The cords are short because they want you to sit on the floor and play, like when we were kids. But sitting on the floor at my age will tear my body apart!!
1:05:55 I think the public Nintendo event in Kansas City that Dan mentions could be the 1990 Nintendo World Championship tour. They toured 30 cities to get local winners to later compete in the finals and Kansas City was one of the cities.
DevinAK49 Yes, though if they did I would expect all of these to be on it, Super Mario World, The DKC Trilogy, ALLTP, Super Metroid, FF4 or 6, Secret of Mana, Megaman X, Kirby Super Star, Final Fight (even though 2 or 3 would be better than that weak port), and Contra 3. Though if they do make a Snes classic, they release should extent the controller length, or double the amount of games it can hold to 60.
jesusnthedaisychain Gamecube was basically a smash bros machine. Though I have fond memories of Sonic Adventure 2, even though I now recognize it to be terrible.
Hey guys could we get a few more comments on how it's called a quick look but it's actually two hours, don't think we have enough. Obviously it's people who aren't familiar with Giant Bomb but holy shit it's like every other comment
Great video and commentary, good combination for this. I am in between ages of Jeff and Dan. It's was a nice mix of stuff I'm not familiar with and stuff I remember. Cheers!
That Nintendo Magic, i.e. 'how will they manage to fuck this up in a totally bizarre and unpredictable manner?' Answer, insanely short controller cables.
Sprite flicker fixing is actually technically possible on most NES titles. The sprite list of the NES allows many more sprites than it can display on any given line, so the NES hardware alternates the display sprites that it will draw during sprite line prefetch in the hblank. Some games will still flicker because they do so in software, and some may glitch in other ways, but generally, an option would have been welcome - they merely needed to test which games work fine with a flicker fix and disable the feature for others in the game manifest. On the other hand, if they actually implemented cycle exact co-emulation of graphics IC and CPU, that might be a bit more difficult, traditional approach is per-line emulation.
Hyperkin are bringing out controller lead extension cords. They are also bringing out conversion cables I believe to use original nes controllers on the mini.
The ATgames Genesis lets you plug in a cartridge and original controllers. The portable version lets you load roms off an SD card. Sega does what Nintendon't.
Cats Man they allowed.carts, because the games included were garbage. the whole thing is garbage in fact. I bought both the portable and console.. the sound is garbage, the games are garbage (99%of them anyway) Sega should have oversaw the project...
DevinAK49 segaretro.org/Arcade_Ultimate#Using_an_SD_card I think there is another portable one that does not support SD cards, but there's so many I can't keep up.
I own several and they're great (unless you wanna rock some Red Zone) but none have saving until the new 2016 models. So playing any of the substantial games was awful. Can't wait until this year's models are cheap.
Anyone complaining about this being a two-hour long 'quick look,' let me put it into perspective: if you can manage to play and beat all 30 NES games featured in this video in under two hours, then you have the right to complain that this isn't a 'quick look.' Also, who complains about more content in a video? You should be happy there's such an in-depth look a a product like this available for free anytime you want to watch it.
Excitebike you've got to use B to accelerate, but then lay off and use A to maintain at top speed. Basically you were driving in 1st gear the whole time.
My only issue with this thing is that they didn't include *all* games from the library or at least allowed the user to add them themselves to the console. Maybe the latter will be possible in the future once they pick that thing apart. It's a really cool thing despite some of the obvious flaws. Personally I think it's well worth the price mostly considering because this *is* a NINTENDO console and not a cheap no name knock off.
19:42 The sound of that jumping/falling thing for my Apple II, which I think was ripped from Coleco, was mind-numbingly intense. You could probably use it as a lead for dubstep.
