Which reel is better Curado K or casitas mgl? Also would you recommend the American casitas over the mgl one, with price in mind. The mgl running about 50 dollars more on eBay? And last thing, I saw your video on the $100 reel showdown and I believe you said the casitas was the best $100 reel. Is that still true or do you know of a better $100 reel? I know that was a lot but I really appreciate the help because I know you have some pretty good insight. Thanks in advance man!
WolfLakeGuys the Casitas MGL is a beast but its big advantage over the regular Casitas will be 3/8 and under. The casitas pretty much smoked all the 100 dollar reels in casting. But I heard its being discontinued because the SLX is coming out. Theres alot of new $99 reels that came out this year so not sure which one is the best now. The Curado is in a different class than the Casitas. The micro gears and power put it above anything else in its class.
THE REEL TEST yeah I did look up the slx and I noticed that it kind of seems like, on paper a downgrade from the casitas. Due to it downgrading it’s breaking system from the SVS Infinity breaks back to the vbs.

Training with my first baitcaster? Now that I got my first baitcaster ever, the Curado DC, what's the best line and lure to use for the sole purpose of learning. I am happy to just sit at the dock for a few 1000 casts, not trying to fish, but just Practice, Practice, Practice. What line and lure should I practice with?
I’m really interested in the exsence dc, first version. Do you think that reel could still hold its own against these two or are these gonna beat it out? I’m not much for super long casting so I guess max distance could be taken out of the equation
Great video! Seems like you're having quite a bit of trouble with the antares. I've seen other videos with issues and others with no problems. I was thinking maybe the pre set spool tension setting are inconsistent on them when they leave the factory because i haven't had any issues. Most of the time I have mine on MN mode doesn't matter what kind of line " 12lb mostly fluorocarbon" and the outside control on the 3rd least breaking power and it does great with anything over a 1/4oz. With no line fluff. Anything over 3/8oz i can turn the outside dial to 2 and it has amazing casting distance with no line fluff. For example with these settings casting a 1/4oz strike king bitsy bug jig it will match my metanium mgl in distance. 3/8oz and up it will beat the mgl by a considerable distance every cast.
Greg, I love my Antares mgl, if you have both Antares would you say the dc is worth getting too? Today I was going for max distance with lighter lures and wind and I had a few backlashes, of course always when spotting fish. I have a Curado dc 151xg in transit just for kicks. There are so many good choices out there nowadays, a Montana trip 2 weeks ago using a guy's cheap gear really reinforced this, $25 rods and $40 reels are wretched after having decent stuff.

Not the best all-around reel for me i throw alot of light lure's and it's not the greatest with the lighter stuff. and a little to heavy and bulky. Like them light and easy to palm
My opinion the metanium mgl is better for everyday use. One of the best ever made. But if long distance is the goal and your lure is heavier than 3/8oz hard to beat a antares dc.
Cool, thank you Greg. I used the Antares Mgl all day yesterday on a 6'6" M Expride and it was perfect later in the day, three 4 to 6 1/2 pound snakeheads thought so anyway. The Metanium Mgl xg is the reel I use most, recently switched two of them over to brass gears and Carbotek drag washers after easily trashing the aluminum gears on my last Daiwa Zillion. You don't notice the half ounce difference and now there are extra gears for the one I left stock.
Greg Browning to be fair, it wasnt the Antares fault. Its hard to see the lure land 180 feet away in grass. So basically the lure landed, I couldnt see it and my thumb was too slow and the bearings on the Antares are so fast that it backlashed and blew the spool super deep in like 1 second. Spool was very controlled during the cast as I was backing the brakes down step by step. From what I was measuring, it may outcast them all
I would leave a couple of mm from the top. Check out my scorpion DC tutorial vid and the piscifun line spooler video to see where how far I usually spool up my reels. But even if you overfill the brakes are so good it wouldnt matter lol
Cannot wait for Metanium DC vs Antares DC. I don't know if you would like this suggestion or not but you probably have to eliminate the side to side spool on Antares. I think Shimano intentionaly lossen the spool from the factory as a safety procedure until someone fish with it.
I really feel with your testing of distance on these reels you should try out spool high speed bearings and see if those are worth it. I am not affiliated with them but based on their instagram videos and reviews they seem incredible for the price. Most of their videos they are completely spooling their reels on casts.
This knucklehead is very interested to see the comparison with the metanium dc. I am on the fence about to pull the trigger on one or the other. If your choice which? I fish a lot of inshore saltwater.
bassking 4641 to be honest, ive never fished it. only bought it for casting because i can get alot of it for cheap. I think realistic fishing uses it and he catches fish all the time
The line capacity on the Scorpion DC is rated at 12lbs/120meters, which is higher than the Curado DC at 12lbs/110yards. In your test it looks like the Curado DC spool holds much more than the Scorpion. Are my specs wrong? I took them off Shimano’s website.

