I have had one for about 15 years, I would not grow potatoes without it. Builds your rows, you can get an attachment to make you furrow bed to plant your slips and then pulls up your rows after side dressing. You are right it's worth its weight in gold.
I owned a potato farm in north Florida, we had a trick for making fat rows. weld a bracket to the back of the disc shank about three inches above the axle. Take some 2 1/2 x 1/8 steel strap and cut and weld three pieces to make a half rectangle. Size it so the long side bolts flat ways to the bracket and extends to just past the back of disc and a short piece that goes across about 5 inches and a another piece that extends about 5 or six inches forward along the inside of the disc. You bend and adjust it so it blocks the soil coming off the disc and forces it under the plants. It leaves a flat topped, square shouldered row without knocking the plants over. Your soil looks just like ours, run with some speed and it does a great job.
Wow! That was so quick! I can’t image doing all that by hand! My garden is teeny compared to that and I am sweating after 10 minutes of hand hilling! 😂
I'm getting too old to hand hill, so I broke down and got a small electric tiller. It has an attachment that throws all the dirt to one side. Works great. But I've never heard of hilling Irish Potatoes, those are early potatoes and don't really benefit with hilling. Now my Russets, yes! The late potatoes always give more crop when you hill them. But shoot, I've thrown my Reds in top of the ground and covered them with a couple foot of straw and got just as many potatoes as if I did it the conventional way.
That’s interesting! We have a small tiller also but I didn’t know there attachments for them! 🤔 I’ll have to be on the look out as we hope to expand our garden this year! And straw hilling is something we definitely make use of too.
Great video Danny! Glad to see the tractor treating ya well, that is one nice setup. Those potatoes look awesome! Thanks for taking us along, take care!
I also run a l2501 Kubota, love it,going on 4 years old,no trouble at all. They do use cheesy paint on the floorboards,my only complaint. But,I also run a Farmall Super A for garden work, hilling and cultivating, farmall is king,1949 iron and running strong.
I order mine from titan equipment I think they are out of Memphis but king kutter makes them too and I live in the same town they are made but they are 12 to 16 weeks behind production so I went with titan
Do you have the discs set exactly the same as they were when they made the planting bed? Or slightly set wider? I’m thinking about similar set up for pumpkin seedbed creation and then do an early weeding pass
That is a great way of putting the dirt to them! I have been trying to get a membership on your other provider, I don't know if I can use the name here but I'm not having any luck getting it done. Can you tell me how to go about it.
It serves a couple things one it gets the potatoes up out of the ground so they won't rot. Second it helps keep them covered with dirt so they don't turn green.
I planted my red potatoes about the same time you put your potatoes in. The gopher (a big one) has moved to the row, so I figure they're beginning to produce. Also, the leaves are getting spots on them and I think they're dying back or diseased? So, I dug 3 or 4 to see what was going on. They had one about the size of an egg per plant, plus a few the size of golf balls, and lots of teeny ones. Do I need to do something to help them with the disease so they can be in the ground longer? My hubby is working on the gopher problem, and hopefully the critter will leave enough for us too. I had such high hopes for a good crop this year.
We still gotta wait until after May 10th before we can put anything else in the ground our taters are hitting the ground in the morning if the Lord be willing.
Crimson clover makes for happy bees. Before I moved from North central VA in 2006, bees were almost a thing of the past. But, by that time, the Apple trees and grape harbors were gone..,so that may have been the reason why.
Hi! Louisiana newbie here! Do potatoes have to be hilled up in order to grow? From this point in your potato growth, how long before harvesting? Thanks for your videos!
I have been watching your videos for awhile and always enjoy them. I have a Kubota tractor as well and use in garden much like you. Check us out “Outdoors and Country Living”. My hiller is a little different but close. I got the 16” discs and also the potato plow that I hope to be using soon. :) stay safe and thanks for sharing with us!
Hive you thought about adding a quick hitch. I find mine is priceless.
I have the pat system now.
Gary here from the UK I always wondered how it's done and now I know so a big thank you from me please keep the videos coming
Nice to know! I didn't realize they sold an attachment like that! I'm new to all this stuff and I learn a lot from ya'll! Thank you!
That tractor does a really nice job of it. So glad you got one that works great .
That garden is looking mighty fine!
Love watching how to use tractor implements. Learning how to use a tractor and all it's goodies is a must!
That's a lot of work but it's so easy with the tractor. Beautiful job. Sit back and watch it grow now 😁