They also screwed up by not including a shortcut button combo to exit a game and select another or access your savestates. If you are going to make an emulator based system you might as well add the things that make them worth using. So even if the controllers were 6ft you'd still have to get up to access other games and save states. It would have been so easy to add a B+A+START+SELECT to exit to the menu.
castelvania II is better if you sit down and really learn it. It has a very Zelda II vibe. need to get certain levels and items to progress. the hints are a little too cryptic and also the lack of a map make it difficult. but with resources on the internet or nintendo power and commitment the game is an over looked gem. it is just misunderstood. I would love for someone to make a remake and smooth out some issues that would make it much more "modern playable".
bubble bobble is the only one of these I don't have the original game for (that I want anyway) I still kinda want this thing. it would have been bad ass if they put it in a NES controller that hooked up straight to HDMI
old zelda is, they made that game with talking to people in mind, so there's things like you have to get a flute to get rid of water in a lake to get to like the 8th temple.
ZELDA II has an amazing battle system. you just need to have patience to learn it just like any other game. No matter the game you need to learn it. Look at Metroid or Zelda would those be accessible to you if you did not put time in them as a kid. So you feel familiar. Zelda II is just incredible if you look past a few things. Just give it a chance. It will kick your ass though.
The pie stage was left out of the NES version because of sprite hardware limitations. Too much sprite multiplexing would cause sprites to go invisible, especially on the same horizontal plane. Pies would become invisible and make the game too hard and buggy. There was a NES ROM released around 2012 on the wii with the pie stage. Possibly they fixed the sprite issue on the wii emulation but I don't know, I've never seen it.
Cool for the novelty but if you own a PC and dont already have a front end with some emulators and full romsets, then you should get on that. You can also get USB adapters and use the real console controllers and well as use CRT filters for the games.
Google tells me that the big Nintendo thing where he played Ninja Gaiden 3 before release (in Kansas City) must have been the 1990 Nintendo World Championships that passed through there (Bartle Hall).
Geremiah Benge Yeah, it was Nintendo World Championships 1990. I recall the thrill of playing Ninja Gaiden II (not III, as mentioned in this video) at the event as a kid before it came out.
The cords are short because they want you to sit on the floor and play, like when we were kids. But sitting on the floor at my age will tear my body apart!!
"When was the last time you played Twillight Princess?"
"When I reviewed it."
lmao
16:56 jeff: "i know the lyrics to this song" made me so happy
I enjoyed this review. You answered the questions I had about it and, it was fun to watch as well.
Great show! Thanks!
1:05:55 I think the public Nintendo event in Kansas City that Dan mentions could be the 1990 Nintendo World Championship tour. They toured 30 cities to get local winners to later compete in the finals and Kansas City was one of the cities.
Rather have a mini SNES.
I'd have a hard time narrowing it down to 30 for a snes classic. so many really great games.
Yes please. I'd probably pay above 100 bucks for that.
I bet if this sells really well, the SNES Classic will make its debut within a year or 2.
Then the N64 Classic
And that's it. Gamecube sucked.
jesusnthedaisychain Gamecube was basically a smash bros machine. Though I have fond memories of Sonic Adventure 2, even though I now recognize it to be terrible.
Hearing Jeff talk about Final Fantasy X is one of my favorite things. #myoldman
Hey guys could we get a few more comments on how it's called a quick look but it's actually two hours, don't think we have enough. Obviously it's people who aren't familiar with Giant Bomb but holy shit it's like every other comment
Oh no, I didn't mute Bubble Bobble and now I'm doomed to a week of its music being stuck in my head.
try 20yrs
poor dan right at the beginning - he was right and jeff was confused but dan got blamed anyway.
Jeff was right, actually.
Jeff was right, pretty funny good opening.
ElitistMagi listen to the wording. Dan was asking the correct thing but Jeff misheard him.
Having Jeff and Dan talk about old games for nearly 2 hours is great.
😸😉😊😒👌👍
The cartridge hatch doesn't open!?! Where am I suppose to stash my weed?
great stash place.
In the back of your Playstation 2 like everybody else
Time to practice your sphincter's stretching capabilities
XD
Google made me do it Did google make you stretch your sphincter? Damn dude that'd hurt putting blunts up in there.
Oh Dan worked at Game Informer? I really appreciate them having an FFVI cover for the 200th issue. That was so cool.
* extended silence
"this thing is gonna sell alot..."
i lost it lol
Fifteen Seconds into the two hours, Dan is already confused.
He's a national treasure.
I just hope this does super well so they make a SNES version.
