Ah yes, ‘perfect on paper,’ coming from a Sony user-where every ‘advanced’ video mode comes with a side of heavy crop and the cinematic charm of a wobbling jelly. Truly inspiring standards you have there!
8:28 "This should be a scroll wheel" Agree to disagree. If you hold the camera, your fingers fall such that scroll wheels should sit near the top. I much prefer the Nikon way of pressing a button while rotating the wheel to access another parameter like ISO, compared to having to move your thumb down. It just feels slower. With that in mind, I notice that many Sony cameras don't even have any function buttons on the front. So for me, I'd point to that area and say, "there should be a few function buttons". :) 10:25 What I will also say is that saying that 24MP is enough for social media is... sorry, but it's a bit ridiculous. Something like 2MP is enough for social media. If you don't want to inspect details on that photo you're hanging on the wall, 24MP is probably more than enough for that too.
He also failed to mention that the screen on the Z 6III is a touchscreen and you don’t even have to scroll that much to get to where you want in the menu. Overall I felt the entire video was a joke and don’t in bad faith.
11:07 - 100% agreed. I TOTALLY understand users when they switch from their Canon or Sony mirrorless camera to the Nikon Z cameras, specifically the Z6 and Z7 competitors. The autofocus is definitely not as snappier from what people have told me and it just takes a 'bit' more effort to really get the shots you really want. I've had many photography friends ask me why I haven't switched (lol) and as you said in the video, having the NIkon system is more than enough for what I do. Plus, it would suck selling all of my Nikon lenses just to switch to another system that my audiences would not know if it was shot with Nikon, Sony, Fuji, or Canon. Excellent video!
It would be nice if camera manufacturers gave a choice on rear screen types. Both systems are great but I’d choose a simple tilt over a fully articulated.
It is, but I’d argue that it competes in the same market. The A7RV is older tech and roughly the same price now. So if you are a person looking to buy a camera around $2500, they compare perfectly fine
Older tech? It is the first of the ‘new tech’ with flippy up, down, up, down screen and the second focus chip. MPB has 2999 - 3149. Nikon discounts the Z8 to 3100. Sure, you may be lucky to find an eBay at 2500, but that isn’t regular. Either way, they are all great cameras
I think these cameras are quite comparable in today’s market! I know the Sony was more expensive when it came out, but new tech is available in the Z6iii and the A7RV is much cheaper now.
Honestly all this “Sony shooters” rushing to test out Nikon cameras for the purpose of getting views and attention without properly understanding the camera or system is sometime mind boggling. I have used many Sony cameras and moved on to Nikon and I can for sure say I prefer using a Nikon camera (Z 8 and Z 6III) way more than I enjoyed using a Sony. This video was a joke in my own opinion. What was the objective of this video? Just because you don’t understand the system doesn’t make it bad but maybe it’s your fault for not making good use of your time with the camera or it’s not the system for you.
The point of the video is just to share my experience when I rented the Z6iii. It’s not as nefarious as you make it out to be ha. If you want to see me praise a Nikon camera, go watch my ZF video. Giving critiques doesn’t mean the camera is bad, it just means I didn’t like those things.
Best comment so far…he did the same with the Z8 review…not even a review but more of a chance to use his platform to put his beloved Sony on a pedestal while diplomatically bashing Nikon. If you like Sony, then just shoot Sony. No need to compare. I like Canon and Nikon but I never. Bash Sony. I do bash Sony users who feel the need to beat their chest and talk about other brands in the comments and in their videos. These are tools that we use to perform a craft and if that tool works for you, use it. If not, move on. End of story. One last thing…I have been in the game for 18 yrs so far and all the advancements in the industry have made people think that anyone can be a photographer. You can have the perfect camera with the perfect auto focus and perfect colors but if you don’t have the skill set which is personality when dealing with people at events or the knowledge of where to be and the knowledge of lighting and composition, then you are just a computer operator.
