To be clear the “new standard” AS3001 everyone keeps referring to is not a new standard however a revision to an existing standard. The last revision of this standard was 2008. A lot has changed in the caravan industry since then and this standard is just catching up to what has been an industry free for all for some time. Long overdue in my opinion.
Just bought a second hand van and getting it upgraded and I knew I’d seen this before because he was panicking about the regs and I have told him to look at this video so thank you thank you so so much for this video and all your helpful updates video. Me and the boss just like following your everyday videos and seeing what sort of antics Chris gets up to cheers and thanks
I have read a few of the comments and some people seem a little confused over what the new standard applies to.........basically if your van / ute canopy / camper trailer can be connected to any Australian commercial electrical grid then the standard applies. e.g. caravan park power (unless it is a remote area that is powered by their own generators) This is not only for your safety but also for the safety of anybody else connected to the grid, as a fault in your van may actually impact on someone else connected to the same grid. In conclusion, if you have no ability to connect to the grid e.g. no external 15Amp socket to connect to a commercial power grid, then you can do what you want with your battery /solar / generator setup. Even though this standard is not retrospective I envisage that eventually it will be applied to when you sell your van or if you rent it out, which is very similar to how the Government went about installing RCD's and smoke detectors into houses in pre-standard dwellings.
I tried to get a copy of the standard but all I could get without paying $190 was a preface which gives reference to a competent person.just what the standard says about who is a competent person and and i can still do my own low voltage dc canopy setup with no external ac influence
Great video guys. I’m confused when you keep saying “ non habital spaces “, once you are inside the caravan. Isn’t anywhere inside a caravan, a place that you live in ? 🤷🏻♂️
@@tightlines21 are you seriously saying that. It does not make any sense what so ever. I can tell you now that if those batteries catch fire that non habitable area wont be so habitable.
Do the "boxing" and ventilation etc. requirements apply to AGM batteries too as I am not intending to upgrade mt current set up to lithium at any time in the future I have two AGM batteries 100aHr fed by one single solar panel on the roof of my slide on camper. I have 12v system through an Anderson Plug to the car battery - regular lead acid from supercheap I have 240v plug in for caravan park etc. power access to keep batteries charged, I have a dc dc controller thar decides what to use, where to direct the power, turn off what is not needed and continues to feed the fridge, lights, power points for recharge of phone etc, and the fans overnight.
Well done, very informative video, Remi has covered it well…. still makes you wonder how the powers to be will police this when people still do their own DIY installation
Question regarding solar. Does each solar panel wiring need to individually come through the roof of the caravan to fuse each of them? Thank you for the update regarding the new regulations.
Sounds like its a good idea to ventilate the battery box anyway. I was thinking about doing this for a while anyway. On the matter of warning labels, it would be great if any manufacturer could direct us to where we can buy the safety labels.
Great Vid as always guy's! What's the go with all the Chargers etc., being in the the Vented Cupboard outside? Is this part of the new requirement too? It wasn't really mentioned in the Video other than utilizing a dead space behind the Compressor Fridge.
I noticed Remi gives a good explanation of how to seal and secure the access lid to the battery compartment under the seat cushion. However, there is an air vent in the seat section so I presume that has to be sealed up as well?
Thanks for the informative vid guys. Question for your next vid - is there any issue or what are the new requirements for mounting a lithium phosphate battery inside a vehicle cabin? ie behind the seat of a dual cab. Thanks
Doesnt apply to a car. 2 reasons, 1) The vehicle is not a habitable area, i.e. you dont sleep in the car (unless you have had a few too many bevies) & 2) The car is not connected to the grid (at the start of the video they state the 3 criteria that the standard applies to). My interpretation anyway.
Thanks for the info :) I can't see why an individual fuse is required for each solar panel though. The advantage of having a series-configured panel is that you don't need to run thicker gauge cable. It doesn't make sense to run separate cables (thicker gauge to avoid voltage drop) back to the van.
My understanding one would put a circuit breaker just after and before the solar charger for lighting strikes on the panels which does happen, can not see how a battery can leak gas from it when it is in-case in plastic container totally ,sounds like its away for Enerdrive to sell more stuff. I built a slide-on camper with shut off circuit breakers on each step to the batteries and after them put in co2 and lpg gas ,other gas leak equipment so far have not had any leaking from the batteries because there sealed.
Regarding solar in series, do you have to fuse them individually or per series configuration? Because normally you would series them on the roof before coming in.

Question: so who enforces these new laws, manufacturer, dealer or buyer, just purchased our first van manufacturer 5/24 but after arriving home and the excitement and the smoke and mirrors have dissipated, and you start going over van and tightening up all loose latches and bolts on van that some how get “neglected / forgotten” in final inspection or at hand over and other minor type issues, we have 3 x 150 lithium batteries in plastic battery boxes strapped under seating area, lid is screwed down, but that’s where it ends, box is definitely not sealed, gaping 50mm hole to put fingers in to lift lid ect. So to my thinking, there maybe a law to state what needs to be done, but if no one is to enforce it but the customer, removing and double checking these things are to standard,or just relying on the word of a reputable manufacturer/dealer to say that it is all above board, then starts the warranty issues/disputes and out lay to return van to be fixed on the owner ect. the law is flawed from the start.Until this is checked and ticked off at build installation point, it will be up to the buyer to double check these things before driving out the gate, forgoing any trust in dealer/ manufacturer, rant over 😅

There is no such thing invented today as a fire supresnt for a lithium battery fire , mabe these lithium fosfrate batteries are safer who knows time will tell , the gas thing is an issue do they have problems with them letting off gasses and why , all i know is dont buy elcheapo Chinese made batteries that contain any electronics and lithium in them solspate or not 😮 buy expensive Aussie made stuff if thats available , and good luck , im still sticking to deep cycle batteries for the time and see what happens in a few years time , something safer and better should come i hope
Lithium batteries will burn underwater !!!!. Several reported cases of idiots backing electric car into water to launch boat only to cause a fire in the components with the fire continuing with the batteries fully submerged.

Australian made means they were put together here using Chinese parts
Definition of bomb ?
Combustible material that's confined
Nothing will suppress a lithium battery once it starts ... vented uninhabited enclosure or not inside or outside the van
Itech batteries are made in china...
They're doing it with guns too. Changing the laws on everything Australians like to do in their spare time. It needs to stop.
Clamping down on our fun! 😐
Rubbish. Just making things safer and catching out cowboys.

It’s very obvious that you have zero understanding about how this works. And with negativity like that we’d prefer you don’t watch our content. Have a great day mate.
Well I must add that even though many people distribute suspicious goods in order to supplement their usual income, I'll stick with the legal ones thanks. Jail doesn't interest me.
