- Today at Working Horses with Jim, we get some more fall plowing done. I try rotating the horses around for the best fit.
Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horses farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

I only saw a sulky plow used a couple times. I was amazed the horses did the walking. Grandpa and my dad used a walking plow. Guess maybe that's why I enjoy.walking. When I was younger, I walked barefoot behind picking up fishing worms and whatever else I might find. Rather be doing that now, rather than voting! Lol
Good memories! Yes! Sounds better than voting😄
That plow turns a nice furrow.
I love watching your horses work. It's almost a thing of the past seeing a team working.
Interesting system to hitch the three horses to the plow.
Beautiful straight ploughing Jim .
Well done to all the team.
Thanks!
We have land that we lease to farmers. I enjoy watching your videos. I watch with amazement how hard farming is with horses compared to tractors. You and your wife must be really really dedicated to it. Thanks for sharing your hard work with us.
Thanks for watching!
Sod turns over very well, almost effortlessly, but then again I’m not harnessed up. Another great job.
Thanks for watching!
just amazing how the horses work for Jim. They seem to know what is going on all the time and are so gentile.
I love t see Jim working his horses and they must really like him! you can tell. thanks for another great video.
Thanks, we appreciate your watching!
I used to live in Lowville Ny in the late 80’s we still had a few people use draft horse around then. It’s good to see someone still is
Nice plowing! Nice, Can't wait for the hunter video!!
Thanks!
The soil looks lovely, it's really lifted, not like ploughing done with tractors
the field is looking good
I like the camera on the horses back, the plow view watching the soil being turned over was good. I lived north of the Adirondaks for a while in my lifetime. My Family did own property in the Adirondaks. Nice video, love the horses!!!
Thanks for watching!
Jim, I am a certified journeyman farrier as well. I couldn't be exact, however it appeared as though your outside black was short strided on his left rear. Have a look tomorrow. Maybe I shouldn't say anything. Don't mean to be cheeky. I'm like the old cobbler. First thing I notice is the feet. I've studied horses from the ground up. Wyoming Jim
Thanks for posting brother!!!! Great plowing.......!!!💪🏿💪🏿✊🏿✊🏿
Thanks brother!
That looks really perfect to me. I find your horses work very well. I said it before, I envy you for your level fields. I can't even do any fall plowing anymore on our hilly ground due to the risk of soil erosion with heavy rains. I plow with a 16 inch trailer plow behind the forecart with my team of two heavy Percherons since it is easier for me to get on the forecart than climb on a regular riding plow.
Thank you for sharing all of that with us.
The hilly ground is much tougher to work with and the flat ground is a big reason why we moved to this area
Love it can’t wait for the trip in the woods. Great 👍
Thanks! We’re looking forward to it too!
I'm a retired equine veterinarian who has draft cross pleasure driving horses. Home town was Lowville. Remember driving a team there gathering sap. All the best to you two in what you are doing.
Thanks for watching! We are quite familiar with that nice town
Good to hear you had less problem with your plow.
Thanks Scruffy!
Another job well done and a great video. Thank you.
Wow! A lot of thought went into that job. Beautiful results! Looks like the plows are working much better than the other video. I get the dead furrow thing- bummer. Another great video, thanks for sharing!
Thanks again for watching!
Nice video, love to see train a new hires and how you go about it
Have you ever tried the cover crop method with no tilling? The cover crop method of field management is successful in warner climates, I've wondered if it would work in the northeast.
Hind site says you should have started the plowing in the sod ground, dang that hind site! Beautiful job plowing.
Agreed on the hind site,
Especially if it’s remembered for the next time!
A great piece of ploughing Jim, straight and everything ploughed under, great job, have you ever entered a ploughing competition?.
Yes, but it’s been years. There aren’t many in this area
@@WorkingHorsesWithJim I thought that you may have, by the way your furrows look, a good ploughman takes pride in his work, straight, everything put under and the neatness of the land that has been ploughed, looks really great jim.
Very clean earth. So neatly done. What is to be planted there ?
Thanks for sharing.🐴🐴🐴
New seeding in the spring
nothing prettier than a furrow turned in sod by horses and well tuned plow.
Yes!
Exactly! 09:14 If the cool surfer dudes on the coast of California see these big beautiful curling green waves they will want to move to NY State.

They're welcome to stay out west!😄
Nice show
Thanks!
you can sure see a difference in the soil between the sod and the corn.
You sure can!
Perhaps you've answered this in another video, so pardon if this is a repeat. In plowing like this, how long would you work the team before resting or calling it a day? I liked the LADY horse cam.
They get a good break at lunch but they can go for 3-4 hours at a time
generally I rest mine at the end of each round for a half a minute or so. The Amish tell me more short breaks is better than long ones. A good rest at lunch. Mine are not in the kind of shape Jim's are
Very nice ! What is the width of cut of that plow ?
14” plow
No expert on this , But to me it seems the plow needs to be pitched up in the front just a bit .
👍👌🇨🇦❤, yo Brenda and Jim
Yo Pocket change! Thanks for watching!
@@WorkingHorsesWithJim thought I would leave a different comment than usual, I was there with you and horses, now I need a nap, gr8 video content
Have a nice snooze 😴
Круто))
Спасибо
Nice looking furrows, Jim. Did you keep moving the horses around, because they weren't working well together, or what?
They all walk at a different pace, so trying to get them to work together in that respect. And I just like to try something new
How often do you stop to rest them and for how long a duration while plowing?
Plow for about 3 hrs at a time, how often they are rested just depends on the day and how much they seem to need it
Have you thought about getting a couple of babies out of Lady and get a young team started She is put together nice and has a good disposition
We have tried to breed her once and she wouldn’t stand for the stud, but we may try again
The horse shakes its head..... getting a brake.
Sir is there a reason u don't plough in circles.. just wanted to know if there is a reason behind it
My plow is made to go back-and-forth and that illuminates any dead furrows
How many hours can they work at plowing in a day ?
Well it varies, I don’t usually plow a full day because i log as well. I’ll usually do a 3-4 hour stretch at a time.
@@WorkingHorsesWithJim Thank you, I love it when we, the viewers, ride along with you. Hello from Montreal, Canada.
How do you hook three and keep 2 horses on unplowed ground ? Do you have some type of shift to move the plow? I wonder because I'm looking to buy a 2 point Plow.
Your evener is hitched on a sliding rod. And it goes back-and-forth as you switch sides.
Good luck with your new plow
Is this for hobby or for sport? A tractor is quicker, covers more ground, you don’t feed it. I guess I’m confused?
It’s a way of life. Tractors may be faster but working with horses is how I choose to do a lot of my field work
How many acres can you plow in 10 hrs?
Not see, don’t work them for 10 hrs
@@WorkingHorsesWithJim How many days does it take to plow 20 acres? Just curious. I know it's not about getting it done in a hurry. Your tractors are sure quiet. That is probably a big reason you do it. For the peace and quiet. And the satisfaction of working with your animals. My dad on the other hand, was not a horseman and hated working with horses. He bought a Farmall H in 46 and had horses on the farm until 1957.
@@kevinschroeder3889 we always worked on an acre a day walking behind 2 horse single moldboard plow.
They used to say you can figure on an acre per horse per day. But that would be a long day. I’ve never done that.
@@WorkingHorsesWithJim Thanks for the info
How many inches is the plow your pulling with three horses
14 inch
he never has to buy gassoline
where I can find the manufacturer of that draft plows what the brand plz
It is a White Horse Plow, manufactured in Lancaster Pennsylvania
@@WorkingHorsesWithJim thank you so much bro

Sorry, don’t understand question
