, its crap because its absurd to think itd even amount well to that stuff. Get one, youll like it. Its not perfect, but its not bad
@@townes_ It looks relatively harmless, which is a good thing. Meanwhile it has a nice thin blade with good cutting ability.
I understand your concerns for an outdoor knife, but it looks great for an office knife. And $25 on knife center for knife, tax and shipping, can’t really beat that. Just ordered one. I will update with my impressions after I receive the knife.
I’ve had it over 3 months now, and it is a keeper. Great little knife for everyday use in an office environment. Small, not intimidating to other people, scary sharp. The blade is great, D2 so easy to touch up. Construction is very light like you said, would not cross my mind to use it for anything other than slicing, but for that, it’s great. The protruding liner lock is weird, but I don’t really mind to be honest. The micarta is cheap, the clip is huge, probably too big. But it’s a great little knife for $25. I have seen so many crappy one for more expensive than this one.
Also, I have couple ideas for mods that I think will make it awesome!
I do not regret and recommend it, as long as you know what you’re getting (I.e. not an ESEE 5, nor a Paramilitary 2, but a good little office friendly cutting instrument).
Salut !
Well, at least the goofy lock matches the clip and fit.
I’m just going to tell myself that they produced this knife as a troll lol
Haha 😂
I got some good use out of my ESEE 5 while camping last weekend. I did some batoning and split some firewood and it split like a champ and held an awesome edge the whole time.
I just bought a 5 from TKC but haven’t used it yet. What a beast! I don’t see how you could break it. Heavier than I’m used to though. Glad to hear it still kept its edge after pounding on it.
@@E.L.RipleyAtNostromo yeah it weighs one pound 😂 I’ve had mine for months and didn’t use it any until last weekend. It stayed in my bug out bag pretty much until then, but I was very pleased with its performance.
I have the ease 6 and wish I had bought the 5. The 6 is a great last ditch only got one knife, but I have a bunch of knives both fixed and folders. I tend to carry the 5” army
@@larryfath2673 well, I’d want both. I’ve read that for all around camp chores, slicing as well as a hunting knife, the 6 outperforms the 5 because of its longer, thinner blade and lighter weight. The 5 though is a brute for wood processing and other tasks where you need a super heavy duty blade. Check out The Knife Connection where you can build an ESEE 5 with your own scale choice, with or without sheath to save $.
@@larryfath2673 a longer blade would have come in handy a couple of times for me but I love that 1/4 inch blade stock.
Hi , This is Mike Perrin with ESEE. None of the Churp folders I have seen have the problem with any "loose" tolerances. All of the ones I have seen, handled have excellent fit and finish. I have carried the production prototype of this knife for 6 months and it has never failed, never been sharpened and I have use dit really hard. The liner lock 'hump' is everyone's personal preference but it doesn't get in my way.
As far as the problem with "contract ts" or whatever you heard about ESEEnoyt knowing that BRK was going to release it, that is all not true. We designed it and sent the design to BRK knowing they would release it. That's the intention and nothing misunderstood anywhere.
If you have a CHurp that has problems with the fit or finish I strongly suggest you contact Blue Ridge and see if you can get an exchange rather than make a blanket statement that the whole production run is bad.)
Mike
Yeah, I think this might be a bad one. The ones I have seen and worked with are still holding up great!
I'm interested in ESEE Churp and I'm wondering if we can open it with one hand by engaging the liner lock with our index finger and then flicking the blade out?
You can open and close it with one hand. Should not be a problem! 👌👌
Just aesthetically, the pocket clip makes it a hard no. Ruins an otherwise nice looking knife.
I could see just removing it.
Crkt squid clip fits perfect, and makes it deep carry.
Wow, thanks. How do you screw that up? For budget and sharp in that price range and that configuration in both AUS-8 and D2 it’s hard to beat the Ontario RAT 1. I have three of them and they’re an amazing value. The Victorinox Forester / German Army SAK would be a good one here as well.
I love my ESEE fixed blades, but they’re just filling a product line niche here with junk. Thanks for the honest opinion!
