I am giggling - I am 52 and have seen beauty trends and products come and go but man, social media has taken the craziness to a new level. I think Sofia, I hate to break it to you, but you are literally just aging out of these "trendy" products - the Sol de Janeiro ones are the classic example. We used to have "body sprays" in the 80s and then yes, they came back in the 2000s, and here they are again and everyone must have the new scents. But they are marketing to the same people they marketed to in the 80s: preteens, teens, and 20-somethings. I was wearing some fruity nonsense and my mom was wearing Chanel No 5. As it should be. Lip gloss and lip balms - same thing. They were HUGE in the 70s-80s and everyone made that sticky hyperglossy cherry or strawberry flavored goop and everyone had to have it. And by everyone, I mean pre-teens, teens, and 20-somethings. I was wearing sticky lipgloss and my mom was wearing Chanel lipstick in red. Did I get influenced and buy that Summer Fridays balm? Yes. Was it any better than anything else? No. So even I get suckered sometimes. But, because I am a mature adult, I am not rushing out to buy every "flavor" in the hopes that somehow it is magically better. When I see this kind of thing it's an automatic "that's for the kids" and I leave it at that.
I have 32 and I am so agree 😆 I have the same reference gloss/lipbalm and my mom with lipstick, same for perfume, during my teenage years. It’s always the same cycle !
Exactly. I love Sofia but she has much “older” taste than I do for makeup and I am twice her age. I love glitter eyeshadow even if she thinks it’s childish.
@@ralphandleosmom9075 I actually do love some glitter and wear it frequently! I don't think glitter = childish automatically. There are ways to wear it that can look sophisticated. Or not! It's all about just feeling good and having fun.
I love the MBM serum bronzer. I just bought a new one during the last Sephora sale because I’m almost out. I have fair dry skin and I like the slight color it gives.
Love your channel! I am 58 and I will say that I REALLY like the Mario bronzer.....and I'll tell you why. To your point, the product is almost invisible on, however when my skin looks dull it gives it a beautiful healthy glow and brings it to life. Happy New Year!!! xoxo
I think the Sol de Janeiro scent equivalent when I was a teenager was the Body Shop scents in the 90’s. I used Ananya, my sister White Musk. My daughter got a Sol de Janeiro scent for Christmas. 😊
Love these roasts, Salty Sofia ftw! I appreciate that you don’t hold back with your opinions, especially with all of these unremarkable, disingenuous influencers who hype what is essentially mostly gifted PR products. I personally love those Armani blushes so much, I bought all of them! With a sponge on my dry skin, they can be subtle or beaming and I dust a little highlighter (Chantecaille Lotus) for extra luminosity. Chef’s kiss, but I know all products don’t work for all people. Hope you had a great Christmas!! ❤
I agree with you on everything 😅 As far as the Illia’s palette, I was actually interested since it is the first time a palette makes sense TO ME. You get one bronzer, one highlighter, one matte blush and one luminous blush. Usually palettes have a luminous blush that is too orange or too pink and this one was more like a peachy nude which looks nice. Another reason is that I hate the recent face palettes from nars and CT since they have light and dark shades, I can only use half of the palette so why would I buy a palette that I can’t use? They try to be inclusive but creating one palette with multiple shades is just a waste in my opinion. I would say that is the main reason this palette looked interesting to me, I’d be able to use all shades 😊😊 I also like baked formulas, didn’t end up buying it because I ended up getting the hourglass x Barneys but the Illia was right up there as a second option for me.
Love the milk jelly tints!! I put them on with a brush after my bronzer before my elf halo glow and my makeup looks natural and amazing!! I use skincare and sunscreen as primer, then I bronze or contour then I use the jelly tints, I put a little rare beauty on top of that then I put elf halo glow all over it and it’s perfect!!
I am so here for these videos! Keep them coming Sofia - we all get “sucked in” by what’s really marketing, advertising and social media led product “innovation”. We need voices such as yours- thank you! Hope you’re enjoying the holidays ❤
Agree, agree, agree, Sofia! You have put together an excellent list of examples of overhyped products pushed by social media. I will get some hate for saying this but I think social media is not a good thing in our society. People don't talk to each other anymore, they text or post on SM. People are encouraged to buy stuff they can't afford because of SM. People are duped in thinking they need to look like the influencers when many use filters and lighting and fillers. You did a good job explaining your rationale for each overhyped products. Thank you.