@ no one needs to see you praise anything…the fact that you shoot one brand and have a familiarity with it and then rent something and then bash it because it doesn’t work like what you have speaks more about you than it does the product. If this is how you choose to do your thing though, do it. It is making your Sony fans happy in the end and that is what I take from this video and you. I am a Canon and Nikon fan but have nothing against Sony until I see videos like this. Kinda makes it hard to like the brand when people always feel the need to compare to make the brand look better. But, again I say do you. Happy Holidays
I'd have to agree I think there is way more hidden bias going on in some of these comparisons, maybe from lack of product knowledge. I am admittedly a Nikon fanboi, but I use all kinds of cams for work. Nikon was behind in video features until the Z9, Z8 and Z6iii but have caught up at this point, and surpassed many if we are being objective. I also own an S5iix, and shoot with FX3's for work occasionally. They all perform very well, Sony having the slight edge on autofocus, size/weight, and a big edge in higher base ISO's for better low-light (12800 base IS amazing). The Z8 has far better codec options allowing it to be used for many different applications, but in all honesty... I much prefer the footage of the S5iix over all of them, despite it having the "worst" focus of them all, and being pretty comparable to the Z8 for low-light. There is something about Vlog and the focus pulling on the Lumix kills Sony/Nikon/Canon. N-RAW is actually pretty amazing if you grade it without Nikons trash LUTS, RED's are better. N-Log and S-Log I find to be comparable when exposed correctly. In other words, these are all perfectly usable cameras if you know how to use a camera, and almost everything is a nit-pick at this point, unless its simply user-preference. But the Z6iii and Z8 destroy them all as hybrids.
@@connormccaskill Well this Z 6III video just felt like you had a serious beef with Nikon because the entire video was more about finding non-issues than even saying what you like about it. The Sony camera you used to compare with the Z 6III costs over 5k and yet beyond the 61 megapixels resolution, I don’t see anything that camera beats the Nikon on. The A7RV got an unusable 8K with the worse rolling shutter. When it comes to autofocus I have not had any issues with the camera as I shoot a lot of events plus run and gun in lowlight with no issues. Like I stated earlier, take your time to understand how the Nikon system works and you will surely see that all the hate is just unnecessary.
Yeah really depends on how much you are invested into a system, both with lenses and what you learned on. The fact that the Nikon Z6iii has better video quality at higher frame rates and also has more frame rates, and also holds its own against the Sony A7R V at almost HALF the price is Awesome! A person could get the Z6iii with 3 prime lenses for just the price of the A7RV. Nice video, I like to see other comparisons as I also have Sony, Canon and Nikon.
Except the auto focus that you can’t rely on compared to the Sony, have you ever used Nikon cameras and use them other than in manual mode shooting wildlife? I’ll stick to my Sony.
Finally a real review and not a fan boy review...no one talks about the spongy buttons and the bad menu. Did you try the Z8? Like to see how you feel it compares...
Did enjoy your video! Your reasoning is quite plausible ... I did switch from Sony to Nikon though however I am a wildlife shooter primarily. The Z6iii is blowing the alpha 7 series out of the water in terms of frame rate and I enjoy having 20fps raw vs. 10fps in the Sonys. Sure, Sony is offering a9iii and a1ii but this is for dentists and lawyers :)
Yeah these newer Sony cameras are way too expensive. I definitely approach my videos from a videographer perspective. I’ve heard a lot of hardcore photographers prefer Nikon rn
As a nikon user who actually upgraded from the Z6ii to the Z6iii, I am on board with what you're saying here. The mush could get a bit less and the menus are not the most intuitive. Amazing camera for the price but nothing to make people switch from other brands but a good upgrade if you are already in the nikon space. The Nikon-RED LUTs are pretty cool tho!
Brace yourself, Nikon stans incoming.... But seriously, I think you've made great points in the video. When I bought a Z30, I was scrathing my head at what Nikon users were talking about regarding the menu being so much better than Sony's. It's not bad, but it seems more like a menu you'd only think is good once you're used to it, and it's certainly not leagues above Sony's. In contrast, Canon's menu was really intuitive even as a new user. That said Nikon's quick menu is stellar. I personally think the lack of third control wheel is a design choice (I could be wrong though), and I'd really love if Nikon started including one. Also it's a very small nitpick, but rotating anti-clockwise to lock the lens into the mount is very unintuitive, I wish Nikon changed this when they were designing the Z mount. The video specs, IBIS, AF, chunky body all seem fire on the Z6III though, and if I were picking today I'd probably get the Z6III for the $2500 ish range.
Fair enough, as a Z6 and Z6 iii owner I never had any issues with the buttons as you have described. I agree the Sony fit screen is where everyone needs to go. There is something about the feel of Nikon's bodies. Sony's bodies seem to feel like they were designed in the USSR still. Maybe the next gen they will hire someone else. Z6iii AF is revelation compared to Expeed 6 Nikons but they really need to bring back the tracking box in Area AF modes for when it can't is a PITA to have to switch to the amazing 3D AF to get a tracking box.