Since when do you use a liner lock to do woodcrafting meant for a fixed blade
You could modify the liner lock and lower it down with the file I’m sure but you shouldn’t have to do that with a new knife
That’s what I was thinking. It’s an attractive design.
Great video! Love your take on gear. Itd be cool to see you do more videos in the style of knife. They seem to be becoming more popular.
Years ago I would’ve said, “hey, what do you want for 20 bucks” but now there are some knives out there that are actually not bad for 20 bucks. But in its defense, this is not a hard use folder. More like a fruit cutter and a package opener.
I actually like mine. Blade is still centered. I don’t use it as a hard user, but as a cheap edc…it’s fine. Legal in most states as a two hand opener and a shorter blade. Weird that it’s in bearings tbh. The liner lock is that way so it’s easy with gloves on. Had to blue lock tight the clip too. Does well slicing and doing edc stuff though.
Still on my list. I've seen someone else swap out washer to tighten it up. Let's all keep in mind, this is about as light duty as you're gonna get and the materials are decent. If anything it's a novelty to add to your collection.
I might've grabbed it if it was made in the US, just to support the company. But this low quality Chinese-made stuff being pushed out by former American companies is getting tiresome.
@@Arto257 absolutely valid opinion
I was just about to purchase one 😂 wanted to see a review before hitting that purchase button... well, you've ever steered me wrong, so nvr mnd
Mine is great. Rock solid. I think you might want to get a new one. Thanks for sharing.
I was wondering if the feather sticking & mat and tube cutting might have loosened up the pivot area - there is a lot of washer or races space at the pivot point. It was good to see the ill-named "Churp" survive such hard use in the tests, but honestly the toughest work mine will ever see is disjointing fried chicken wings from overseas street vendors - and opening Amazon shipping cartons.
Definitely not a hard use knife here..taking it into the woods and beating it like a survival knife is not realistic for this size knife..I’ll be getting one and reviewing it based on realistic uses in the future..no batoning 😆
As soon as I seen this knife, I knew that liner lock protrusion would get in the way! Thanks for reviewing this.
Hard wood cuts? It is an office knife to open a box once a day. It feels like a small pebble in the hand and unnoticable in the pocket.
Would love to see more retro reviews. Hopefully with better results
I have one (just like you, curious as heck about this duck-billed platypus of a knife and pretty certain it was an experimental prototype that BRK decided to just push into production much to the surprise of Esee) and hate the liner-lock release crescent sticking up into the air. I think I'm going to grind mine flat, flush to the handle. I won't complain about having to dig my finger nail into the slot to release the liner lock. THIS HAS ONE CURRENT ADVANTAGE FOR ME: with the nail nick it makes my overseas vacation destination much happier than blades that "fly out" of the handle (all the rage in most modern knife designs, except classic "slow roll" Cold Steel TriAds) and thereby look very "weapon'y" to the local LEOs. The shape and blade shape and blade length are so sheeple friendly, yet comes with such great steel and tight tolerances versus, say, the classic Gerber LST. This has displaced the CRJB Ria for me. OH: for a safer liner lock lock-up, it pays to "flip" the blade open the last part so the liner lock edge snaps in place. Not in front of potentially critical eyes of course.
Man, I had some hopes that maybe this would be a good one. Great review!
Ya a I would rather just use a Swiss army
The title of this video made me think I was having a stroke
Hahah
Bummer. Could’ve been great. Thanks for your integrity brother.
For the price it is a good little slicer with good materials
Well, you really can't tell how a knife will perform until you use it yourself. However, it just looks like it sucks.
Edit: I do love Esee though!
First thing I did with mine was remove that hideous clip. Makes a decent back-up (in)pocket knife.
Nice shape for a little slip joint but that linerlock put me off before I watched this review.
Make it a lockback and drop the pocket clip and you have a good pocket knife.
...or slip joint. But i like your style
Where are all the bargain priced lockbacks? Only Buck seems to churn them out. I've heard lockbacks require more exacting machining than liner locks, but the real reason, I think, is that liner locks lend themselves well to open-back handle designs, not to mention the fidget factor in learning how to "snap open" liner locks - lockbacks seem harder to snap open.
