She was just of the turnip truck from North Carolina grew up poor in the depression. Micky was the biggest star at MGM and pursued her relentlessly, took her out every night (even thought she had to be at the studio at 6am!). He stood up to LBM and risked his position to marry her. He was fearless, a pro, and a star. He was the kind of man she would be attracted to later on. Other than being short he was her type. The casting couch likely awaited her, so her marriage to Mick probably spared her that. He cheated on her and torpedoed it. It wasn't her (In this case). Though she wasn't really wife material anyway - she was not destined to be a "good wife" to put it mildly. I love Ava. It didn't really have anything to do with her career ambitions since she wasn't in Hollywood 5 minutes before Mick started the pursuit, she resisted for awhile, she certainly didn't jump at the chance. Ava was really just a kid at this point. (one that virtually every man fell in love with on the spot).
Well his 5th (or 6th?) marriage didn't fair much better, after he and his wife Carolyn Hockett were hosting a cocktail party and she accidentally mistook his head for a coaster while he was standing next to her.
WHAT A GREAT PIECE OF FILM.MICKEYS SON TIM AND I WERE BEST FRIENDS BACK IN THE DAY AND WE WOULD GO OVER AND HAVE LUNCH WITH HIS DAD AT HIS BEVERLY HILLS HOME AND MICKEY WAS ALWAYS READY FOR A GAME OF PING PONG.HE WOULD ALWAYS PLAY BOTH OF US AT THE SAME TIME AND ALWAYS WIN. WHAT GREAT MEMORIES I HAVE.I MISS YOU GUYS.RIP,MICKEY AND TIM!
How crazy is it to see Mickey playing ping pong on RUclips and you played him in real life, that to me is cool af, just to have met him on that personal level is wild. I know very little about Mickey other than his older roles as a kid, like when he played God, and then some early child acting stuff, and that's it, but I've heard stories he was so quick witted and made time for everyone and light up rooms from scores of ppl, he was a treasure and one of a kind, his longevity is insane to me, as well as his ability to land babes like ava, goes to show you how much personality he had.
Ava Gardner was magically beautiful here. As for Rooney, Olivier said that if he were a foot taller, he'd be the greatest actor in the world. Rooney proves it in Frankenheimer's "The Comedian."
Thank you for tuning in and your kind comment! My favorite Ava quote, from "Seven Days in May"- to Kirk Douglas, written by Rod Serling: "I'll make you a steak, medium rare. And then I'll give you the truth- which is very rare." WOW!
Doug Graves Our pleasure- if you look at our channel uploads page, there's tons and tons of rare and unique footage and interviews with some of the greatest names of Hollywood's Golden Era- hope that you find something you enjoy there. An improbable pair. Amazing the humiliating stuff they had to do for a studio boss. Playing ping pong while on a honeymoon with Ava Garner? I don’t think so! Interesting clip following with Old Blue Eyes. I’ll bet he didn’t waste time with ping pong on their honeymoon!
Mayer did everything he could to break them up prior to the wedding. And Ava was a wildcat with Mickey- he married her because she wouldn't go to bed with him- but once she got married it was ON according to Lee Server in his book on Ava Love Is Nothing.
I know she was a tough cookie, but that guy was the beginning. She ran into so many womanizers, her life could have been much better. Thanks for your work I really enjoyed it.
I don't think it was a real love, Ava needed a name to start her career, and Mickey wanted the most beautiful living woman to be regarded as a leading man in Hollywood. thye used each other, but they had hapy moments together, and always talked well of each other
fascinating little piece of history in hollywood. Ava would soon go on to be the most drop-dead gorgeous sex-siren in Hollywood ... and eventually the love of Sinatra's life. she was one remarkable woman.
Some may wonder why honeymooners are playing ping pong? The thank you to MGM Studio Boss Louis B. Mayer by Mickey answers that question. He was a big star and Ava had not hit the bright lights as an actress yet.
Wow, she was one real beauty. I can't believe in those times a guy that short could be such a big star, but I guess there's Tom Cruise, and others after him.
Well one could say he made her famous, then she started getting good roles and Mayer had a good relationship with Rooney so I'm sure after he tried to put the kibosh on them and relented that he finally gave her roles to make her a star instead of background girls
@@TrangPakbaby Yeah and I would agree with that statement,it's just that when a man gets a "trophy wife" it's common knowledge but when it's the other way around,it's never acknowledged, women innocently love you just for you,and have no ulterior motives according to society...or so it seems.
@@bobbyokeefe4285 what tf sounding salty to me, get over it, and hit the gym, or make yourself the best version of yourself. I've had lots of women out of my league, and its mostly due to my personality, and be a machine in bed lol. Mickey was famous and one of Hollywood's biggest stars then, and he still had a hard time landing ava, but his personality and quick wit is legendary, and ava was able to overlook his shortcomings 😂 and fell in love with Mickey, so any man who is successful no matter there looks and has a decent character and somewhat funny can have most any woman he chooses if given a chance.
Nearly 70 years later and this union is still beyond comprehension.
tjmooney she thought it would help with her career. It didn't.,