I’m worried something’s wrong with my curado dc. It’s not like my curado k. My k feels like I’m churning butter when I turn the handle. On my dc it’s almost slightly rickety and when I spin the handle fast to hear the dc brakes work I get a very faint knocking sound. What say you?
With my curado dc I felt like you could loosen the spool tension and on setting 1 you just need to thumb the spool manually ever so lightly beginning from the middle of the cast to get the maximum with noncompacts. With compact baits it just shoots them out but your thumb really shouldn't wait til' the bait lands on the end of the cast.
As I thought ...I think shimano is simply testing out the market for dc reels in the states by making one at $250 , providing it sells I think you will see higher end dc reels sold here in no time including JDMs , plus whatever they have planned for next years release.
I check my curado 200 against my curado dc they were about the same & didn’t cast near as far as what u got in ur test,I also have a Lew’s classic pro that out did both of the shamino’s about at lest 20 ft,,

OK, for me, I do have a couple of issues with the Scorpion DC and they are: 1) the 84mm handle which I just can't fish with and I hate being forced into a position whereby I must order an aftermarket handle right away which will probably cost around US$70 excluding shipping; 2) the 100 size spool, the line capacity is just way too small for my liking. So, personally, I would be ordering a Curado DC from Asia which is miles cheaper than in the States. In Singapore, you can get one for S$250 which is about US$182, the cost of a Cuado K in the States (excluding shipping). I can probably get a friend to grab one for me to save on shipping. But, it is currently sold out. Or I could order one online from Thailand for a bit more at 6,580 Thai Baht which is about US$198 (excluding shipping), but they only have right-hand crank models so far.
Good call. I put two of the $80 carbon handles on a Curado K and a TranX 400 for a Colombia trip in March and had the retainer nut strip which put the K out of commission - genius here didn't take the stock handle and nut. Also, under heavy load the cf handles can ream out, when you remove one you always see that little bit of cf dust, I now put a few wraps of teflon tape on the handle shaft to try and reduce this. The new stock Curado handles are just fine.
Roxanne Lubinsky The stock Curado handle is acceptable because it is 90mm. I can live with 90mm although I prefer 100mm. But, the Scorpion DC on the other hand comes stock with a 84mm handle instead which is just way too short for me.
look at alpha tackle for handles. they have a wide assortment of sizes and bends for super cheap. all carbon too. i just picked one up for my scoprion for $35 USD on amazon japan. pretty sure these are coming out of china. www.alphatackle.com/waterplanet/customhandle/carbonspare/
Alex, I also prefer a 100mm handle, some reels I notice it more, don't know why. The Antares has a shorter handle but used it all day yesterday and didn't notice it - maybe the heavier weight of the reel (?) which doesn't make sense. On my Revo MGXtreme at 4 1/2 ounces it's really noticeable and that handle looks to be the same size as the one on the Antares. I'll also pass on the Scorpion because of line capacity, with all this attention paid to casting distance I want some line left on the reel considering that they're being spooled with 50 or 65 pound braid, the Maxcuatro helps by being thinner but capacity is still way less than 20 or 30 pound test. A big fish right away could present a problem.

