May both of you RIP and I hope you are both rockin' in Heaven! I owe all I do to you both! Thank you!
Rich WAS loud and brash. But he also was a far superior drummer, playing at a level Krupa could never reach (and fortunately never attempted to reach). At least Buddy admired Krupa for his role as a pioneer and a unique stylist. He always went "easy" on Gene in contrived drum solos, rather than trying to show him up.

Many moon ago I bought Gene Krupa doing Dark Eyes with the late great CHARLIE VENTURA on tenor sax. Who would have ever thought an old Russian Song like Dark Eyes could swing so much? Heres the thing about Gene Krupa whether you like him or not. He that way of playing a set that produced MELODY and over and over again sounds of floor toms and syncopated snare work. Not a technician like Buddy Rich or Louie Bellson but he could add that bit of EXCITEMENT in his drumming. I had the honor & privilege of working with Teddy Wilson for three weeks back in 60's and we got to talk a lot. Being a drummer, I asked him how he liked playing with Gene. He said this: "Gene had a way of building solos from simple elements. He could construct solos out of, say, just triplets and accents around the set, and he was always telling you a story, and you always knew exactly where he was in the song and when to come back in." This is why I've always enjoyed his playing over that of Mr. Chops, Buddy Rich. Buddy dazzles you, but drummers, I ask you, what lick or phrase did you ever cop from Buddy..!? Gene Krupa had a style all his own. Buddy Rich, Louis Bellson and Krupa could all rip on a snare drum. But only Krupa had the feel to play it the way he does while the sax carries the theme here. His snare roll into the piano solo introduces his light touch on the hi-hat as the piano plays. And his feel on the ride cymbal when the tenor comes back is rock solid. A great performance by all, to be sure. But listen to the bass player, he is particularly splendid !!

So the Gene Krupa Story goes this way, KRUPA the beginning and end of the drum solo. You listen and pay attention to Krupa you hear every single drum stroke make a musical statement. Showmanship he had it and man those facial expressions of him made you feel he was in pain but not really Krupa was digging the charts . Gene Krupa has gone down in history as the Drummer who started the Whole Thing. Thank you Gene

Great drummer, extremely influential & a great performer. Excellent rendition of "Dark Eyes" here & Gene Krupa was into his sixties & in the latter years of his life. Remarkable. However ... we will never forget though this Wonderful "Drummin' Man" & exciting, ground-breaking musician.
Gene had chops, but notice how every stroke here is about working off the other instruments and playing a tune on the drums! Very few drummers could do this-it was natural with Gene!
Paraphrase of an interview I saw of Krupa: I was trained to play dance drums. Even if in the wildest solo, if the beat wasn't there, and people couldn't dance to it, I would feel I were failing in the solo. That's a very close paraphrase. I'm just an average drummer, but the greatest compliment I ever got was by a fellow musician who said, "Every thing you play feels funky." I can live with that. I'd rather have feel than the chops of Buddy Rich X 10, and that is not to be negative whatsoever of Buddy Rich or technique. Technique is important, but feel is much more important. Krupa had the greatest feel, in my humble opinion, ever, followed closely by John Bonham. Rich and Krupa were both masters in their own way. We were lucky to have had them both behind the kit. Oh, one other thing: That little snare piece from 30-35 seconds just captures the essence of Krupa so well.... just a handful of notes that swings like a mother... simple, but so dynamic, cool, and perfect for the song transition.
Sabia tudo de batera. O kit dele era pequenino se comparado com os atuais. Mas o feeling dele era de outro planeta. E seu herdeiro no rock também se foi. Gene e Keith RIP.
that lick he does around 1:40 with the unison hits with the piano is very cool. I don't think I have seen anyone do that sort of thing before. also the beginning of the song when the sax comes in, the swing on just the snare with stick on stick is brilliant. I want to try both these things later.
Buddy Rich once said of Gene -- that Gene had what he didn't. Finesse. When Rich would play so quietly and then build up his speed on the snare -- that was Buddy being Gene Krupa. Then, of course, there was Gene who would get up off his stool and play the drums walking around them. A showman. Krupa invented many of the beat styles applied to jazz through rudiments, African beats, and his "Sing Sing Sing," the basis for many rock drummers. Ginger baker used some, the drummer in Iron Butterfly who took that long great solo did, Dino Danelli (an under-rated drummer) of the Young Rascals certainly did. But like Rich, many rock drummers didn't have that left-hand speed, accuracy, accents, & control that these men & Louis Bellson (among some others as well) had. They didn't even need a big kit. Lots to admire. Sometimes you have to listen closely.
The master of serving the song! He knew he could’ve taken the spotlight with his chops, but instead played what he needed to to support the sax.
A true musician to the end.
Never needed a hundred drums and cymbols to blow the room away. The best of the best.

His health was not the greatest at the time...he died in 1973. Still could play till the end!!!
Damn i hope i can lay down some beats and swing like that when Im his age. It's like old age doesn't even stop him from feeling it.
This deserves more views...
Gene was just one of those cool Cats who knew when to deliver the cream....!!
You can tell where Keith Moon got a lot his style of playing from Gene,Showman Drummers!!
So use to see him use white marine pearl Slingerlands.
I fucking love this man, keeps the band in his hands, I wish just a 1% of him in my band.
wow. fantastic
The truly great, Gene Krupa.
sweet as.
QUE LASTIMA HOY EN DIA YA NO HAY GENIOS VIRTUOSOS COMO ESTE MUSICO
Eternal Gene. Love you forever!
Amazing
Master's drummers
that lick he does around 1:40 with the unison hits with the piano is very cool. I don't think I have seen anyone do that sort of thing before.
also the beginning of the song when the sax comes in, the swing on just the snare with stick on stick is brilliant. I want to try both these things later.
1 tom y 1 tom de piso.
Un genio.
Humbled! Awesome stuff
gene krupa etait un génie de la batterie
"Gene Krupa was the first rock drummer in very many ways. Without Gene Krupa, there wouldn't have been a Keith Moon."
Neil Peart
THE MAN THE LEGEND!
EXCELLENT!!!! ROCK ON!!!!!!
Krupa was always more musical.
The best ears of any drummer
