For this genre, absolutely, but I can’t abide many people’s general disrespect for Sonny Terry, Little Walter, Stevie Wonder, or even Wammo when they make sweeping statements like this. Each was a master of his particular craft, and none of them could have done what the others did. Except maybe Stevie, who can do anything. :)
Blues Traveler was such an amazing band to see live in the late 80's through the 90's. I have seen them live many times, from small venues in NYC to massive outdoor festivals. Definitely react to these Blues Traveler classics. Gina, Mulling It Over, Dropping Some NYC, Onslaught, Sweet Pain, Mountain Cry, Love and Greed, Go Outside and Drive, Defense and Desire, Whoops and Love of My Life. As a long time fan, their first 3 albums are pure gold. All of the songs listed here are from their first 3 albums, Blues Traveler, Travelers and Thieves and Save His Soul.
Love Blues Traveler 😎 Saw them in Las Cruces, NM July 23, 1996 at the Horde Festival they used to headline. Dave Matthew’s Band, Rickie Lee Jones, Neil Young, Natalie Merchant, and LENNY KRAVIZ was AMAZING at that show!! The stage was open in the back, lightening in the distance....crazy beautiful!
Jones Beach, summer '94 DMB, Big Head Todd, Blues Traveler and the Allmans, amazing time. I think the best part was an impromptu jam between early sets just out in the crowd. Popper, Warren Haynes and a few various members doing old blues songs less than 10' away, stellar. You got a hell of a lineup, as much as BTs music was great, them putting those tours together was a big accomplishment and a gift to the fans of smaller jammy bands.
I've been a huge fan of Blues Traveler for 25yrs. John Popper is the singer and harmonica virtuoso. Nobody plays it better, period. He has a vest with a harmonica in each key and minors( like 24 harmonicas he plays during shows). "The Hook" is a great. Song, and there is a funny video for it. Thank you for this, I appreciate you.
Check out the end of the movie "Kingpin" where this band are all dressed like Amish and are jamming this. John Popper so amazing 👏Oh it may show part of that on here
Check out Hook and Runaround. They were the two songs that played all the time on MTV. I think you'd dig them. The harmonica playing in both is phenomenal.
I will not push "Hook" or "Run Around' but I will beg and plead for you to do "Alone" by Blues Traveler. The heart and emotion this band can pull off is just AMAZING.
Good stuff, Popper's emotion on relationship based songs is gut wrenching. That one runs right into Sweet talking Hippie on the album so might as well do them as a pair. :)
Everyone has already said it what's next. So all I can say is... We appreciate the love, and keep on keeping great music alive. We will be here to enjoy!
My roommate was having a really hard time in her life and her b/f wrote John Popper and Blues Traveler and she met and talked with him after he gave her backstage passes at a show. It turned her life around such a profound respect for this band. I would suggest their album “Travelers and thieves!”
I was at a concert where they opened for the Allman Brothers Band! Now thats a show!!! John Popper came out for the Allman Brothers encore and played harmonica with them on "One Way Out" fanfuckintastic!!! 🎶💥🎶💥🎶💥🎶💥
Check out Dave Matthews Band's "What Would You Say" if you haven't already done so. It features John Popper (lead singer of Blues Traveler) as a guest performer on harmonica.
Atlanta Lakewood Ampitheater. Early 90's. Blue's Traveler into Widespread Panic. I'm listening to BT and I realize something is different as I trip and dance. After a few minutes BT was no longer playing and it's WSP jamming full force into Chilly Water. The bands changed out players one at a time. One of those magical musical moments I'll never forget. And with my memory that's saying a lot. Miss you all.

Fantastic selection! One day you might want to check out the 60’s harmonica king and his group, the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. They were at the Monterey Pio Festival as well. Real Chicago blues!
Hook and Run Around! Two of my all time favorite songs. Blues Traveler is amazing. John Popper’s voice is ridiculously good and he can blow a mean harmonica.

