    When Yeats wrote this in the 1890's, I wonder if he thought "maybe in a hundred years or so, someone will put it to music and song". Worth the wait.

      Yes, this is a deep and sacred thing -- not completely obvious in its implications -- but very potent. I love Yeats -- I love his call for the renewal of centre in The Second Coming -- and I see this vision of Sacred Tree as an empowerment principle.

      Also can be seen as relating to the two trees in the Garden of Eden; the Tree of Life with its limitless promise and the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil which, when eaten from in rebellion, brought death and cancelled the promise of the other tree, requiring a Savior. So from a Christian view, it is nothing less than the depiction of the Fall

      I pretty much agree with you, despite your mis-spelling of Yeats’ name. I’ve often cried to this version by Ms. McKennitt. She is such a profound melodist that she helps the words sneak in through the back door of our soul, and linger there, provoking a higher consciousness, if only for a few seconds, in which we begin to feel all time in one instant.

    Hello, from Israel. There is a lot of depth within this poem, and these lyrics are absolutely mystical. What a great voice, Loreena Mckennitt has. What a great divine angel. The musical arrangement reminds me, especially in the end, the concept of the spiraling movement of the Circle of Love (also, the circle of life), which William Butler Yeats, wrote in this poem:
    "There the Loves a circle go,
    The flaming Circle of our days,
    Gyring, spiring, to and fro,
    In those great Ignorance leafy ways"
    Yeats elaborated in his book A Vision a system in which geometrical figures are moving within two cones, interpenetrating each other, or intertwined in their movement within each other.
    These cones are also coined Gyres, and according to the system they control the course of human history, in frequent cycles, which were divided by Yeats to eras of the history of mankind. So, as a result, Yeats imbued in his poems, that symbol of the gyre, including another personal poem, which moved me very much: The Gift of Harun Al-Raschid. And of course, his famous poem, The Second Coming.

As for Yeats and Loreena McKennitt: They make me very emotional at times. Also, for the best... I have to admit that Yeats's poetry and artistic career, gave me personal insights, in regard to some symbolical connections in my past, but I cannot reveal which ones, because of privacy issues.

    When I hear this, I'm reminded of the Greek myth "Baucis and Philemon" about a couple who were transformed into two trees but joined at the trunk when it was their time to die. The gods had transformed themselves into peasant humans to visit a village but were treated badly by the townsfolk. The old couple welcomed them into their home and fed them. When the gods revealed their true identities, they told the couple they would destroy the town for their bad deeds but they would be spared because of their kindness and granted the couple a wish. Their wish was that when it was time to die, they would die together so one would not be left alone. So they died together but were transformed into two different trees (an oak and a cypress) with a single trunk.

      When William Butler Yeats wrote this beautiful poem he probably, was reminded of his own passage, taken from his Secret Rose story cycle, part of the story Of Costello the Proud, of Oona the Daughter
      , of Dermot and of the Bitter Tongue:
      The next day a fisherman found him lying among the reeds upon the lake
      shore, lying upon the white lake sand, and carried him to his own house. And the
      peasants lamented over him and sang the keen, and laid him in the Abbey on Insula
      Trinitatis with only the ruined altar between him and MacDermot’s daughter, and
      planted above them two ash-trees that in after days wove their branches together and
      mingled their leaves.

    Two trees; one is from China, one is from Britain. One is well versed in Celtic mysticism, is a teacher, knows languages, has travelled far and wide, gave his mind to students. The other knows not the mystic nature of her land, and its long traditions, it took a man from far away to teach her, she gave her heart and body to him. Both met, in an Arab land, and loved each other. Now apart.

