When he says “I sometimes wish I’d never been born at all” you can tell that one of the recordings is what they used in the bohemian rhapsody scene when Freddie came up with the song on the piano.
I never comment on anything but I want to say these videos are wonderful and I love all the in-depth analysis. Please don't worry about making them too long! If they are double the length I would still watch, and I don't even know anything about music! I tried to go to the discord link but it didn't work, so here are my requests: 1. Voice analysis of Under Pressure 2. Voice analysis of Don't Stop me now 3. People say Freddie's voice is "thinner" towards the end of his life, what does that mean, can you give examples and comparisons to his earlier voice? 4. What's the difference between head voice and falsetto? Which one is harder to sing? I thought falsetto is easier but some of your videos you seem to suggest it's hard? 5. Why does he sound so different in his later songs like "Winters tale" and "show just go on"?
Hello! What a great comment. I’m excited to answer all these questions as soon as I can grab my computer in 1-2 hours. Thanks again and I’ll be replying in a while :) on the meantime here’s another Discord link: discord.gg/4B7S8xe but if still doesn’t work I’ll answer over here in a while of course
Here I am! 3. To understand "thinner" in Freddie's voice I always think of the opening line of We Are The Champions. "I've paid my dues"; if you compare how he sings that phrase in the studio version (1977) and then listen how he does the same phrase on Wembley/Budapest (1986) you'll see how much "thicker", deeper and "more macho" the 1986 version is. As opposed to the "thinner" version of it, done in 1977. Some people say he did that as a stylistic change, to be more "macho", as opposed to his more feminine 70's self. I don't really agree, from a singing point of view, since he already had a very macho voice in 1975 in live performances (opening "Mama" on BohRhap, A Night At The Odeon 1975 is incredibly deep; to mention an example). But the change in tone (1977 vs 1986) can be explained maybe through smoking and aging (apparently near your 40's the voice gets a lot darker). Also nodules and a more tired voice from non-stop touring. So what I think happened towards the end of his life is that he recovered his "original" tone, although more mature of course. But he did stop smoking, and he did stop touring as well, so his voice was cleaner, and well rested. It recovered in lots of ways, so that would explain why it changed so much towards 1991. I don't think it's a "thinner" voice; it's just thinner in comparison to how incredibly thick it was in the mid 80's. Maybe that's what people mean. Hopefully that made sense :) 4. Although singing terms like that can be incredibly subjective and end up meaning different things for every singer, from a "scientific point of view", head voice and falsetto are the exact same voice mechanism (M2). The difference I make between them is the amount of air involved. Falsetto has very little air pressure and head voice has a lot more, therefore sounding more "full", more similar to chest voice maybe. I would say falsetto is a lot easier to sing. An incredibly well developed head voice (M2) can sound perfectly like chest and people won't even notice... and that takes a ton of practice, so that's harder. Falsetto is just falsetto. I think it's easy to produce, but difficult to make it sound "beautiful", if that makes sense. For Freddie, I probably said his falsetto in Somebody To Love was very hard to do, not because of the falsetto in itself, but mostly because it's a very high note that requieres training to reach in any mechanism. 5. Hopefully I kind of answered this in 3), but let me know if you meant something specific about those songs in particular and I'll try to give you some insights if I can :) Feel free to ask any other questions! I love these topics :)
@@MAOG333 wow thank you so much for your insight!! I didn't expect such a detailed and interesting answer, you are awesome! This makes a lot of sense. Nowadays the overdubbing technique is overused!
