On this video we are responding to the channel Be Amazed and their video on bad ass armour. Armour is a very misunderstood topic, particularly when talking Medieval armour or armour of the Middle Ages. Hopefully with this video I'll be able to clear out a few misconceptions that unfortunately still made their way onto the video I'm responding to.

I think these videos are wrong just to get views for being so wrong.
I got the feeling they were saying 15th century not because of the 1500s; but because of the 1400s. This one, and the circles they play in are always saying things like the 1400s Renaissance era was the height of the Middle Age arms and armour. They like to say things like the 1500-1700s didn't really improve over the 1400s as the tech doesn't evolve much and then starts to decrease as they phase out of usage. :o( grrrr

The frogmouth helmet doesn't rest on your head, but on your cuirass, which rests on your plackart which rests on your hips, the strongest part of your body. European armour was amazingly engineered.

@@off6848 It was also not intended for COMBAT, but for Tilting Tournaments, where you only have a single opponent who is right in front of you and situational awareness is thus less important than not having shattered lance splinters fly up from beneath and lodge themselves in your underjaw, chin, and neck, potentially killing you.
Going to battle in a frogmouth helm was the medieval equivalent of going to battle in goalie mask.

I could easily see that being a line in some comedy movie or something that pokes fun at hollywood and their habit of making armor offer about as much protection as toilet paper.
Kinda like modern firearm warfare with helmets. Just think, it took until WWI for helmets to become popular and even then entire factions chose to keep wearing caps instead.
Millennia even, the invention of the helmet predates the Roman calendar by at least a couple of thousand years. People have been cracking each other's heads open for a while lol.

So yeah, they've been around for a while.

the 15th 16th century thing could initially be a simple slip of the tongue but as the video progressed it became clear they didn't understand it correctly. Simple helpful guide if anyone out there ever gets confused like I sometimes do... just remember that the first century did not start at 100, it ended at 100. Because there isnt a 0st century.
we live in the 21st century, and the years start with 20, it's always 1 less except for the last year of the century.

It's pretty basic, really: there is no AD 0; there's AD 1, and 1 BC, right next to each other. This fits with the typical use of numbers in arithmetic, where a whole number represents a whole item. So the decade concludes at the end of the 10th year, the century at the end of the 100th year, and so on.

I won’t be able to watch the rest of the video until later but I’m past the 10 minute mark and I have to say I’m *really* impressed with how much patience you’re showing
We need to make 21st century full plate armor with:
- 360° cameras (optical, regular night vision and thermal(of course)) instead of slits and a full field of vision "zero" latency VR headset
- NIJ lvl 4 bulletproof full plate armor
- an exoskeleton to carry the weight
-MOLLE webbing on all plates
Because why not.
We gotta start somewhere if we want power armour like in Halo or Warhammer 40k.

Molle is totally unnesessary, you've got rigid plates, so you can use sturdier attachment systems, maybe something like the hard points on the H&K XM8 rifle, or even simple screws.
We'll see.

For the helmet, tainted glass in a very strong material is optimal, that way you can conceal what you are looking at or thinking while having optimal range of vision
I remember the TV show Galavant depicting a drunk knight puking inside his frog helm, with the majority of it spilling out the visor. That memory comes back every time I look at a frog helm.

As someone who was a goalie in ice hockey, I can really appreciate how armor gets distributed. Both in terms of how the weight is distributed and the location of any given element. There are a bunch of parallels along with one huge difference. (The difference being that goalies have essentially an 'all or nothing' distribution)

@@gorillaau Hard to tell. It happened a few times. Always when there were a mess of players right up in my face. Also its not like anyone was intentionally slashing.
addendum: I would honestly be impressed by any goalie who could, in full gear, slash the back of their own leg.
edit: I should reiterate the fact that I played hockey not soccer. We won our games with skill not whining. So something as minor as getting thwacked in the back of the leg with a stick was not something to complain about. Better to just keep playing. Even as the team that constantly had the highest number of penalty minutes against it in the league, our coach consistently had us go against that kind of crybabyism (even if we could have massively benefitted from such behavior given our offense players tendency to get penalized). Never downplaying anything serious, never overemphasizing minor things. Just play the game.
@Lewis Taylor I was in part kidding. Yes, the way padding or Armour is doubled over or halved us interesting.
Take another sport, cricket, front of shins are protected but hips are not. See also bodyline series, Australia vs England, in the summer of 1932 to 1933.