Stabilization has different modes... I always heard that Nikon has better stability than other brands, specially with wild life. Maybe try the sport mode stabilizing. You're comparing cameras that are targeting different audiences at different price point. you should compare maybe with the A7IV.
@ I never tested video stabilization but I was so curious that I tested this on my z9 and it behaved the way described. Meaning no harsh movement in sport mode while I was able to replicate the issue in normal mode. My guess is in sports you need to follow targets panning and it helps this kind of camera movement.
As Nikon suggest , if you shoot are not moving camera on pan level then use normal mode, but camera is moving at pan level then sports mode is suitable.. as in normal mode stabilization mechanism is forced to move in center that creates a jitter ,
@@connormccaskillJan Wegener said that for wildlife video, it’s the best stabilisation out there. Use case is soooo important. That would be my critique on this video: when you make general statements saying something isn’t as good, that applies to your use case. But really not necessarily to other cases. And the opposite might be true there.
Did I miss the part about rolling shutter? Or the shooting speeds? Or the fact Nikon doesn’t cripple that speed with 3rd party lenses? You must have gone to the Northrup School of RUclips.
@@connormccaskill You didn't need to test the fact Sony cripples 3rd party lenses and a simple wave of the camera will show the horrible Sony rolling shutter. Are Sony cameras so boring that you have to nitpick a Nikon camera to get views? Sony "fanboys" should be happy with their gear and leave other manufacturers alone.
The third party lens cripple of 15fps only applies to a1 and a9 users. How is he supposed to talk about it if his primary focus is video or taking photos with the a7RV which only shoots at 10fps? By the way, the a1 and a1II only shoot at 20fps if you want to shoot at focus priority. The a9 and a9II would only shoot 12fps for lossless formats. If you check the prices of Tamron lenses made for Z mount, they are noticeably more expensive than the E mount. The Nikon tax is more real.
@ all Sony cameras are slower with 3rd party lenses. The ones that shoot 10fps are only at 5-7 for at best with 3rd party lenses. E mount is way past its prime. And the whole point is, if you’re a Sony shooter why do you have to use Nikon or Canon to justify your Sony cameras? Sony cameras do the job but they are lifeless machines. Sony shooters know this and constantly have to find things wrong with the competition to make themselves feel better.
@@JET-Photo what's lifeless is your photography skills so don't blame the machine. There's no such thing as artificially slowing down to 5-7fps. Sony camera by default are set at a balance between focus and release priority. Therefore it will not take the shot if the focusing element isn't shifted to the right place yet. If you set it to release priority it will always shoot at 10fps. Nikon was an innovative brand decades ago. However, for nearly 40 years it has been copying Canon and then Sony, stealing the results of others. Nikon fans are even more toxic. Thanks to the internet we can still find the absurd words of Nikon fans from early 2000. Nikon fanboys have dismissed every innocations from leaving the film header out, a function not available until the F6, to image stabilization, CMOS sensors (Nikon used to use inferior CCD technology), full frame sensors (until the "D3 moment"), sensor stabilization, flip out screens, swivel screens, EVF, USB charging, mirrorless cameras, dual card slots (during the Z6/Z7 era), third party lenses (until the deal with Tamron), and the list goes on. Imagine if Nikon and Nikon fanboys got their ways. Cameras would suck.
I dont know why every manufacturer does not include a screen like you showed us on that Sony. Its not a major technical thing - just go to the manufacturer that makes the Sony ones and order some!
Ive been reslly interested in this camera, so thanks for going in depth! It seems so close to what i want, but i think youre right in it being a good indication of whats to COME. Might be worth waiting The buttons need to change too, + scroll wheel lol
Don’t listen to this guy man, he’s on the Sony payroll. Rent the Z63 and you will fall in love with it. It’s the most pleasurable camera I’ve ever used in my life. And I own six Sony cameras. I don’t know what the hell Connor is talking about the tactile feet of the buttons. They’re perfect, and the menu is fantastic too, he’s just used to Sony menus. He barely spoke about the most important thing of the camera, which is the glorious colors and beautiful organic image out of it, their rivals are red camera
Hahahahaha. I don't even know how to respond to you bro. I wish Sony would pay me, but they don't. Legally I would have to disclose that. It's all personal preference. If you love how the buttons feel, that's epic. I don't. If you like the menus, rad. I don't. I still like Nikon, this just ain't it for me. Renting it for yourself (what I did for this video) is always the best idea. Also, I should've noted that the Z6iii N-RAW was a bit noisy compared to the Z8. Happy Holidays man.
