It's sacrilege to say this, but I've always thought Tidus' voice was absolutely perfect. I don't care what others think. James Arnold Taylor really blows it out of the park here. I can really feel his frustration, whilst still sounding young and confused. The way it's written is excellent as well, each sentence and word feeling completely appropriate. It feels so raw, so real. The voice acting in FFX feels more raw to me than any other thing I've seen, perhaps because of its imperfections alongside the immensely talented cast carrying it so well.
This is one of my absolute favorite scenes, because the two best voice actors in the game get to play off of each other so, so well. When Auron says: "It's all right." his gentle tone makes me feel so soothed, like he really does mean it. And the music is perfect. Transitioning from silence, to Auron's Theme when he speaks of his old journeys, and finally, to Wandering Flame, symbolizing Tidus' feeling of being lost and like he has no other choice.

Totally agree. Its not sacrilege at all-I wonder if the people who say that even played the game or just hear jokes about the laughing scene and assume.
Like at 2:27 when Tidus retorts, "I *don't care* about your stories!" The raw emotional response is great :)

FFX's English localisation is a fascinating topic. It was ambitious, and they got a lot right, but also a lot wrong that could have been easily avoided. It was early days for that sort of thing though, nobody had tried to dub a 40 hour+, voice acted game with a rom hack before.
There's a lot of really broken scenes in it. The localisers bit off more than they could chew. Everyone knows they couldn't adjust the length of any audio clips, and Japanese is less verbose than English usually, so a lot of meaning got lost. But they also tried to match the lip syncing, which just hobbled the translation further. It's like it has the issues that hurt FF7's english localisation and fitting stuff in text boxes, but in audio form.
To top it off, the direction was really off in some scenes, sometimes by so much it comes across as having been recorded line by line randomly with no context at all. My guess is this could possibly be from retakes done at a later date. This scene isn't one of them though, it's by far one of the best parts. Auron was the best acted character in the English dub, partly because there were no lip movements to sync up giving the translation a bit more freedom, but I think the actor did a great job too.
I also like James Arnold Taylor as Tidus, but FFX is clearly early days for him. He's come on a long way as an actor in the last 20 years. However Tidus probably suffers most from the audio clip time limit problem, and there wasn't much JAT could do about that.
Despite this, Yuna really bears the brunt of the localisation and acting issues in FFX. Probably the most important character, and they really needed a more experienced actress than Hedy Burress was then. It was a perplexing casting choice. In the more newly recorded stuff I feel differently about her though, and it makes sense at last. That scene in World of Final Fantasy was genuine and nicely done. Exactly how she shoud have been originally.

Not only that but for a 2001 game, the graphics were also ahead of it's time and groundbreaking. Many games in 2001, or the late 90's to early 2000's in general, was a period of unprecedented creativity in more polished 3-D graphics, animation, epic cinematic music and voice acting in gaming history. Without the cutting edge foundations of this time period, we probably wouldn't have a lot of the high definition and advanced gaming aspects from 2004 and later on.

Tidus's complaints in this scene hit a bit too close to home, especially this one "You tell me it's my decision! But I don't have a choice do I?"
As life continues on this seems to hit more and more true, you can choose to do any number of things, but in reality choosing not to choose is like choosing death, eventually there comes a time when you really are just stuck, you might want to do something else, you might want to be free, but it doesn't really matter in the end, choosing to be free is choosing to give up, even if you hate following along this road ahead of you.
Even for a Final Fantasy game, I think Tidus's early stages and complaints here are extremely mature and realistic, I can't speak for everyone, but for this past decade or so, I feel like I've just been getting dragged along, but it's not like there's a better choice, applying to jobs nowadays is a lot harder than it was, so I've been jobless for a while now, and it's left me feeling somewhat hopeless, and like Tidus in this game, I had to leave my home behind and I've been living here for so long.
Originally this comment was much longer too, I decided to delete the rest of it, I just hate it so much here, so some of what I had to say ended up being repeats, when you hate something so much and you're stuck with it, it's hard not to bring up the same points over and over again, it's all your brain thinks about when you don't distract yourself from it, how bad is it? Let's just say that when I'm not distracted I'm probably one of the most depressed people you could ever talk to.
I don't really know where the Tidus hate comes from, a lot of what he says is coming from a place of immense stress and frustration, he's been taken away from everything he knew and can't go back, on top of that, he knows nothing about this place or what's happening, he has no choice but to go along with it, speaking from experience I know had bad that feels, and it's worse than you might think.
It's not just as simple as being homesick it's a lot worse than that.

Imagine a world that is completely fair. A world where every deed that you do is given back to you. In such a world, evil wouldn't exist. Why? Because all the evil people would have died from getting their evilness inflicted back onto them. Sadly, we don't live in such a world. We live in a world that is unfair. In reality, the Laws of Conservation of Energy and Mass states that matter and energy cannot be created. Meaning that you cannot create something out of nothing. If you want something, you'll have to take it from something else.
In reality, the only way you can gain something is by taking it. And if you give something away, you lose it. As you can see, we live in a world that rewards selfishness and punish selflessness. This is the reason why not every effort is rewarded. This is the reason why good things happens to bad people and good people suffers from it. The cruelty of the world is a testament to the ultimate truth. Life is unfair. Happiness is scares and suffering is abundance. But the essence of life is not about unfairness. The essence of life is and has always been about opportunity.
As long as you live, there will always be opportunity for you to suffer. As long as you are alive, there will always be a chance for you to be sad. But because you are alive, there will always be a chance for you to be happy as well. The little happiness that you obtain from eating a piece of candy, watching a movie, and playing a video game. These are the happiness that you will never obtain again if your life ends. Whether or not these little happiness is worth living for is for you to decide.

The first two games, possibly only two, to illicit emotional responses from me were Ocarina of Time and Final Fantasy X. This, to me, is still the greatest of the JRPG genre. While FFX may not have the best game play of the series, it is the only one besides VII where you had any emotional attachment to any of the characters.

When I was younger, I wasn't really interested in stories in games. I would pretty much always skip them no matter the content in them.
And then I got this game for Christmas when I was 10. When I first heard Tidus say "Listen to my story." In the beginning I was like "Alright fine..." As events progressed I was slowly more and more enthralled by the story and characters.
And then it skyrocketed during this scene.
Unfortunately I was "underleveled" later in the game when I fought the anti magic machina, Seymour 1, and Evrae. And then my disc broke.
Needless to say I was distraught and I wanted to see more of the game. (Which I did by watching a Let's Play)
Thankfully now I have the HD version on the PS3 and I have gotten farther than my original playthrough.
Also I don't suck at the game as much now!

      @Sawngawkuh 6 лет назад +4

@windy. The character models were actually redone from scratch, and they did change the faces a bit (Tidus in particular has a dramatically different facial structure). However, that isn't really the heart of the issue. The real problem is that they didn't re-animate things correctly for those new models. It was done by some cheap company they outsourced the work to. Fortunately, the KH remasters, as well as FFXII's were done in-house.

I'm keeping in mind that Tidus didn't exactly have a good upbringing since his Dad isn't the kind of Dad some people would live up to be. He was more immature than his own son. At least Tidus had a reason to struggle with growing up, mostly due to how his Dad treated his son over something that Tidus couldn't control at the time. Tidus was a young tyke mourning his mom's passing. You can't always expect a child to grow the way you want to when said child has challenges internalizing and emulating. At the very least, Auron was clam about it. Which is a boon considering he could keep Tidus in check when he wanted to.