The movie is “Kingpin”. It had Bill Murray, Woody Harrelson, and Randy Quaid. It’s a great movie. You’ve probably heard some of the other songs by Blues Traveler. They play them everywhere. Another great harmonica player is Magic Dick of the J. Geils Band. “Whammer Jammer” really shows what a great talent he is.
The movie clips are from 'Kingpin'.......an HILARIOUS film. The Coen brothers directed it ( I think ). Starred Woody Harrelson, Randy Quaid & Bill Murray. Blues Traveler play this over the end credits......on a stage in a field, dressed up like a bunch of Amish folk. 'Kingpin' is one of those movies you should react too. One of those films that had audiences in the theater laughing so hard, that your sides hurt.
One of the greatest hidden gem bands around. People only really know them for a couple of hits, but they’re catalogue is DEEP with some really really good songs. ETA: the movie is Kingpin, a comedy about an Amish bowling savant.
"But Anyway" was released on Blues Traveler's first self-titled album in 1990. They later had two big hits in 1994 on their forth album "Four" in 1994 with "Runaround" and "Hook". I particularly like the lyrics in "Hook" which juxtaposes references to Peter Pan and the musical concept of the hook of a hit song. "But Anyway: was used in the 1996 movie "Kingpin", staring Woody Harrelson, Randy Quaid, and Bill Murray - directed by the Farrelly brothers. This video was released in conjunction with the movie yeas after the originally release of the song.
J - So glad your finding Blues Traveler!! Lots of folks will suggest Hook or Run Around, but my all-time favorite is Sweet Pain. I guarantee you will be blown away!!!👍🏻✌🏼🙃
Their song "Whoops!" is one of the greatest ecology songs ever written. A 60's worthy protest song about a contemporary issue that remains an issue 30 years later.
There is a song on that 1990 album by the same name "Blues Traveler" called "Alone". It begins with a gentle acoustic guitar, then picks up a bit with great guitar, harmonica and drum work.
Got their bigger start outta NYC ... John Popper blowing that harmonica out of thin air ! - All in the groove - Dropping some NYC - Carolina Blues - The Tiding Such a good fun jam band.
I've seen BT around 70 times from 1989 to 1994. They were the best cosmic psychedelic blues bar band in the world until the hits and fame of the album "Four"; which the guitarist Chan has said multiple times was mostly a curse to the core of the band and their bluesjam approach. All the fame gave them lots of money but unfortunately were never the same 300 shows a year, no setlist type of band. "Travelers & Thieves" is my 2nd favorite album of all time. A masterpiece...my "White Album" Peace Jamal!
Big Head Todd is a criminally underrated band, I'm glad someone drug to to one of their shows, now I've seen them 20 times or so, one day I'll get to Red Rocks to see them.

Ahhhh yes. This reminds me of freshman year in college. Great band. Got to do stage crew when they came to SUNY Oswego in 1996 on the Four tour. Crazy times...
Blues Traveler has been one of my favorite bands since college in the early 90s, it's awesome to see them still getting some love. If you want to do another block of their videos, I'd suggest "The Mountains Win Again" "Carolina Blues" and "Defense and Desire". Lovin your channel, be well!
I cry every time I hear that song. "She who is wanting me, who's touch can make me cry, I can only understand by never asking her why." Damn it. He wrote that about his wife. He just couldn't work out why she wanted him, and she probably couldn't work out why other women were such idiots to pass him over.
John Popper's harmonica playing is one of a kind. I've put on old tracks that I had no clue he was a part of (Spin Doctors, in particular), and knew immediately it was him. He's just....he really is just that good.

Ya'll remember when you'd hear this on the FM radio?? Them days are long gone..
Ahhhh yes. This reminds me of freshman year in college. Great band. Got to do stage crew when they came to SUNY Oswego in 1996 on the Four tour. Crazy times...
Blues Traveler made an appearance in the movie Blue Brothers 2000 performing the song Maybe I'm Wrong.
This is another great rabbit hole to go down.
John Popper from Blues Traveler plays the harmonica on Dave Matthews Band "What Would You Say"
Blues Traveler has been one of my favorite bands since college in the early 90s, it's awesome to see them still getting some love. If you want to do another block of their videos, I'd suggest "The Mountains Win Again" "Carolina Blues" and "Defense and Desire". Lovin your channel, be well!
"Yours" isn't their typical style, but it's one of the most felt, love songs ever created. A step outside their box, proving how talented they are.
Love that song!
I cry every time I hear that song. "She who is wanting me, who's touch can make me cry, I can only understand by never asking her why." Damn it. He wrote that about his wife. He just couldn't work out why she wanted him, and she probably couldn't work out why other women were such idiots to pass him over.
I have to check that one out. I'm partial to Just Wait.
This song is performed by Blues Traveler at the end of the movie Kingpin, starring Woody Harrelson!
John Popper's harmonica playing is one of a kind. I've put on old tracks that I had no clue he was a part of (Spin Doctors, in particular), and knew immediately it was him. He's just....he really is just that good.