Thank you for sharing Mary! I agree I am realizing how many people are using filters 🫠 so sad because these are all very beautiful girls and women who don’t need to hide their real skin.
Girl, I had some great nostalgic memories during this video! I remember the Lovespell, Cucumber Melon, Sweet Pea days vividly! Remember Gap’s fragrances (Dream, Grass, etc)? Lolol 😂
Totally agree with you on the Sol De Janeiro products they smell cheap. Milk blushes, the ‘jelly’ formula looks ridiculous and totally gimmicky. Saying no to lip balms from Rhode and Summer Fridays, i have one of each and don’t need anymore. The MbM, liquid bronzer is one of my favourite products, i love the sheerness and subtlety it provides.
I never bought single shadows before, only a few palettes. So when I saw the price, I was shocked. I had no idea people were paying that kind of money for singles in general 😊
I agree with what you said about the milk tints / stain…. However, I do think that they can be useful. I wear to the gym and they do not budge on my skin. So they are great for situations where one is hot or sweaty. And if you apply with a brush, instead of product to face, they blend really well. Just wanted to throw out a different perspective.😊
Hey! Just discovered you! Love your honesty! I diffinetly agree on the fact that these products or all new make-up product are somewhat over hype even though I like some of them! I m very curious to discover more of your videos and options about different beauty products!
Oh Sofia! I love the honesty! Social media and filters and unending money is just crazy these days. I will be 65 this year and my droopy, wrinkly eyelids would not look nice with all that chunky glitter 😂
Agree with all except the Givenchy powder! The original was the best for my oily skin. The Makeup by Mario powder has been a good replacement, but it's still not the same!
Agree with the whole video. I am alienated by Ta at this point. The hype for mediocre products that will mold is ridiculous. Even his blushes make me mad now 😂
These are the videos I absolutely love ❤️ that you do. Soooo many influencers raved about those items and I of course bought all and then returned ALL. Not worth the hype at all. So disappointing Thanks for these honest videos. Keep them coming!!
19:16 😂😂😂 Yup! We all eventually reach this stage and (often unconsciously) switch to follow trends that target our new demographic. The key difference now is that we have digital devices and social media bringing all of this information direct to us 24/7 from all four corners of the globe. In the past you relied on your family and close social circles, magazine articles, adverts, and sales staff in shops.
I was a Tranquil Breezes and Vanilla Lace girl for the whole decade. I had a Strawberries and Champagne set for my bathroom. When I was in college I was a Heavenly lover. Those pretty glass bottles and curvy lotions. Miss those!
I’m 27, about to be 28. I love the Patrick ta eyeshadows. Mainly because I don’t own a lot of sparkly shadows and this just felt like a safe blind buy and it was. It’s insanely sparkly and I always get compliments on my eyes. People stop to tell me they love my eyeshadow and the sparkle and that usually never happens. I love the Sol de Janeiro 62 splash for bed time. It feels just like a little extra something before bed. I also love the perfume, I always get a lot of compliments when I wear it, and my mom even bought it for herself because she loved it. Rhode blushes are ehhhh. I think the colors are what people love, they’re very muted and usually blushes don’t come in muted colors like that. But I hate the formula. They’re so creamy it extenuates my pores/dryness, and they rub off sooo fast.
You can always use powder highlighters as eyeshadow. I do and they always look so much prettier than any sparkly eyeshadow. It works like a topper essentially like you can create cool looks and just frost it with a highlighter. I’ve been into sparkly eyeshadow for a while (I’m 32 so not much older than you really) but it just does something for me. I use a couple Korean brands of highlighters cause it’s literally just shine no color and it gives me so much creative freedom go play. So if you like sparkly it’s something to try along if you like how the PT eyeshadow formula and feel is.
Love this witty video. I must disagree about the Mario liquid bronzer. I'm VERY fair and the light coverage is perfect for me. I like the subtle glowy finish it imparts. Must agree that the YSL liquid blush is superior to Armani.
love this! If Patrick Ta’s pricing were cheaper, say it was the same price as Urban decay, Mac, cosmetics and Tarte, etc.. I think it would not be overhyped. His brand is overhyped because for what he delivers it’s way overpriced. Pricing his new foundation, the same as Armani is crazy. Rhode Beauty blushes, I could not agree with you more. They’re just cream blushes at the end of the day and the component is too fat. You’re using it and paying for that Hailey Bieber, it girl experience . I’m honestly surprised MILK is still in business . Anything these days that Charlotte Tilbury releases is way overhyped
As someone with dry skin MILK makes a lot of products that work really nicely for people like me with lizard dry skin. I know it’s not for the majority considering most stuff is focused on combination or oily skin but I do love a lot of MILKS complexion products and I’m sure other dry skinned people are keeping that company alive.
