    Sir is pent-1-ane and pentane the same thing?

      We do not assign numbering to alkanes like we do to alkenes. Pent-1-ene will mean that the C=C functional group is located at C number 1. Since alkanes do not have a specific functional group, it is just called pentane without any numbering. The numbering will only come to play when there are branches of alkyl groups in the alkane molecule. Then, the position of the branch is assigned a number.

      Pentene is just a 5-carbon alkene. Pent-1-ene is a 5-carbon alkene where the double bond is between C1 and C2. So technically, no. They are not exactly the same thing. Depends what you want to refer to.