How many of your reels did you purchase? Percentage wise. Has anyone here ever tried to set the hook from 170+ feet? Unless you're using braid and a long rod you're probably not gonna stick that fish. I can see this being really useful to get crankbaits deeper, but the extra distance could be detrimental.
looks like ill be going back to amazon japan for another scorpion. with the current exchange rate, it costs less than the curado as well...was considering the curado, but to me, it just seems like a dumbed down version of the scorpion.
Its using old DC tech, and just look at the DC units in both. The Curado unit looks budget compared to the Scorp. But thats what happens when you build a DC reel to a certain pricepoint. Still will outcast anything at its price level and under though

I’m stuck in between the revo or DC, I’m loving both but I have to pick one.. one thing that to stood out on the DC was the low max drag it had. 11 max drag.. what does that really mean? Like could I bring in a 10 pound fish ? Or will the reel be too small? And I’m going to use it mainly for saltwater! Thanks for your feedbacks!
for bass fishing anything over 10lb is overkill. Shimano knows this, thats why they focus on smoothness of drag vs max drag numbers. Shimano can easily make huge drag numbers if they wanted. Max drag is basically how many lbs of pull it will take to get the drag moving
Thanks for the vid. Still waiting on my Curado DC(havnt seen any left handed out yet). Im looking to pick up a low 7' med power mod action rod for shallow cranks. Don't really care for the look of cork and don't want glass. I might of narrowed it down to the Zodias or Levante. Would you recommend one over the other,or any other ideas?
I have 2 Zodias, while they are nice Im not wowed by them. Never had a Levante but I have a Hyuga 6'8M and I love it. Would match better with the DC in color too. Its Mod/Fast but crisp enough to work jerkbaits and topwater in a pinch
I have a Curado xg151 dc enroute from eBay, one pops up here and there but you've gotta be quick. One of my favorite rods is the Kistler He3 but cork handle, also have some Magnesium 2s which are excellent if you're ok with the green Winn grips, they do have some nice mod action rods in the Kistler lineup. All of my latest acquisitions have been imports (Jackson Super Trickster, Exprides, Bone Voyage travel rods) but they're usually fast action.
Im hoping to have my DC151hg soon. I preordered from Tackle Direct in early July. Ill look into the Kistlers as I don't mind WinnGrips,just don't care for the look of cork. I know looks shouldn't really matter,but they def do for me. I really wanted the Megabass Destroyer but they don't have it in the power and action im looking for. Thanks for your reply
I love my Scorpion DC but I find it a little uncomfortable to use for long periods. Maybe it's just me, but I find where my fingers naturaly want to rest is on the screw holes.
I have both the curado dc and the scorpion dc. I fish both ponds and lakes and fish the hell out of these reels. I’ve ran into more issues with the scorpion than the curado casting wise. Probably user error lol. Moral of the story if you have $250 buy a Lews Hypermag. It’s just better.

I brought my scorpion dc on Amazon and got a warranty with it if you want to check it out and the order was full filled by Shimano.

I think the Scorpion can throw 4-5 grams with the right rod. not sure about the Curado

I check my curado 200 against my curado dc they were about the same & didn’t cast near as far as what u got in ur test,I also have a Lew’s classic pro that out did both of the shamino’s about at lest 20 ft,,

OK, for me, I do have a couple of issues with the Scorpion DC and they are: 1) the 84mm handle which I just can't fish with and I hate being forced into a position whereby I must order an aftermarket handle right away which will probably cost around US$70 excluding shipping; 2) the 100 size spool, the line capacity is just way too small for my liking.
So, personally, I would be ordering a Curado DC from Asia which is miles cheaper than in the States. In Singapore, you can get one for S$250 which is about US$182, the cost of a Cuado K in the States (excluding shipping). I can probably get a friend to grab one for me to save on shipping. But, it is currently sold out. Or I could order one online from Thailand for a bit more at 6,580 Thai Baht which is about US$198 (excluding shipping), but they only have right-hand crank models so far.
Good call. I put two of the $80 carbon handles on a Curado K and a TranX 400 for a Colombia trip in March and had the retainer nut strip which put the K out of commission - genius here didn't take the stock handle and nut. Also, under heavy load the cf handles can ream out, when you remove one you always see that little bit of cf dust, I now put a few wraps of teflon tape on the handle shaft to try and reduce this. The new stock Curado handles are just fine.
Roxanne Lubinsky The stock Curado handle is acceptable because it is 90mm. I can live with 90mm although I prefer 100mm. But, the Scorpion DC on the other hand comes stock with a 84mm handle instead which is just way too short for me.
look at alpha tackle for handles. they have a wide assortment of sizes and bends for super cheap. all carbon too. i just picked one up for my scoprion for $35 USD on amazon japan. pretty sure these are coming out of china.