Gotta admit - when I got my Patrick Ta eyeshadow duo, I was surprised by the feel of the packaging. This was my first Patrick Ta purchase and I was expecting a more lux feel.
You look so good in this video! Btw, the Armani blush in the shade red feels like a completely different formula compared to the same Armani blush in the shades bold pink 53 and rosy peach 50,5 shade. Those two blend nicely, the red shade does not blend and is way more pigmented. I think you landed on the only wrong shade you could ever land 😅
Same on every point! I would love to learn more about the business of the beauty business, marketing and influencers. Also do companies pay to be on the "front page" of the Sephora site? 🤔
Completely AGREE about ILIA. I’ve never understood the hype, they’ve always seemed super overpriced for pretty lackluster quality. Also, side note but I love the handbag you have in the background-is it a lady Dior? And where is that stunning scarf that you have wrapped around the handle from? I’m obsessed.
I agree with all the products except for the Milk blushes...I absolutely love them! Unlike most other blushes that seem to vanish from my skin after just a few hours, the Milk blushes stay put all day without budging. They’re truly unique, and I haven’t found anything else like them. I apply them directly from the stick, and they blend seamlessly as long as you work quickly. They’re not patchy at all, which I really appreciate. I’ve tried liquid tints before...they often leave an odd stain and don’t blend well on my skin. And while the Chanel Water-Fresh Blushes are nice in terms of formula, I personally prefer the Milk blushes because their color options suit me so much better.
I don’t have PT duo eyeshadows, but maybe I’ll get later on, because it has baked gelee formula and I love this kind of formula on my mature eyelids. I don’t wear Sol De Janeiro as perfume - only as body splash and hair mist.
Agree so much!!!! When you talked about the Rhode "pocket" blushes, I just had to snicker - I have exactly two stick blushes. One of them will probably not stay with me very long into the new year, because I feel like it is too glowy/shiny/greasy and doesn't dry down enough to stay without loads of powder, and loads of powder takes the shine away from it, and takes down what little pigment there was to begin with (this is the Lumene stick blush, btw). The stick blush that I actually LIKE of the two I have, is from H&M's own brand. Which I can almost certainly guarantee is a LOT cheaper than the Rhode blushes. It does the job, and is easy to blend, and stays well on the face - and what would be the point in buying more stick blushes? They are cream products! They are going to expire before I can use them up anyway!
Lol i was literally applying the Patrick Ta as you were speaking of them. I only have the one Still at the Club and I quite enjoy it. Social media definitely makes stuff come and go like crazy.
Agree on all this, except the Givenchy Prisme Libre. Agree on the baby crowds hyping it now, but shit, it’s an amazing powder! I love the Hourglass Finishing Powders too, but those are two compleeetely different products!
I agree with almost everything, but I must say I absolutely adore my Mario bronzer - I’m 55 and it does some magic for me, it’s became a staple in my routine 😊
Thank you Sofia 👏 i can’t stand the Sol de Janeiro pink dupe of Baccarat! I think baccarat is too strong for me, and I can’t stand the SDJ version…a girl came onto the Stairmaster at the gym wearing it next to me and gag it was overpowering. I do really like their 40 scent though bc the amber plum smells more elevated IMO than their other scents. The Rhode blushes are pretty but the mauve one I have doesn’t last nearly as long as my Nudestix cream blushes! ❤OMG the VS beauty rush lip balms were my jam!!!
The only one I disagree with is Patrick Ta, Still in the Club. I use the darker shade on the outer half of the lid and then the lighter shade on the inner half. It is gorgeous. I'm in my 50s and love glittery eye shadow. I feel like I'm in the minority though. Love your channel and wish you a successful New Year!
Hour glass face palette. Over hyped. I have the limited edition chanel face palette in medium coral and rose. Much more useful. I use it just as you.showed me. Eyeshadow blush bronzer and contour.
I absolutely love the Sol de Janiero 71. They finally came out with a body butter but it’s got glitter in it, and it’s so disappointing. 62 is ok but gives me a headache in about 5 minutes. The teal coconut one from a few years ago was good but a little popcorny. I cannot stand any of the other scents. I love this brand but I can’t deal with any other scent besides 71. I’m normally a gourmand girl, but Lovespell was my ultimate jam in high school lol.