Jeff and Peter Brown should go do their own thing. By far the most interesting conversations between the two.
they should make a tiny handheld gameboy classic
gba sp
I'm going to get one anyway, but I still wanted to see them check it out. Unlike other "flashback" devices, the emulation looks and sounds okay!
They killed it in this old review. A great example of Giant Bomb.
And gamespot too with Peter browns contribution

Dude! I love Dr Mario, Yoshi's Cookie, and Tetris! I love puzzle gaming and the music for those games were always great.
I'll wait for the SNES Classic
seriously that's what I want, snes was the best video game console ever in my opinion. so many dope games came out on that system.
If the cords are as short you're going to need a tiny TV to play it on too.
Im preatty sure selling out in minutes in every store it came out in is pretty good...
I got this one, I'm sure they'll do the SNES for next Christmas!!!
Actually, the stage with the changing wind in Ninja Gaiden was part II.
I didn't realise that FF was on this, that adds a lot of value there.
THANK YOU for opening the system up. I really wanted to see what it consisted of. +200 cool points!
For everyone who's confused by the quick look. A few minutes on each title is quick, finishing each game is long!
This is the quickest quick look in the short history of quick quick looks.
Hyperkin are bringing out controller lead extension cords. They are also bringing out conversion cables I believe to use original nes controllers on the mini.
In the TV show Mario gets his powers from the fire flower / leaf just by touching them, not by eating them. Pretty sure that's canon.
I'm with Jeff, some of those sound effects were the wrong pitch.
I thought the zelda enter cave sound was off.
Dan - Nintendo held various events in cities for the Nintendo World Championship... one of those events was in Kansas City in 1990.
I wish they would make a longer, more in depth version of this video.
If I wanted to buy another controller, where could I buy it?
A I. the same place you buy the console. There are a number of accessories available.
That intro pretty much sums up Giant Bomb's level of communication in one solid minute.
Cats Man although I didn't know I could load games on the portable. I thought it had to be official or something.ill have to check that out
DevinAK49 segaretro.org/Arcade_Ultimate#Using_an_SD_card I think there is another portable one that does not support SD cards, but there's so many I can't keep up.

A Super Nintendo one of these will be amazing.
And it was.
I'm devastated they never even got past the intro to startropics.
Man, stinks that you guys didn't get to the first action sequence of StarTropics. It's the best game on the system imo.
I don't know how I missed this, but hey, it's that guy what likes StarTropics.
This little thing would be great to have on your desk at work. Maybe the reason for the small cord length?
In all fairness, as a gamer myself, a quick look at a new console like this would also be about two hours....
I actually enjoyed watching this.
Excitebike you've got to use B to accelerate, but then lay off and use A to maintain at top speed. Basically you were driving in 1st gear the whole time.

How long is the Mini NES's HDMI Cable?
Is 1 hour and 55 mins a quick look?
>quick look
>2 hours long
Ryan Moffitt i know im just havin a bit of a giggle 😘
barfyman362 wow thanks barfy, youre a cute lil thang and i wouldnt mind tossing your salad.
19:42 The sound of that jumping/falling thing for my Apple II, which I think was ripped from Coleco, was mind-numbingly intense. You could probably use it as a lead for dubstep.

who's that guy that opened his ? seems cool
Old video games and old video game consoles are great

Hahah, man Jeff's FFX impression at 41:35 is spot on!
I wonder if we'll get drivers. When I plugged it into my PC is showed up as "CLV-S-NESY"
Wow, it looks really clean.
So.... you would be able to power it from a power bank?
Crackpot Cookiejar yep
I think yes. Why not and it's good idea
The important question on everyone's mind; did Mario ever eat sprinkly bread on the ground?
Dude should really lay off the gonja.
bubble bobble is the only one of these I don't have the original game for (that I want anyway)
I still kinda want this thing.
it would have been bad ass if they put it in a NES controller that hooked up straight to HDMI
Maybe Dan was at nintendo world championship in 1990, it went to Kansas City on its tour across the usa.
Just ordered mine 20min ago. So cant wait for tuesday!!
