Gotta immediately like for that ender lilies rep in the thumbnail.
Such a beautiful game, one of those ones thats just REALLY stuck with me.
♥
nice list, i like it, awesome games.. metroidvania is my fav genre, so ive played most of them.. one of my fav metroidvanias is Valdis Story: Abyssal City.. which seems missed in most metroidvania lists.. in my opinion it has the best combat of all metroidvanias.. it has 4 different characters, each one of them with unique styles, different builds, and weapon forging routes.. i felt that game was made with much love, while playing it.. also the intro song still haunts me :)
Thanks for sharing this! I've played quite a few of these games and enjoy them very much, I also appreciate these lists as recommendations for what to try next. Really glad to see Salt & Sanctuary making the list, as it's an unpolished gem of a game.
Ender Lilies is my all time favourite game. I still listen to that hauntingly beautiful soundtrack every now and then. I even learned some songs from it on the piano. I would recommend people who haven't played it to listen to bloom intro and outro and accolade intro.
The game is pretty alright at all, especially music aspect, like you said Bloom is really harmonious, for me Rosary is the best. However, I do think map design is unforgivably horrible as well as fast travel mechanic
@@hungtien693it’s a pretty forgiving map to explore especially considering how much harder other Metroidvanias maps are to explore get your garbage take outta here
Outer Wilds is 1,000 times better than Ender Lilies.
@@bestsnowboarderuknow outer mid
@@Gael-xp4fk Tell me you've never played Outer Wilds without telling me you've never played Outer Wilds ^
Where is Super Metroid??
great vid and . stacked my gamelist with a few I missed! great work!!
Nessa lista existem excelentes Metroidvanias.
found quite a few on this list that i did not know existed and look good. Will check them out :)
I think with time, Metroid Dread will be top 3 on lists like this. That game is so good, it blows most of the competition away even when it comes to 3D games. Great design, atmosphere, environment, challenges.
A total classic.
i cant wait to play it on PC. Oh wait, it doesn't exist on PC. So what I'll do instead is get an emulator and play it for free. Now the deverlopers will get 0$ instead of me buying the game.
100% agree. My first Metroid/metroidvania and already high on my best games ever list. And I’ve played since 89. Incredible game. Wish I could find a similar game of equal quality.
@@MrSvante88Prince of Persia. Really, it is heavily inspiree by Dread. It shows but it is so good.
@@tanzolo4487 I didn't play it, but looking at the gameplay videos, I agree the inspiration by Dread is clear which in turn proves how special Dread is - that it serves as an inspiration for other games.
@@PiCheZvara if you liked dread chances are you’ll like the lost crown 👍🏻 Dread is truly special
Afterimage and Ender Lilies are my favs
Thanks for the list
Wow when we got down to the last couple I thought for sure you were going to snub Salt and Sanctuary, didn't expect to see it number 1! Great choice though I LOVE that game!
good video. I would also highly recommend Outland and Flynn, Son of crimson. Both are awesome games, that should get mentioned more often. I finished both and had a great time with them.
Great suggestion!
Happy to see Afterimage there, especially since that game brought me to this video. I played Bloodstained and while I liked it, Afterimage was what made me really interested in Metroidvanias. Both in terms of combat and exploration... and later really felt so vast due to how it never tells you where to go next so it really felt like I was exploring the world, and several times I had fun exploring areas I was underleveled for.
And the art, God, I loved that game's art.
I hadn't heard of Astlibra, that alone (but not only that) made this worth watching. Thanks!
Glad to hear it!
I think Ender lillies was one of the best ones I’ve played. It hit all the switches for me.
it was fantastic agree
I was going to get it but I heard people say the mechanics where clunky and awkward so I never ended up getting it. Is it worth a play even though I love fast paced games and boss fights
@@xavierbligh9915yes, ender Lillies has the best and some not the best bosses in the genre but I had a blast playing it. Its a must play for any metroidvania fan
good list, i was missing few, thanks :)
No problem!