I prefer the MCo Beauty dupe over the Summer Friday glosses. They have additional peptides. After using a few weeks use my mature lips looked like the did 15 years ago! Lipsticks go on smoothly without highlighting chapping and collecting in lines and deflated lips have more volume (probably like early 40s). I notice I have to use regularly to keep it up or results start to drop off after 3 - r days non use but it's worth it.
Yes but I have sleepy girl and it was a good surprise, texture, color, easy to apply and mauve suits me very well I wear it every day. I will not buy other color but this one is very interesting.
I think whatever gets into your algorithm gets to feel “overhyped.” This is why I feel like I do about rms. Every other video I see is for RMS. Am I the only one? But certain brands can really get under our skin- certain brand owners, influencers, etc can really get under your skin! Btw Sofia I don’t consider you and influencer- you give honest opinions, I never feel like you are pushing or selling anything- this is one reason why I like your Chanel so much!
I turn 48 later this week. I’ll never forget the first time I tried the bum bum cream. Keep in mind, I had severe eczema as a child so as an adult my adversity to chemical and perfumes is HIGH. I applied part of a travel size sample after a shower before bed…and after 15 min I had to get up & shower again! To me it’s absurd how chemically and perfumed that cream is! I can only do indie and niche fragrances, a majority of mainstream products just don’t do it for me and make my nose hairs burn. lol
Just like trendy clothes, we see trendy makeup - usually modeled on Tik Tok by teenage girls. None of it appeals to me. I enjoy luxury makeup because I appreciate the quality. And the older I get, the more discerning I become. Great video Sophia !
Haha. I am 42 and I still have the first and original Victoria’s Secret Heavenly bottle that launched back in early 2000s. I used to have probably 20 different Victoria’s Secret body splashes in the mega old school bottles, the tall and skinny ones that were rounded on the top. Secret Crush, Passionate Kisses, and Forbidden Fantasy were my faves!
I think, it's normal for trends to repeat themselves over the years - it happens with clothes too. To me, it's obvious, that Rhode is overhyped and people buy it, mainly, because of the bread's famous owner, Hailey Bieber. Personally, I chose the Nudestix blush, because I liked the packaging more and I don't regret it. As for the Mario stick, I was planning to buy it, but know, I'll reconsider, thanks to your video. Honestly, I'm not sure which beauty blogger trust for a truly honest opinion about cosmetics. As a former blogger myself, I understand that when brands send products or even pay you, it's hard, not to focus on the positives. But how are followers, suppose to rely on their opinion then? Every big blogger, that I've watched on this platform has only had good things to say about these products.

I'm just annoyed that an influencer like PT has the nerve to label himself *luxury* out of nowhere.

for the record i certainly am up in arms about 30$ for one shadow💀💀

So they are great for situations where one is hot or sweaty. And if you apply with a brush, instead of product to face, they blend really well. Just wanted to throw out a different perspective.😊
That’s a great way to wear them! I think they work best on more bare skin
Can I please ask if you’ve tried them on your lips? I’m curious if they work or are they ‘settle into all dry areas’? ❤
I love Salty Sofia! 😂😂😂
Big YES for everything you said!
You had me in stitches today! A fun video.
The rhode packaging is made that big to distract from the fact that there’s even less actual product then the tiny milk makeup blushes
Oooooo good point 👀👀👀
This was great and hilarious to watch 😂and very honest, as always, thanks dear Sofia!!!🤩🤩🤩🤩❤
Glad you liked it!!
The CT perfumes might not be mood boosting but you certainly are! laughed so hard watching the CT roasting part 😂
Hahaha 😇😇
This video was so spot on! I own none of these and find them all ridiculous and very juvenile
Couldn’t agree more
Bravo 👏
Thanks! 😁
If you find it juvenile its for a reason, its a product for young people
Agree with all except the Givenchy powder! The original was the best for my oily skin. The Makeup by Mario powder has been a good replacement, but it's still not the same!
Oh... there's much love here for the Armani luminous silk blushes. Every point you made about these, I feel exactly the opposite 😂❤
I agree with the summer Fridays lip butter, I like it but I’m not obsessed I feel like there are better things out there!
I ‘m with you in aaaaaaall of the ítems mentioned. 💯 agree.
I think I realized that the holiday Prada palette scratched the itch for the Patrick Ta eyeshadow duos. It was a pass for me too!