You mentioned Sony bodies needing a redesign… well that’s what they’ve done with the a9iii and a1ii. I’ve heard rave reviews about the new grip design. Hopefully it’ll be implemented on all the other bodies too. Definitely a Sony shooter who is super interested in Nikon right now though! I don’t think I’m gonna jump ship, but if Sony really messes up on the a7V I’ll be tempted!
I had an A7R2 and moved over to Nikon (first Z6, then Z8). Nikon just "reads my mind" better. Another advantage of Nikon is the _much_ bigger flange. That bodes well for lens design. Nikon just doesn't have to work around the narrow throat issues that Sony has to work around. If I could change anything about Z8, I'd make it smaller and lighter. Not as small as Sony perhaps, just a touch smaller. Also the auto WB leaves a lot of imaging performance on the table, but then that is true of A7 too. I find that most of the time I either have to set specific WB (e.g. sunlight in sunlight), or better yet, calibrate using a target. Somehow Z6 nailed auto WB much better than Z8.
Nikon has the best and most intuitive menus, if you know exactly what you need. You don't have to use D-Pad only, you can use both control dials and touchscreen to navigate. And of course you can go one step to the left and scroll through the groups of settings. Kudos to Sony for autofocus performance but when Nikon produced cameras and other photo equipment Sony didn't even exist…
Returned mine within a couple of days and picked up a ZF, much happier. I was hoping the evf on the Z6 iii was going to be comparable to the z8 but nowhere close. Felt cheap in the hand to me honestly and not worth the money.
I assume this is all about marketing. Anyone serious about video work...look at the fellow behind Conner at 2:17. That's what you get...not hybrid cameras. Maybe a Sony FX6 ... or FX 9. Both of those will crush any hybrid system....especially when it coms to controls.
What do you mean by marketing exactly? I’m not affiliated with the brands if that’s what you mean. Just a camera nerd. Comparing these hybrid cameras to an fx6 or fx9 seems a bit off don’t you think? You can be “serious” about video work with an iPhone so I don’t track what you are implying
@@connormccaskill I think folks that are video centric should steer clear of hybrids. The Sony FX 6-9 gives so much more than a top level hybrid. I am a still photographer so am happy with my Sony A7RIV...but if I switched to mainly video, i would go buy a Sony Camcorder pronto.
you will know the age of the photographer depending on what brand of camera they use. newer gens use sony while the older guys from nineties bellow, most of them love their nikon.
Here, have a brick (sony) Tipical sony shooter, overcrying about things they are NOT USED TO with their sony sistem. Guess what boys? As a Nikon shooter, I cant stand Sony menu, scrol wheel menu, zooming into the taken shots, grip and more....Just take in mind, nikon iz 4 years BEHIND sony MILC sistem and its not that much behind as you would like for sony to be better.
Ergonomics is SONY Achilles heel.
Its also its claim to fame as the smallest of the top 3 camera brands.
So it will NEVER be solved.
They really are obsessed with having small cameras. I don’t agree with their philosophy
@@connormccaskill Me too.
Especially difficult to use with big lens
BUT
its their way to enter the market, and the results prove them right.
Might be worth waiting
The buttons need to change too, + scroll wheel lol
Totally agree, the button layout needs some work, but the direction Nikon is going in is really exciting! What would be your perfect Nikon camera?
Yeah, I really need to test those cameras, but they are just sooo expensive
I think the ZF is Nikon’s best camera rn! I own one too
You are right I don't shoot 8K either. I shoot only 12K but Black Magic will soon release 17K camera and 12K will be obsolete for me.
So many Ks… haha the 12k is a dope camera. Just filmed with it recently, although I don’t love how large it is personally
"Sony user": prohibited from putting their eye to the EVF, only allowed to use the LCD.
Personally not a fan of camcorders but I hear you
After flip screen statement I stopped the video..
you will know the age of the photographer depending on what brand of camera they use. newer gens use sony while the older guys from nineties bellow, most of them love their nikon.
Nikon WANTS YOU to think, sony is FOOL PROOF. Let that sinc in ...In the end, they are just tools.
What a bull 💩🤣
Thank you
@connormccaskill don't get me wrong... I am just saying that is no other perfect camera, perfect only the one that we are using....
sony is thrash wkwk compared to nikon and canon, Nikon Z its for Gen Z like us,, oldies people just play with you marketing sony wkwk
Don’t believe the beard, I’m gen z as well lol. If you love Nikon cameras, that’s awesome 👏 I just had my opinions and shared them.
@@connormccaskill yes, please make more video about nikon camera