Frankly speaking protecting one side of something is how most things go about it. From armor to sports protection to kitchen pans (you don't put a non-stick coating on the side that gets heated). Just look at how most battlefield armor is just that, stuff like shin & chest protectors. The full sets I was referring to originally are really just a drop in the bucket in comparison. Plenty of good reasons for doing it this way as well.

John Howe, the Tolkien illustrator and concept artist for the Lord of the Rings films, is himself an expert on medieval armour and went to great lengths to design armour that not only looked cool but was fully functional. Maybe the LOTR armours would be a topic for the channel (in case you haven't already done this). There is a cool section of the LOTR bonus material on the Extended Edition that shows examples of this.
Well, the cuirasses that the men of Gondor wore looked like it had all the mobility of a muscle cuirass, and hardly in keeping with the contemporary mid 15th century aesthetic that they were going for with their barbutes, as well as the arm and leg armour. That much did look a bit "cosplay".
The thumbnail looks almost exactly like the Loyce Knight helms from the Dark Souls 2 expansion "Crown of the Ivory King". 🤺

I'd assume the reason they messed up 15th and 16th century so much could be because they read dates in the 1500s, so they assume 15th from that. It's a fairly simple mistake.
1st century is from year 0 to 199... 2nd century is on the dawn of the 200th year and ends on the 300th. Stupid silly historians can't count all regular like.

They just wanna get as many top 10 videos out there as quick as possible and I guess just do a quick research and don't really proof read anything very much. Is there any way you could do a video on helmet padding vs helmet suspension system? From what I've read online it seems like both were used, but I've only ever seen videos about padding. Apparently some holes in helmets suggest they had a hard hat style strap suspension system. What are the merits and demerits of each system?
There should be lots of videos about the straps and such. We don't just 'think' they used a hardhat style suspension system, we have found them with it still intact. Metatron has a few, I think Matt over at Scholaglatiatoria does, and Shad too. Examples given in all cases as well, so should give you all the know you need.
Ever do a video about the flexibility of Medieval armor? There's a misconception that Medieval armor was very inflexible but I've seen authentic recreations of battle armor that was VERY flexible. I'd love to see your take.
Some of his old videos show him playing around in armor being very mobile.
There is an older video covering this. I forget the name of it. Also there is a video out there of someone doing stuff like cartwheels and running in armor.
@@TheDraco877 I think that's one I've seen. I've also seen one of someone doing a forward roll in a full suit. I had an argument with a coworker about it because he was under the impression that Medieval plate armor was hard to move in and I about died. XD
The misconception comes from people wearing fake armor not actually made for battle or real but not fitting armor.
@@schwarzerritter5724 Also film and television depictions. They never seem to realize that armor weight, when distributed across the body doesn't feel heavy. Much like the "wearing bricks on your head" comment from the video Metatron is talking about. additionally they don't realize how many ways they can segment metal plates to add some really amazing movement.
I don't know why but the part where Metatron slowly realizes that the channel doesn't know how centuries work had me laughing.
As a rule I question the authenticity of any historical video that uses footage from Braveheart.

One thing worth pointing out about samurai armor is that Japan didn't have the vast supply of iron that Europe had. They had to use metal sparingly so they opted for cloth, leather, and other renewable material for their armor.
Reminded me of the Mythbusters episode where they made/tested lamellar paper armor (although I believe the myth was Chinese in origin, not Japanese). Surprisingly functional and effective… until it got wet. 😅

I just love the frogmouth helm. It just gives the knight an eerie inhuman appearance. No wonder the Dark Souls series so successfully managed to make them feel uncanny valleyesque and disturbingly monstrous.

This is exactly why I stopped watching the Be Amazed channel after a few videos AND why I continue watching the Metatron channel.
Sure, Ben Amazed shows interesting things, but they aren't specialized in these topics. Metatron is specialized in his fields of interest and takes care to provide us with correct information.

I'm beginning to base my reference of history on what he has to say. He makes sense! I wish he would do a show about, "The Man in the Iron Mask" (if he hasn't already). Not exactly armor but intriguing. What kind of mask, could have been some kind of helmut could be worn for 34 years? To me this is one of the most interesting parts of past history. I think the 15th/16th Century mistake could be something I had to figure out in primary school already - that 1500's is actually 16th Century, because the first century didn't start at 100 AD, but was a period from 0 AD to 100 AD.

