  • This video shows a snippet of a private video recording from 1982. The recording is on an old VCR tape and is played on a Philips N1702.
Does anyone have an idea what is causing the image distortion at the bottom? I look forward to any advice. Thank you in advance.

Hat jemand eine Idee was die Bildstörungen im unteren Bereich verursacht? Ich freue mich über jeden Hinweis. Vorab vielen Dank.

The pdf is okay. Its on page 45 ;-)
The board is easy to find, remove the top cover, it is the upside down board in the middle.
The board has the components facing down.
You can flip the board backwards

DO NOT change the potentiometer settings unless you are shure in what you are doing.
Sorry, but you can mess up a machine easy.
The little boxes are shields for little boards inside.
Sometimes a board or "blikje" as we say in holland goes bad.
For that you need another machine to exchange them.
One time i have repaired a machine simply by changing out the big board on the right.
Maybe you can ask a question @ forum.mfbfreaks com
    But beware, it's in dutch
    Or maybe @ vintage-radio net

I think this distortion shows only on this tape?
Sometimes you can use tracking to move it down.
If not, then i think it is just the machine who recorded this video.
Some old tapes like Scotch verry bad and it is very hard to get a decent picture.
The tape isnt flat anymore, and on some places there is almost no tape/head contact.

Hello. When tracking adjust is not enough, maybe, is due because it's needed to adjust the "roller guide" or anything is provoking this bad align of the belt to the head.

Did you clean the audio/sync head too?
See my n1702 video fix 5
Maybe you can make a recording and see if the problem is in the compatibility.
I have had the same distortion, but was always 1 tape.
Another can be the switches on the board behind the tape transport keys. (panel 21)
One switch moves when you use record key, one when you push play. (sk201 and sk 202)
Wiggle the (playback key) white plastic stem a little during playback.
    Maybe that's the problem.

Hi. I found the board and the playback key. Wiggeling doesnt´help :( I also cleaned the video heads again and the audio head and the audio/syn head. And in addition, the guide rollers. The distortion is still there.
I recorded the results and will post it the next days.
Maybe there is an defectiv component? Like a capacitor? Or may it help to adjust the potentiometer inside the silver boxes in the inside of the recorder?
    Thanks.

Hi. Thank you for the tipps. I just cleaned the video heads so far. I will try cleaning the audio/sync head too. Next weekend. I will report you.
One more question. Do you know the PDF file from radiodatabase.nl about the 1702? Is this file enough information to find panel 21, sk201 and so on?

Hi. The distortion shows at every tape. I used tracking, and it is working very good. But the distortion is still left. So I think the machine has a defect. Do you have more ideas? I cleaned the heads one time till now. But unfortunately no improvement. Thank you.