I love the sight of hilled potatoes.....with the promise of harvest...later,,,,,
You look like you might've done that a few times! Looks great, Danny! Wanda sure likes that crimson clover!
That is nice!
Beautiful Garden Danny!
Thanks
Just got one with the furrowing attachment. Doing a fall harvest garden near "Mayberry" NC. I didn't think of using it like this for spuds. Thanks.
Good information. I also do this to my corn.
Love that tractor!
Wow, that was really impressive ! Love your videos!
nice looking potato rows and tractor
Best job i have seen!
One to rule the day, the other the night.. The calluses, this would or could, saved. I'm glad, they survived after all.
Really nice tool
My dream car..
How nice!🙏❤️🙏

We don't have access to straw in the deep south. If we did fire ants would take over and destroy the potatoes.
I’m in North Alabama and deal fire ants too. They are such a pain!
I know wouldn't life be wonderful without fire ants.
Great video Danny! Glad to see the tractor treating ya well, that is one nice setup. Those potatoes look awesome! Thanks for taking us along, take care!
Yes sir hope all is well with you and your family.
Deep South Homestead yup we’re staying busy haha, hoping to be getting our garden in soon!
We love our Kubota. Orange is the best! Lol
Good video Danny
Great video, realized I had already watched this video but continued on cause it was so relaxing to watch you hill the taters!🏹

Look at that beautiful clover!! Is it Crimson Clover?
Wow that's a lot of potatoes wish I had enough land for that.
Looks great!!
Thanks
You put those 'taters to bed. Listen to 'em snorin'!
God provides. 🌺
Sweet , maybe one day we will have a tractor .
How do y'all plant em? Do you have a video on that anywhere?
Hmmm, I can smell them french fry's cookin already LOL !!
Yeah!!!!
@@DeepSouthHomestead I can taste them nickle size new potatoes in butter.
I love your disk hiller. I message you to try and find me one. Wonder what else you could use the disk hiller on. Maybe corn?
I order mine from titan equipment I think they are out of Memphis but king kutter makes them too and I live in the same town they are made but they are 12 to 16 weeks behind production so I went with titan
If u use d tractor u have to d rows wide enough to get d 🚜 thru
Man I need one of them tools
It sure makes life easy.
Danny, long shot you’ll see this on this older video, but do you have a link for the disc hiller or where did you purchase this. Thanks
Do you have the discs set exactly the same as they were when they made the planting bed? Or slightly set wider? I’m thinking about similar set up for pumpkin seedbed creation and then do an early weeding pass
I really like that, who makes the hiller and will you tell what your row width is. I can no longer do this by hand any more.
The hiller come from Kubota. The row width is 4 ft.
How wide did you end up setting the discs?
That tractor is awesome.made short work of that job.your taters look gr8!I'm planting a dozen today.for the 1st time ever
👍
can you tell me where you got the attachment from
What the measurement or distance you have your hiller set at I have about the same size tractor and using a brand new titan hiller Saturday
Looks great! I love this time of year. what brand hiller is that?
I bought it from the Kubota dealership.
Deep South Homestead. Thanks for your response. I will definitely check with my Kubota dealer.
Hey Y'all. Those potatoes look fantastic! Is that a Kubota disk hiller?
I bought it from them.
Where you get potatoe hiller
Where did you find your disk hiller
Sure makes quick work of it! Glad you finally got a tractor that's working for you! Did LS take back the other and refund your money?
What brand is your disc hiller looking for well working for affordability.
That is a great way of putting the dirt to them! I have been trying to get a membership on your other provider, I don't know if I can use the name here but I'm not having any luck getting it done. Can you tell me how to go about it.
It should be easy just provide them with a card number or a banking account number and a Email address.
Hey ,Danny what’s the purpose of the mounds?
It serves a couple things one it gets the potatoes up out of the ground so they won't rot. Second it helps keep them covered with dirt so they don't turn green.

If you stop the goffers I would just leave them and check them every day.
@@DeepSouthHomestead Thanks
What is that, eight 50 foot rows? And that's enough to last a year?
They are 80 ft rows. Yes this will last a year.
We still gotta wait until after May 10th before we can put anything else in the ground our taters are hitting the ground in the morning if the Lord be willing.
Can u do sweet potatoes the same way??
Yes you can.
Crimson clover makes for happy bees. Before I moved from North central VA in 2006, bees were almost a thing of the past. But, by that time, the Apple trees and grape harbors were gone..,so that may have been the reason why.
Do you get those potato beetle s on your potatoes
No we haven't had a problem with them yet.
How many pounds of potatoes do y’all usually yield?
We shoot for 450 lbs of potatoes.
Deep South Homestead that’s amazing. How do you preserve them? All in the root cellar or do you can them?
We save some fresh but can most of them.
Did you buy the Hiller or fabricate it?
Bought it from Kubota.
Hi! Louisiana newbie here! Do potatoes have to be hilled up in order to grow? From this point in your potato growth, how long before harvesting? Thanks for your videos!
Yes potatoes do better if they are hilled up. We will probably harvest towards the end of May
Homegrown taters are good
The best.