@@townes_
Yes a slip joint would be good for people that can't have locking knives, a lot of potential sales if they did it.
I saw the chirp on knife centers RUclips when it came out. Honestly as soon as I saw it, I thought to myself... Mmm nope.
That liner lock looks like it gets in the way, crazy pocket clip. Looks flimsy.. idk, something in me wanted to like it because it's different, and it's "Esse", but I just don't.
Damn im sorry to hear this about anything Esee. I definitely take your opinion in high regard and really appreciate your honesty.
I wish it was a lock back design
Thanks for the great review on the churp! Made some great points. Very nice 👍. Keep safe!
Hey Aaron and family , have your reviewed the Acta Non verba fix blades yet ?
Blade and pocket clip both arrived loose. I like the design but brk did not do their part on this one.
My pocket clip was loose too! But the blade solid.
Just file down locker and file it round. NO need at all all that steel. Looks better also.
Had it been a back lock it would have been a great blade. I'd like to hear your thoughts on the new Case flippers.
Looks like a great first knife for a youth… And $20? What is your problem? Lol
FWIW the crkt squid pocket clip works perfect on this knife. Plus it makes it deep carry.
As always thank you for a great vid, they should have just made it a slipjoint. I wish the would do a zancudo liner lock with g10 on both sides
CHURP? More like CHUMP!!
Any chance of closing the blade on yourself when using the blade to strike a ferro rod? Maybe just an added level of awareness when doing this.
Thankfully ESEE went with Blue Ridge. I saw the title and thumbnail of your video and thought for a second Bark River was involved 🤮
I was worried about the same thing!
Thanks for the review! For that kind of price, i would much rather stick with a Rat 2 for a similar blade shape and higher quality construction.
Perfect for my lunchbox , it’s not meant to be a bushcraft knife
Hmm. You said what I was thinking as I watched... Should have been a lock back and clip is too large.
I've seen Walmart knives better built than this. Disappointing.
Thank you for the review. It is perfect. Might do a few minor mods. Definitely getting one.
so... does it have the esee warrenty ?
Cool knife. I’d like to pair that with my esse 4 just cause why not. Defiantly cool idea.I like the green handles. Thanks for the great review. Have a good day to all.
G'day Aaron, well that's pretty uninspiring mate, cant win 'em all I s'pose. At first, I thought that lock was a folding spoon or some such. Surprised ESEE had anything to do with it to be honest.
Cheers Duke.
It looks like a flop! And I hate that hubungous pocket clip! Would you… or have you done a review of an Emerson Kershaw design?
Liner locks suck! Make it a lock back and I'll buy two.
Looks cheap; hard to believe this is an ESEE. Thanks for the review.
Stick with the kabar dozier in d2
The Churp slides under some length restrictions and "opener" (thumb hole/stud/flipper) limitations in some places.
for that price, with esee, you can just get yourself the avispa and enjoy a much better knife design... this is really a flop
Is the Avispa like a as Rat with a spear point?
I think the 3" Zancudo is closer in size. I love both the Avispa and Zancudo, awesome and awesome prices. Almost match the bang-for-buck of the Kabar Dozier Folding Hunter.
@@germanicus5066 and frame lock insted of liner lock
@@DeadCanto dang. I hate frame locks. Unless they have a lefty friendly version.
@@mdubb4855 I had a dozier a few years ago and it fell apart. The Rat 2 is my go to. But I’d love it in a spear point.
Every good company messes up at some point.Just look at spyderco, making knives with dog tails now.
Thanks for the review Aaron. It's a shame bcoz I kinda like the design of this knife :(
You got like 2:30 minutes before you mentioned your big hands
And that’s a stretch 🤣
small knife. giant clip. only for right handers. looks like a US eclectrician knife combined with ESEE an SAK. i am not in love.
Are you using a GoPro?
For some shots
It does kinda look like a Swiss army knife LOL. It looks like a Swiss army knife on steroids 💉.....😕.