Almost 80 years ago, these two and their contemporaries are now ALL loooooong gone. We really are but a vapor...
Neither was made for marriage and neither had a particularly good ending.
She could give as well as she got- she was no pushover... thanks for watching.
Mickey Rooney's marriage to Ava Gardner reminds me of Roger and Jessica Rabbitt
the prettiest loveliest woman ever Ava

If she was living- Ava would be 91

AHAHAHA! You're a good man, Bill. Happy Easter. and thanks.
Mickey's got some good coordination with the paddle. Even playing ping pong Ava looks like a star.
this is great, thanks so much for posting
Wow..a neat little piece of history. Very neat.
What a great video! Ava and Mickey were young and in love. Its a pity it didn't work out for them. Mickey always spoke of Ava with kindness later on.
Mickey had serious personality issues. He was not husband material....8 wives!
Ava!! So beautiful here...and always!
Ava Gardner and Elizabeth Taylor ❤❤❤❤❤
Mayer did everything he could to break them up prior to the wedding. And Ava was a wildcat with Mickey- he married her because she wouldn't go to bed with him- but once she got married it was ON according to Lee Server in his book on Ava Love Is Nothing.
She was raised in north Carolina in the 30s I'm sure she had deep Christian values, but once married, I bet Mickey was up to his neck in it
Great footage
Love the look she gives @ :32!
I know she was a tough cookie, but that guy was the beginning. She ran into so many womanizers, her life could have been much better.

Mickey Rooney ruined a good thing. He didn't realize how lucky he was.
What a magnificent creature she was!

Which is why I can’t wait to read her autobiography that will be in the mail tomorrow! I’m so excited!
She had a lot of lovers after Rooney taught her about sex.
Even married to Ava he still pursued other women.
Mickey Rooney claims he was Table Tennis champion in California for 5 years.
He was very very handsome when younger
I'll never understand this relationship. She was waaaaay out of his league.
of course! lana had a tough childhood mainly because of her father's murder but she was very outgoing and got through. 2 very beautiful women!
Rooney was playing out of his weight division there.
Don't think ping pong entertained her for long
LMAO! Yeah, she preferred schling schlong... and a few shots of Calvados before a matador or two... :)
Ava enjoyed sports very much
Some may wonder why honeymooners are playing ping pong? The thank you to MGM Studio Boss Louis B. Mayer by Mickey answers that question. He was a big star and Ava had not hit the bright lights as an actress yet.
how innocent she was with that monster!
Why was Mickey a monster?
omg, she's so cute
She was not "cute" , she is way beyond that and had a sexy beauty that was sultry.
Frank thought the same... :)
SO adorable...
@@jamesdunn9714 she can be all those things and cute
Wow, she was one real beauty. I can't believe in those times a guy that short could be such a big star, but I guess there's Tom Cruise, and others after him.
A nobody (Ava) married a superstar (Rooney), and he cheated on her. Go Figure
Well one could say he made her famous, then she started getting good roles and Mayer had a good relationship with Rooney so I'm sure after he tried to put the kibosh on them and relented that he finally gave her roles to make her a star instead of background girls
He cheated on Ava Gardner??? Really????
She was very in love with him
Ava wasn’t well known at that time and very innocent. She got her break 3 years later in “The Killers”.
He was a womanizer
Goddess!
He was so handsome Mickey 😍
oh come on Ava, you could do better than that! lol
Mickey was a big deal❤😍
I wonder if she found him physically attractive, he's like Bonzo next to her.
Como pudo enamorarse Ava y Judi de él, no era atractivo🤔🤔
Proof women will be with anyone for the clout,if he was an unknown she would've not even talked to him.
@Strong Woman Thanks for the conformation lol...
Oh please. We could say the same thing abt men who pursue beautiful women. If she wasn’t so stunning he wouldn’t have looked her way.

Who was at fault? Heck, both of them managed to get married 8x each. Yeah, right.
George Strum AHAHA! True! :) Well, LB Mayer had a bit of influence on at least this one...
Ava was married only 3 times. Mickey, Artie Shaw, and Frank Sinatra.
Ava only married 3 times.
She looked very insecured.
She was! LB Mayer practically gifted her to Mickey Rooney- although Mickey was quite a remarkable man.
She was a kid, fresh from the tobacco fields of North Carolina, living in Southern California and married to the most popular movie star at MGM!
So done for the camera, who relaxes dressed up like that.
