Having lived on a farm for years and owning many outside barn cats I can attest that possums, raccoons, armadillos, and outside cats, can usually live and eat together most successfully. They enjoy each others company too. I found the secret to keep down food and water fights was to put the dry cat food in heaps or piles, about 15 feet apart, and in a straight line, on an open short grassy area. These animals usually eat food off the ground anyway. The 15 feet apart piles give multiple animals the opportunity to all eat at the same time. Putting the food piles in a straight line gives each animal their own space to eat in case another animal comes to eat food at the same time. The open short grassy area, like on a lawn, gives the animal an easy way to escape if it should feel threatened for some reason. It's important if the animals are given a treat food, like peanuts or other food, to be sure each pile of the dry cat food has some of the treat food in each pile to keep down fights. Animals are smart. Especially when it comes to food. They figure out pretty quick if they come to the same place most nights to eat where the food is, that there is a pile for every animal to eat at the same time, and every pile will have the exact same food so there is no need to go fight for another pile of food. The water should be put in a different open lawn area all together and away from the food area, about 50-60 feet away from the food. Much of the time when the possums finish eating they go straight away to get a drink of water. This gets them away from the food area too. To keep down on the sometimes late night animal traffic congestion. One night I walked outside and saw 16 raccoons, 7 possums, and 1 armadillo, all eating at the same time with no fights. The cats show up every night not only to eat but to enjoy the show of so many different animals coming to visit around the same time.
