It's a remount of Brian Macdonald's production at the Stratford Festival, 1983, 1984 and revived in 1995. It was one of my favorites, but it took me a while to get used to this version, owning the video release of the Stratford production. It was a step towards pantomine with the Duchess being played by a man.

Opera Australia obtained rights from the producers at Stratford to present the opera in Australia. Some of the principles protested that the Gavotte was not included. So when this broadcast was made for television, their own version of the gavotte was done separately. I think it is on youtube somewhere, I've seen it ruclips.net/video/9giVCiiHC5g/видео.html

The Duchess is one of G & S’s comic baritone roles (like the Executioner in Mikado and the Major General in Pirates).

@@ferdinandries7232 It's one of the contralto roles, meant to be played by a woman.

Expensive production but it needed some tinkering. Comic opera it may be but a bit less comic and more opera would help. And the miming could have been better. Could the subtitle writer be given a copy of the libretto in advance?