Alex, I also prefer a 100mm handle, some reels I notice it more, don't know why. The Antares has a shorter handle but used it all day yesterday and didn't notice it - maybe the heavier weight of the reel (?) which doesn't make sense. On my Revo MGXtreme at 4 1/2 ounces it's really noticeable and that handle looks to be the same size as the one on the Antares. I'll also pass on the Scorpion because of line capacity, with all this attention paid to casting distance I want some line left on the reel considering that they're being spooled with 50 or 65 pound braid, the Maxcuatro helps by being thinner but capacity is still way less than 20 or 30 pound test. A big fish right away could present a problem.
I'm on my way to Tokyo this April! Most definitely gonna buy me a scorpion out there!

For the extra 10 feet and extra $70, I wouldn't buy the Curado DC over the Curado K. Most of my casts are made at 20 yards or less anyways. Lol
Has anyone here ever tried to set the hook from 170+ feet? Unless you're using braid and a long rod you're probably not gonna stick that fish. I can see this being really useful to get crankbaits deeper, but the extra distance could be detrimental.

looks like ill be going back to amazon japan for another scorpion. with the current exchange rate, it costs less than the curado as well...was considering the curado, but to me, it just seems like a dumbed down version of the scorpion.
Its using old DC tech, and just look at the DC units in both. The Curado unit looks budget compared to the Scorp. But thats what happens when you build a DC reel to a certain pricepoint. Still will outcast anything at its price level and under though

I’m stuck in between the revo or DC, I’m loving both but I have to pick one.. one thing that to stood out on the DC was the low max drag it had. 11 max drag.. what does that really mean? Like could I bring in a 10 pound fish ? Or will the reel be too small? And I’m going to use it mainly for saltwater! Thanks for your feedbacks!
for bass fishing anything over 10lb is overkill. Shimano knows this, thats why they focus on smoothness of drag vs max drag numbers. Shimano can easily make huge drag numbers if they wanted. Max drag is basically how many lbs of pull it will take to get the drag moving

Thanks for the vid. Still waiting on my Curado DC(havnt seen any left handed out yet). Im looking to pick up a low 7' med power mod action rod for shallow cranks. Don't really care for the look of cork and don't want glass. I might of narrowed it down to the Zodias or Levante. Would you recommend one over the other,or any other ideas?
I have 2 Zodias, while they are nice Im not wowed by them. Never had a Levante but I have a Hyuga 6'8M and I love it. Would match better with the DC in color too. Its Mod/Fast but crisp enough to work jerkbaits and topwater in a pinch
I have a Curado xg151 dc enroute from eBay, one pops up here and there but you've gotta be quick. One of my favorite rods is the Kistler He3 but cork handle, also have some Magnesium 2s which are excellent if you're ok with the green Winn grips, they do have some nice mod action rods in the Kistler lineup. All of my latest acquisitions have been imports (Jackson Super Trickster, Exprides, Bone Voyage travel rods) but they're usually fast action.
Im hoping to have my DC151hg soon. I preordered from Tackle Direct in early July. Ill look into the Kistlers as I don't mind WinnGrips,just don't care for the look of cork. I know looks shouldn't really matter,but they def do for me. I really wanted the Megabass Destroyer but they don't have it in the power and action im looking for. Thanks for your reply

I love my Scorpion DC but I find it a little uncomfortable to use for long periods. Maybe it's just me, but I find where my fingers naturaly want to rest is on the screw holes.
I have both the curado dc and the scorpion dc. I fish both ponds and lakes and fish the hell out of these reels. I’ve ran into more issues with the scorpion than the curado casting wise. Probably user error lol. Moral of the story if you have $250 buy a Lews Hypermag. It’s just better.