When you said that people wire frog mouths in combat, do you have a video on that? I always hear that they were only for the list but I see them in artistic depictions of combat all the time so I wonder if they were sometimes used in combat.

@@off6848 There are some sources that show this helmet in on-foot combat. For example a battle scene in "Combat of the Thirty" by Pierre Le Baud

@@off6848 Thats possible, that he dismounted and did not plan to fight on foot (which is always a possibility in a battle). But it mostly shows that this type of helmet was not just tournament equipment. At least according to what that source depicts.

On the point of weight with the Frogmouth the thing is even at the heaviest ends it actually doesn't really matter all that much, at the end of the day it wasn't the sort of thing you had to wear for hours on end during a battle but something that you put on just before you went into the jousting arena (can't remember its name) did your thing then took it off again once you was done.

I always got confused about that when I was a kid that the 1900s were called the 20th century. Once I got older I understood why that was. I wonder if he was making the same mistake?
A lot of the stuff about the armor has been discussed already, I'm gonna mention the Hercules/Heracles mix up. There is a real problem in anglosphere education where the distinction is rarely made outside of academic circles and from my understanding that seems to be a relatively modern trend in the humanities. For example, a lot of media around the myth, even if it is based entirely on the Greek mythology, will use the spelling Hercules. In general this is a problem with a lot of mythology that is shared between Greek and Roman sources, for example I once found an old copy of the Odyssey at a library that used the spelling Ulysses instead of Odysseus.

Excellent video, Metatron, I love that you correct the barbarities that are said about history on the Internet. Listening to the things that this guy comments in the video that you criticize, I do not know that it impresses me more of the RUclips content, that there is a huge amount of ignorant youtubers making videos on topics that do not understand, misinforming people or that there is an equal amount of ridicule of people who see them, despite their stupidities. We already know where errors in the popular perception of history come from, currently; Something ironic if we take into account how easy it is to find ideal information about any topic on the Internet, you just have to look well. =/

I get the impression that "Be Amazed" is the kind of channel that repeats what they hear from others, without actually knowing the source material themselves. The constant confusion with 15th century versus 1500s was a dead giveaway.

Also do you read manga? Can you make a video about any you’ve read? If you’re interested Berserk, Vinland Saga, Vagabond and Kingdom are great and they are about war so it should be fun.
I would imagine an open face helmet would be used situationally rather than swapped out during a battle (in general taking off your helmet in battle even with pretty good distance from the field would just be ill advised). So knights could fill many rolls, ranging from being a military unit on a large scale battle to being a raider, law enforcement, or even more subterfuge type rolls such as tracking down or investigating threats. So they may likely have had two or more kits (or partial kits) to use depending on the situation, and a kettle helmet that's made of decent steel and offers full visibility is obviously preferable in many situations. It's also one of my favorite helmet styles in history.

Interesting stuff. I recently discovered that my old family crest actually had a frog-mouth helmet and the centre peace. I am hoping to do some proper research into this.
Also, very nice to finally see the information about Samurai Vs European armour weights being sorted. I hate playing to stereotypes and over-simplified information. All armours from around the world evolved over hundreds or thousands of years, there is no one set of Samurai Armour or one set of European armour. This myth needs to be busted and to teach that historical culture is not as simple as it is often made out to be.

I who am Swedish is relatively used to make that misstake with the meaning of the centuries, but thats because we usally more oftenly say something that could be better translated as "1400- hundreds" or "1500-hundreds" in Swedish than that way of referering to centuries that is the most common in English. But since the guy in the video you're debunking has a clear American accent I doubt language barriers are the propblem in this case.
I'm going to go out on a limb and say the video voice person equated the 1500's with the 15th century, not understanding that they were the 16th century, because you add one to get the century, since the 1st century AD starts at 0. Also, as far as armour goes, I think so many videos forget that armour was battlefield tested and evolved over time. It HAD to work because not working = dead. They seem to think that the armour of the time was entirely for show. Armour throughout history has been as effective as we could make it given the prevailing circumstances. I doubt many people ever wore armour they knew was less effective, on the battlefield, when they had a choice. Anything they wore had a purpose, and mostly that purpose was keeping them alive.

I frame it in that way, because wearing regular glasses, someone can move their whole head around to directly face what they are looking at, while when wearing bifocals, the wearer must move their eyes down, to look through the different lens, rather than tilting their whole head down...