Double Dragon 2, Level 2 music sounds like 'Easy Lover' by Phil Collins
can you use the old nes controller? I need a longer cord
The Famicom version of Bubble Bobble had a different water graphic. It was a square stream iirc. Sadly the game will not appear on the Famicom Mini.
Happy they included Super Mario Bros. 2 in this. Poor game got snubbed in Mario Maker, would have been cool to make levels for that.
I love you Dan, but Kirby's Adventure is one of the best NES games.
Honestly Kirby is the only game that I'll probably be able to beat. Old Zelda looks brutal and frustrating.
old zelda is, they made that game with talking to people in mind, so there's things like you have to get a flute to get rid of water in a lake to get to like the 8th temple.
"Is there any evidense of Mario eating meat?" Hrs a plumber, plumbers eat fried breakfasts, bacon sandwiches and burgers every day!
this video is only a quick look of the NES
ALMOST 2 FUCKING HOURS LONG, holy shit
i know, it's awesome.
was gonna say the same thing. Title says "Quick look" shows video length of 1:55:00...
You must be new here.
This old chestnut.
Welcome to Giant Bomb
1:06:00 Dan was probably thinking about the Nintendo World Championship, which had a stop in Kansas City in 1990.
ZELDA II has an amazing battle system. you just need to have patience to learn it just like any other game. No matter the game you need to learn it. Just give it a chance. It will kick your ass though.
Oh no, the controller cable....That's a real shame. I sit pretty close to my tv and those controller cables are still too short.
Why the heck are those controller cords so damn short?
In classic Mario Bros theres a warp zone just go on top of the screen of the level you will find it.
The lack of an expandable memory option is a bit of a misstep IMO
the sound on bubble bobble sounds like crap. does it actually sound like that?
wow those controller cords are tiny. What's with that?
There's this thing called Raspeberry Pi 3 that can run up to some PS1 games
The pie stage was left out of the NES version because of sprite hardware limitations. Too much sprite multiplexing would cause sprites to go invisible, especially on the same horizontal plane. Pies would become invisible and make the game too hard and buggy. There was a NES ROM released around 2012 on the wii with the pie stage. Possibly they fixed the sprite issue on the wii emulation but I don't know, I've never seen it.
I agree presses is good for jumping
30 games seems too small, but the selection is pretty good. think rad racer would be a better pick over excite bike
Commentary for Ninja Gaiden: You were at the Nintendo Powerfest '90. You weren't playing Ninja Gaiden 3, it was Ninja Gaiden 2.
Cool for the novelty but if you own a PC and dont already have a front end with some emulators and full romsets, then you should get on that. You can also get USB adapters and use the real console controllers and well as use CRT filters for the games.
Jeff's Seymour impression, holy shit
Google tells me that the big Nintendo thing where he played Ninja Gaiden 3 before release (in Kansas City) must have been the 1990 Nintendo World Championships that passed through there (Bartle Hall).
Programentalist It was actually Ninja Gaiden II, but yeah that was the event.
such a quick look, of course i can stay here for an hour real quick
What kind of "Quick Look" is nearly 2 hours long?
I'm pretty sure it was the NWC you're mentioning.
Geremiah Benge Yeah, it was Nintendo World Championships 1990. I recall the thrill of playing Ninja Gaiden II (not III, as mentioned in this video) at the event as a kid before it came out.
Can u insert a cartridge and play?
Nintendo also released play choice arcade
Jeff shooting his own galaga fighter at 43:14 made me laugh way too hard.
The entering s cave sound in Zelda sounds different.
1:27:25 and later - I didn't understand the comment on Super Marios physics: does it mean it feels worse then the original on the NES Classic?
Man that NES Bass!
Oh damn, I had no idea that Mario Bros. was cooperative.
They missed something huge under "Open Source Software". It's running on Red Hat Linux. Therefore, the file system might be hackable.
First timer here on thing RUclipsr but I love his Sega Genesis stance even though I was against it back in the day. I might sub :D
I could watch an entire playthrough of Bubble Bobble.
Is anyone else having trouble plugging the nes through a surround sound receiver? I can only get it to work when it directly plug into the tv.