You realize that’s a pocket knife right it’s not ment for bushcraft it’s a light duty office style knife. Just cause it says esee don’t mean it’s a survival knife lol. I mean no disrespect I love your videos but I think you don’t understand the intended purpose for this style knife.
Swiiiing and a miss, lol I wonder how thick that Lockhart is if it'd be at all possible to grind some of the protrusion away and maybe make a valley for your finger to rest in using a dremel tool 🤔🤷♂️ but then again this lil guy may not hold up long enough to be worth the effort if the pivot is as loose as you say... ehhh for $25 it might be worth tinkering on to see if you can improve the execution of an otherwise great design 👍 to esse 👎to BRK
Oooo it can cut a plastic bottle!
Yep, that's a pile 💩.
I love this knife.
Not a fan of Esse. They are a dishonest company. They stole G10 handle designs from The Knife Connection and then tried to excuse it by claiming 'hands are all pretty much the same'. A little ironic since they have been making flat micarta scales for years. Then they 'came up' with G10 designs that are nearly - if not completely - identical.
If I were esee I’d be pissed…
Looks nice
Did I see China on the blade so it’s not made in USA 🇺🇸 and not at ESEE but by some other company
Esee made a dud. It happens to everyone. We all have bad days.
Is this a paid review? Did they actually pay to get their product trashed?
Um what? No
that linear lock is trash...grind that thing down! a lockback would have been legit
This knife is a huge fail
Esee just needs to stick to fixed blades…
It's called corporate greed. Just like KFC going into the burger business or Pizza Hut going into the taco business. Keep producing epic fixed blades ESEE, stop trying to dip into the folder realms. They always end up being mediocre imported folders, this one being Chinese junk.
@@doejon9424 so wanting to expand your product line is corporate greed? Yeah okay
@@hunterglaspell5580 Yes. Absolutely. Expanding your product line (when you specifically specialize in something) is for pure profit, i.e corporate greed. ESEE is known for fixed blades. Not Chinese Manufactured folders.. it's greed for $$. Like KFC (a place known for fried chicken) selling hamburgers. Or Pizza Hut (a place known for pizza pies) selling tacos or orange chicken & fried rice. Expanding your product line is not trying to compete with small budget folders when *You specialize* in outdoor / survival fixed blades.. it's absolutely cooperate greed. And there is now a huge market for "Chinese Msnufactured" knives with premium steels because of companies like Kizer, We & Kershaw (most Kershaw's are now outsourced to China now - very few USA made models nowadays) for example. It's really bad because companies will continue to outsource knives to China like that if people don't stop buying Chinese manufactured. CORPORATE GREED. YES. I stand behind my original statement.
I just want a thinner blade stock Izula -2
@@jackwagonhoedown4114 Yeah. That would be nice for EDC. A thinner, full flat grind Izula II. I've seen online, near mirror polished custom Izula's that have been shaved down on each side like you say
Algorithm comment
#blueridgeknives #eseeknives HARD PASS!
Ahh! First complete failed ESEE design. Plus it's frigging Chinese Manufactured!! Come on now ESEE. Don't allow your name to be tainted with Chinese junk !
Yep not good
@@gideonstactical Shame too, I had high hopes because, well, usually a new ESEE is exciting & purposely made through trial & error. Seems like they tried to throw in some reto "Camillus Scout Knife" type liner lock button too. I have my vintage Camillus Scout knife with that type of brass lock that says "Push". I really think if they make a folder.. since they don't want to stay exclusively in the fixed blade realm.. they should make a Izula II folder or ESEE 3/4 folder.. same blade profile & handle ergonomics.. just in a foldable platform. Even as a collaboration or sold design.. this thing a $24 letter opener with D2 : (.
When I saw made in China figured
OMG!!!!!
That is 1 ugly knife.
Pathetic review dude. Just like you are complaining about the size. I mean the name is self explanatory. Just saying
waiting hundreds of seconds just to hear some vague rambling about no specific thing that your title made me thing is HORRIBLE. get to the point in 20 seconds or less what's bad.
It’s definitely ugly
Piece of garbage. So much options out there for 20 bucks
