There is another interview with Zane Lowe in which Shawn says "you don't say anything, it means you're hiding something, you said something, you're doing promo" Shawn was gone for 4 years, he didn't say a word for a year, he's been playing the album for fans since August, and it only came out yesterday, you're just clowns if you think this is promo, it's just ridiculous. He didn't make noise on social networks, he just lives and makes music. As for sexuality, it's not sexual orientation (it's just one component of sexuality), and people who don't understand this will be very disappointed, since he does date women, and anyone who wants to talk about what his sexuality is has no right to accuse him of anything. Now that the cup is overflowing, he simply said: think what you want, call it what you want, according to your mind and example, I don't care and don't give a damn about you. And yet about the music, the album is beautiful, vulnerable and authentic, for healing from the mainstream psychosis and obsession. Just listen and relax your soul and mind.
Loved that ‘ stage being on the same level as the fans’ reference. I just attended his show in Berlin, and all I wanted was just to be there and love him the way he deserves. Watching all the strict and chaotic way of some guards keeping fans under control, just made me realize; all these angry guards are protecting him from people who love him, isn’t it ironical? But regardless, it’s an interesting world we live in and I am grateful Shawn is Shawn, and what an incredible man he has grown to be!

I love that Shawn's finally coming to terms w his sexuality, the sad part though is that it took him until he was 26 before he finally allowed himself to explore who he is. In this day and age, and the fact Shawn started at so young he never was given the freedom to be himself, or given the grace to explore like he can now. He doesn’t owe it to anyone, much less such a huge audience, fans and not, a full narrative realization of his recent life experiences and how they have shaped or changed him. And of course, you can have a clear sense of self and not know who you are entirely. Humans are ever changing and ever evolving, we know this. Of course there’s natural ebb and flow.

He might be doing this to get some sympathy and appear more complicated than he is. Let’s be real: being a straight white male is not celebrated in today’s society. The honesty and transparency he’s talking about is in his music. He doesn’t owe it to anyone, much less such a huge audience, fans and not, a full narrative realization of his recent life experiences and how they have shaped or changed him. And of course, you can have a clear sense of self and not know who you are entirely. Humans are ever changing and ever evolving, we know this. Of course there’s natural ebb and flow.

Saying that you know who you are in the same breath as saying that who you are is “ever-changing” or you are still “figuring it out” is saying absolutely NOTHING! That is the textbook description of being vague, neither transparent nor honest.
A honest description would be: the music is expressing how uncertain I am about who I really am and my confusion over my sexuality (he did say that sometimes he is certain, sometimes he is not, which is what confusion looks like in practice)
I totally agree that he does not owe anybody anything, but then do not bring it up! Say: my sexuality is private and I don’t want it to affect how people perceive my music.
Of course, he can’t say that because sexuality is a big part of what we consider to be a person’s “truth”, especially if you make a career singing love songs.
The issue is that on one side Shawn Mendes is performing transparency and authenticity to promote his music, on the other he is not being transparent and authentic at all.
Not making him accountable for his actions is not helpful, nor noble. It is simply maintaining the issue of hiding one’s sexuality as if it’s shameful or harmful.
It’s okay if he is not brave enough to come out, but then accept that you are not ready to be authentic and honest, not with fans nor in your music
He doesn't have to talk about his sexuality. He is telling you as much as he knows right now....that he is either confused, undecided or not yet feeling comfortable labeling himself, so why can't everyone just be ok with that? Why does he owe anyone an explanation? He is saying he is on a journey, and that part of that journey is his sexuality, but he has been going through a lot more than just sexual discovery, and his album addresses all of those things.

But my gut instinct is that he’s completely straight and feels pressure to be something other than that in today’s environment.

This could also be a way of defusing the situation by not committing publicly. By saying he’s figuring things out, he won’t have to backtrack in the future. The cynical side of me thinks there are other motivations for doing so. Seeing how huge Chappell Roan has gotten and how so many female artists come out as bisexual, as an example. His ex, Sabrina Carpenter is rumored to have lambasted him on her recent record (calling him dumb annd poetic) and then makes out with a chick. He might be doing this to get some sympathy and appear more complicated than he is.

I don't think anyone in their 20's is trying to figure out their sexuality... we already know it because it arrives with puberty. A grown man knows what he is.
