2:05 the song came first then Sean Penn wrote& directed 'The Indian Runner' based on the song. Sean & Bruce have known each other for a long time. At one time, he was engaged to Bruce's sister Pam.

As a songwriter, to have talent enough to inspire a film with a 3-4 minute song is quite outstanding. Very much the country music tradition going strong in this one. Great reaction man, love to see it!

I love it how you go "he's got no choice, now" but then he chooses to pull over and let him go. He sees Frank as someone who turned his back on his family ("man turns his back on his family / well he just ain't no good"), but if he hadn't pulled over, he'd be doing the exact same thing.

This is my first time to hear this song. I agree, while watching it, it made me want to go and watch it, too. I really like this video. It so reminds me of Kenny Rogers story-telling music. Thanks. I'm putting this video in my playlist.

A new song for me. In 1982 when this one was first published I had rather weak spoken English comprehension skills, and songs with good stories but musically more subtle effects did not kindle my interest. Apparently the radio stations here knew that I wasn't alone with my disinterest and played other Springsteen songs instead. It's good to get introduced to it now.
Unfortunately, I still don't understand the lyrics. Despite my nowadays more advanced skills in spoken variety of English, Springsteen's pronunciation of the words makes it extremely hard to understand what the song is about. I had to google the lyrics. Nowadays one can do that; back in -82 one had to get in a store, to check if the back cover of the album had the lyrics. Usually it did not. And... the album did not make its way to my shelf.
All this to say that it's irrelevant to have something important to say if one doesn't make sure that the recipients can receive the message. In my youth there were many bands and solo artists that made the choice of targeting just the audience with the native language level skills, and it was OK. Nowadays, in the global entertainment industry, that kind of a choice restricts a band or an artist into local markets, and I guess it's not so totally OK anymore.
Thank you for the reaction, and giving me a chance of getting more insight into the work of Bruce Springsteen.

There is an Australian reactor. I was quite surprised that after playing a Home Free video, he admitted that due to their accent, he didn't understand most of the song. I was quite surprised. I live in a Pacific island. My older brother lives in Texas. I can understand Home Free. Unfortunately, my brother's heavy Texan accent is ... let's just say, I'm still trying to figure out his first few words, and he's on to his 2nd and 3rd sentence. Most times, I just guess on what he's saying.... I've been watching Randomine's Bruce Springsteen videos, and I am struggling with Bruce's accent. I even put on the caption. I'm hoping with enough exposure, my ears will become attuned to it.

Springsteen recorded the entire Nebraska album at home using a Tascam four-track cassette deck. The songs were meant as demos for the E Street Band album after The River. But a number of people, including Steve Van Zandt, told him there was an album in the songs as they were. And you know what? They were right.

It was written for the film. It was written for the album NEBRASKA. Film director loved the song and made a movie around it. I think the movie was called "the Indian runner"

Thanks for watching, Carol! And me too! According to another commenter, the footage is from the feature-length film The Indian Runner. I'm going to have to track it down and watch! - Cole

The ambiguity of what happens next is part of the power of the song. Everyone wants to know but no one does. That's life , full of unresolved issues.

Another of Bruce's great but sad stories is on "The River" album.
The song "Wreck On The Highway"

The story is so good that someone wrote a film manus form the song ten years later. The song is from 1982 and the film The Indian runner is from 1991 by Sean Penn.

I liked this, yet another layer of Bruce, he's many things musically, this struck me as pensive Bruce! He is the ultimate anti hero, many layers, I run hot and cold on him but boy, he's a mysterious legend ! As always thank you for the video and commentary appreciate your work you put into the video!

I believe Sean Penn produced the movie and made it after hearing the song. So the song wasn’t made for the movie, it was the other way around. The entire movie was based just off of this one song

Not from Nebraska but check out "Dead Man Walking " written for another Sean Penn film and "The Wrestler " written for a Mickey Rouke film of the same name I think. Both songs came years after Nebraska but are similar in style to it.

Different styles, but as long as we're mentioning film soundtracks - don't forget "Secret Garden" from Jerry Maguire and the Oscar winning "Streets of Philadelphia" from Philadelphia. And I guess we should include Joan Jett's "Light Of Day".

Loved Nebraska. Much preferred this to “ Born In The USA “ which brought him mega stardom.

How many times are you stop it? Oh man!

    • @randominerecords
      @randominerecords  Год назад +2

Totally agree, Rene! A little behind-the-scenes: I actually only stopped it about 5 times while filming, with the rest of the commentary being spoken over the track; the other stops you see in the video were simulated in edited and were necessary in order to prevent the video from getting blocked. (I referenced this at the "intermission" screen at 5:08, but didn't go into details.) Unfortunately, long Springsteen songs are the absolute worst when dealing with RUclips's auto-blocking content ID. - Cole