    THE TWO TREES
    by: William Butler Yeats (1865-1939)
    ELOVED, gaze in thine own heart,
    The holy tree is growing there;
    From joy the holy branches start,
    And all the trembling flowers they bear.
    The changing colours of its fruit
    Have dowered the stars with merry light;
    The surety of its hidden root
    Has planted quiet in the night;
    The shaking of its leafy head
    Has given the waves their melody,
    And made my lips and music wed,
    Murmuring a wizard song for thee.
    There the Loves a circle go,
    The flaming circle of our days,
    Gyring, spiring to and fro
    In those great ignorant leafy ways;
    Remembering all that shaken hair
    And how the wingèd sandals dart,
    Thine eyes grow full of tender care:
    Beloved, gaze in thine own heart.
    Gaze no more in the bitter glass
    The demons, with their subtle guile,
    Lift up before us when they pass,
    Or only gaze a little while;
    For there a fatal image grows
    That the stormy night receives,
    Roots half hidden under snows,
    Broken boughs and blackened leaves.
    For all things turn to barrenness
    In the dim glass the demons hold,
    The glass of outer weariness,
    Made when God slept in times of old.
    There, through the broken branches, go
    The ravens of unresting thought;
    Flying, crying, to and fro,
    Cruel claw and hungry throat,
    Or else they stand and sniff the wind,
    And shake their ragged wings; alas!
    Thy tender eyes grow all unkind:
    Gaze no more in the bitter glass.

    De alegria nascem os galhos sagrados
    E todas as flores tremulas deles vem
    As distintas cores de seus frutos
    Presentearam as estrelas com maravilhosa luz
    A certeza de suas raízes escondidas
    Foram plantadas silenciosamente à noite
    O balanço de sua cabeça frondosa
    Deu as ondas suas melodias
    E uniu meus lábios com a música
    Murmurando uma canção mágica para ti
    Ali, o amor, um círculo criou
    O circulo flamejante de nossos dias
    Girando, balançando prá lá e pra cá
    Com seu jeito frondoso maravilhosamente ignorante
    Lembrando os cabelos esvoaçantes
    E como as sandálias aladas se movem
    Pequenos olhos crescem cheios de ternura
    Amado, olhe em seu coração
    Não olhe para o vidro amargo
    Demônios, com sua astúcia sutil
    Revelam-se enquando passamos
    Ou olhe apenas por um momento
    Pois uma imagem fatal avança
    A noite chuvosa recebe
    Raízes meio escondidas sob a neve
    Galhos quebrados e folhas escurecidas
    Pois todas as coisas acabam
    No vidro transparente os demonios aguardam.
    O vidro do cansaço longínquo
    Feito quando Deus dormiu em eras antigas
    Lá, através dos galhos quebrados, vão
    Os corvos de incansáveis pensamentos
    Voando, chorando, pra cá e pra lá
    Garra cruel e garganta faminta
    Ou então eles param, cheiram o vento
    E balançam suas assas esfarrapadas, ai de mim!
    Teus olhos ternos crescem com toda crueldade
    Não olhe mais para o vidro amargo
    Amado, olhe dentro de seu coração
    A árvore sagrada está crescendo
    De alegria nascem os galhos sagrados
    E todas as flores tremulas deles vem
    Lembrando os cabelos esvoaçantes
    E como as sandálias aladas se movem

    Beloved, gaze in thine own heart
    The holy tree is growing there;
    From joy the holy branches start
    And all the trembling flowers they bear.
    The changing colours of its fruit
    Have dowered the stars with merry light;
    The surety of its hidden root
    Has planted quiet in the night;
    The shaking of its leafy head
    Has given the waves their melody.
    And made my lips and music wed,
    Murmuring a wizard song for thee,
    There the Loves a circle go,
    The flaming circle of our days,
    Gyring, spiring to and fro
    In those great ignorant leafy ways;
    Remembering all that shaken hair
    And how the winged sandals dart
    Thine eyes grow full of tender care;
    Beloved, gaze in thine own heart.
    Gaze no more in the bitter glass
    The demons, with their subtle guile,
    Lift up before us when they pass,
    Or only gaze a little while;
    For there a fatal image grows
    That the stormy night receives,
    Roots half hidden under snows,
    Broken boughs and blackened leaves.
    For all things turn to bareness
    In the dim glass the demons hold,
    The glass of outer weariness,
    Made when God slept in times of old.
    There, through the broken branches, go
    The ravens of unresting thought;
    Flying, crying, to and fro,
    Cruel claw and hungry throat,
    Or else they stand and sniff the wind,
    And shake their ragged wings: alas!
    Thy tender eyes grow all unkind:
    Gaze no more in the bitter glass.
    Beloved, gaze in thine own heart,
    The holy tree is growing there;
    From joy the holy branches start,
    And all the trembling flowers they bear.
    Remembering all that shaken hair
    And how the winged sandals dart,
    Thine eyes grow full of tender care;
    Beloved, gaze in thine own heart.