Love Spell!! ❤🙌🏼
Agree with the whole video. I am alienated by Ta at this point. The hype for mediocre products that will mold is ridiculous. Even his blushes make me mad now 😂
The Patrick Ta shadows are amazing. I have all of them, and they are my most complimented shadows! ❤
I have the still at the club and I love it!
I’m so disappointed in the two that I have.
@@tiffshorse13 I have heard that the quality differs across the shades… I returned one of them, can’t remember the name.
I love them, too
Same! They are gorgeous
I also don’t like the Sol de Janerio sprays. They’re overpriced, overrated, and the scents don’t even last.
These are the videos I absolutely love ❤️ that you do. Soooo many influencers raved about those items and I of course bought all and then returned ALL. Not worth the hype at all. So disappointing Thanks for these honest videos. Keep them coming!!
The patrick ta shadow duos swatch identically to my odens eye singles that I got in a mystery box. Love odens eye.
What lipstick Are You wearing I Loved It!!!
Miss those!
Forgot about strawberries and champagne! Omg thanks for the memory!
lol 😂 I was a cucumber melon 😂😂😂
I like the Milk cheek tints for the beach days! 😊
@@eligreene2898 I have never thought about this but I’m definitely going to give it a try! Thank you so much 🤗
Love this witty video.
You were on a roll with these products. I was cracking up laughing 😂😂
This was a lot of fun. And yes, I'm a crotchety Gen X'er.
😂👏
Same! 😂😂❤
I work at Sephora and we only received like 4 ilia palettes in each color way in October. never received them back at all after that.
These influencers are mostly junior high kids whose last favourite product was Hello Kitty or a Beanie baby
Juniper Breeze for meeee ✨
Same on every point! I would love to learn more about the business of the beauty business, marketing and influencers. Also do companies pay to be on the "front page" of the Sephora site? 🤔
Agree!
Gurl’,…. you did THE ABSOLUTE BEST CT IMPRESSION 👍👏👏👏👏👏👏👏😂!!!!
I tried 😂
god! I've forgotten about those victorias secret splashes. this takes me back, I can even smell it almost😱
Cucumber melon for life! And I bought one of the Sol De Janeiro sprays and totally ended up just giving it away. Shouldn’t have let the hype get me!
Oh thank you! Yes it’s a mini lady Dior with a little Dior scarf 🙂 one of my treasures
Oh, this lip color on you is lovely! Also, love this type of content
Thanks Molly!
Never really liked Sol de Janeiro fragrances...luv ur honest reviews 😊
This was awesome Sofia. 🎉 I love your honest reviews. Keep them coming and as far as VS, I had Heavenly, the pear one and Very Sexy.
I love Sol de Janeiro for easy days when I just chill at home, or spend time with my friends. I also like to wear it in Summer
I agree with almost everything, but I must say I absolutely adore my Mario bronzer - I’m 55 and it does some magic for me, it’s became a staple in my routine 😊
Thanks for sharing Elena!
I know a lot of people like it but for some reason I just don’t like the Baccarat rouge 🙈🙈🙈
I agree with the sol de janeiro they smell just like some of the bath and body works body mists but much more expensive and has the same longevity
The Hourglass liquid blushes in those weird little plastic bottles. They are pointless IMO. patchy too
Millennial here: we even had roller lip oils as teenagers (in Europe) 😂
Ah that’s true! The ones with the little roller balls. Those were fun
Heavenly and Champagne Toast. HOWEVER, I am on my second bottle of Chierosa 62 in one year. That pistachio whatever is a dream! 😂❤
I’m going to pick this up during the next sale.
Hour glass face palette. Over hyped. I have the limited edition chanel face palette in medium coral and rose. Much more useful. I use it just as you.showed me. Eyeshadow blush bronzer and contour.
I love that one!
I love your realism :)
The CT bit was hilarious!!!!
I notice I have to use regularly to keep it up or results start to drop off after 3 - r days non use but it's worth it.
you earned another subscriber for the rhode call out. they are ordinary cream blushes.
Yes but I have sleepy girl and it was a good surprise, texture, color, easy to apply and mauve suits me very well I wear it every day. I will not buy other color but this one is very interesting.
love this! well said. no one is reinventing the wheel.
Thank you Elizabeth! Appreciate you 💕💕
@@SofiaSeesBeauty 😘 😘
@@SofiaSeesBeauty notice autocorrect made “channel” into “Chanel” 😆- so perfect!
Omg yes I remember those bottles!
