  • While some complain that extracting natural gas from shale rock formations is tainting their water supply, others who have allowed drilling on their property are getting wealthy. Lesley Stahl reports.

Six years later, and this story was critical to helping everyone (who wasn't directly experiencing it) understand what was going on in our North Texas communities and inside neighborhoods and close to homes all across America. Thank you, CBS. Journalism works. Listen carefully to Mr. McClendon. He had all the answers. Or so it seemed.

This 60 Minutes story was filmed in November 2010. Shale gas extraction using hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling wasn't viable until 2002. This story is excellent, by the way.

Unlocking gas molecules trapped in hard rock (fracking), could unleash so much gas across the world that it will solve the energy crisis for the next century as well as help reduce carbon emissions

I would absolutely choose B. Suffer from some bad smells on ocassion, and have an obstructed view on one side of my house, for the trade off of becoming very well off without having to work. Personally, I would still work, and invest the extra income. Then in 10 to 15 years, I'd sell the property and move to Palm Beach. What people like Leslie Stahl have zero connection with, is that outside of her gated community, most people suffer bad smells and obstructed views anyway.

With anything there are some inherent risks. With proper regulation and ethical supervision fracking and drilling can be no more dangerous to a community that building a large gas station or an oil refinery (probably much safer than an oil refinery). What has happened to these people as a result of fracking incidents is awful and is a perfect example of under regulation, however the benefits outweigh the costs tremendously when proper regulations and level-headed judgement are implemented in how these things are carried out.

The folks in Ohio are waking up to the dangers of hydraulic fracturing. They are seeing earthquakes triggered by waste water injection & instituting stricter regulations. Not only does fracking endanger the water supply, expose residence to toxic chemicals & trigger seismic events, it also takes millions of gallons of water out of the ecosystem. The folks of SW PA are also dealing with this. Learn more in this Stream of Conscience interview with David Brown: ruclips.net/video/Di_827l_s7M/видео.html.

Chesapeake has delayed or refused to complete other purchases in that region as well, the lawsuit states.
“Chesapeake has convinced numerous leasehold owners in Michigan to sell leases to Chesapeake instead of other prospective purchasers, and then manufactured alleged title defects or other alleged justification not to close the agreements after discovering negative information concerning the zones within the Collingwood range,” according to the lawsuit.

I think shale gas is a GOOD solution for the ever increasing energy demand. It is in comparison with oil and coal environmental friendly as its emission of greenhouse gasses per unit of energy is less. Moreover it contributes to increased employment, which I think is quite important . Let me know your opinion about shale gas!

I understand your point of view, but just think about the fact that it costs a lot of energy to build a windmill. I think this is not possible without conventional energy sources like gas and oil. I am sure that there are plastic elements in windmills and in solar panels, and plastic is made from oil. What do you think about that?

So, my takeaway is that one guy says he can live without natural gas in an extremely impoverished community and a environmental advocate agrees that shale gas is the future and that we just need to regulate it. Shale gas is cleaner than a lot of things and one thing I bet you didn't know is that those wind turbines are actually fueled by fossil fuels as well!

@Costerguy1234556 Actually the batteries in the Nissan Leaf, Chevy Volt and Ford Focus Electric are good for 100K miles. That's not bad and the technology will improve fast.
We gave $39 Billion in oil subsitys during a time of record profits. That much money is enough to build 46 thousand megawatts of wind energy.

The husband and wife in this video who are complaining about the drilling should put more consideration into their trade-offs. A. Be poor, and struggle to feed our daughter, but have clean, open land in all directions. B. Be rich, without even working, send our daughter to college without loans, and never have to worry about money again, simply for giving up the open land view on one side of our house, and occasionally suffering some bad smells and smoke.

@THEBIUEMUPPET Yes shale gas is easy to do but it has a low net energy gain that is the big con of shale gas.
Shale Oil has about no net energy gain at all.

@Costerguy1234556 But shale gas from fracking has a very low net energy gain. That means alot of energy goes into extracting it. This means that this kind of gas is not clean at all, its almost as bad as coal because the average fracking well needs 1000 trucks.

    • @andrewwaltrip8552

As a petroleum engineer that has to be the dumbest comment. The process is safe as long as the casing and cement job is done well. Also Coal is the most harmful of the energy players while natural gas is the least and provides more energy than non-renewable energies. Even if something where to go wrong as in the video we can always redrill and place the proper care for that well.

there could be a affect depends on where the company is extracting the gas from the fracking water could leak into rivers or lakes if they re extracting it from areas like that which will lead into local drinking water affect citys or towns and the natural environment in the area there is a risk to it all seems to be that way woth everything we do these days

  • @Kane615

@MsZeitgeist85 Why so if it can replace oil sands why should we focus on something that is gonna be too expensive to extract in a few years? Electric cars are getting nowhere and have a lifespan of 2 years.

@MsZeitgeist85 mate they're is a huge difference between shale gas and shale oil and its one of the major [not fucking related] misconceptions that people make about Shale gas. Shale gas relatively easy to retrieve but is held back by misconceptions the fact that it takes time to drill and an army of green idealist. I see a future where solar power is the dominant source of energy. However that time is here yet and nor the technology and Shale gas is the perfect stepping stone for the 20 years.

In the context of my comment, "clean" refers to land unobstructed by a massive natural gas drilling site. (fyi, your second sentence isn't even in proper english). I think the benefits far outweigh the externalities. You should take a moment to look at how much land you are labeling "our own backyard." Also consider that if America doesn't stay competitive globally, we'll lose many of the privileges we have today. Should we continue with e-cars, despite the contamination from battery dispos