@@JoelRPG if you haven't try moonscars and minoria, didn't get far because i'm busy with other games, but they are pretty good...
I played Islets on xbox one recently and loved it, classic Metroidvania
Surprisingly, I've never heard of the genre but after playing Metroid on SNES via the classic snes, I'm hooked.
Song of the Deep never gets mentioned anywhere, but it has a lot of charm!
Interesting choices! Also Aria of Sorrow is availabe on PC thanks to the advance collection
as a fan of metroidvanias, thank you for this list! there's plenty I hadn't hear of. personally, i'd like to recommend Record of Lodoss War: Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth
Afterimage and both Ori games are one of my top favorites. SoTN and Bloodstain are great too.
I love seeing Grime on the list, such an underrated gem! It can get frustrating at times, but the combat and the world are amazing. Most bosses and mini bosses in this game are better than the best that many other metroidvanias can offer.
thank you soo much o7
Whenever Metroidvania lists pop up i always look for Dust: An Elysian Tale but never see it mentioned. Thats a great title, often overlooked
Or Outland but thats even more forgotten
I really liked time spinner, really good metroidvania. Have great day
Astilbra Revision is a fantastic title. Easily the best game I’ve played in a long time (probably since Crosscode). What’s great about Astlibra Revision is it is expansive, has an absolutely bangin soundtrack and it was developed by one man over the course of about 15 years.
I reccomend 8 Doors , a very nice Metroidvania =)
Nice video.
8Doors: Arum's Afterlife Adventure must be the most overlooked and unknown super good metroidvania of all time. As of today, doomblade and trinity fusion are way up on that list if not above.
Amazing list! But for me Symphony of the Night it will always be the number one.
Good choice!
I just finished vigil: the longest night. I thought it was awesome. Load times on switch are pretty rough but the story and gameplay is awesome.
what is the version of Castlevania SOTN you used on this video?? it looks like HD
This is one of the TRUE top countdown metroidvania lists ive seen. Only a true fan would know about deaths gambit and enders lilies.
4:04 lol that's the Mario World's trampolin
Nice list, so many games I haven't played yet. Would have added Celeste and Limbo tho
good ro see celeste on theee, such underated gem iykyk
Great list. Other than other releases in the IPs mentioned here (especially Prime), the only ones high on my list that I remember that I don't see here were Shadow Complex and Monster Sanctuary. Shadow Complex is getting old, but still stands up. Monster Sanctuary has an excellent MV-style world, but not everyone will like the RPG-style combat and levelling system in their vania. Personally, I loved the combination of the genres. Personally, I'd put them over several on this list, but I don't disagree that these are all great choices.
I liked Monster Sanctuary a lot but it felt like just a typical RPG with special progression. I think a lot of action and platforming for something to be a metroidvania, not just locked obstacles, personally.
Dust: An Elysian Tale is an amazing Metroidvania for starters! Clear visuals, cartoonish design, good history and many references and hilarious quotes in the dialogues!
I back to play índies for this furry game xd.
Is sample but 10000% fun
I came here to mention this one. It's wonderful, and never really got the love it deserved.
What version of Castlevania Symphony of the Night is in the video? The filter/effect is very nice. I want to play this version! :)
And congratulations on the excellent video.
it was texture mod SOTN for RetroArch (emulator)
@@JoelRPG ok. Thank you!
There are some games that not on the list but I really like. Like Islets, Lone Fungus, Haiku the Robot.
These games are attempt to be a good metroidvania. I would call them light-metroidvania
Tails of Iron. Definitely more of a Soulsvania but definitely worth mentioning. Solid game I got it off PS+. But tbh, I'm playing Bloodstained right now & it is the spiritual successor to SoTN. I had Symphony when I was a teenager & have never adored a game more. The Art design, map, music. Every thing works. I highly recommend the Modern IGA title.
This and Blasphemous are two who really deserve more players.
Good collection. Dead Cells is missing in the list :D
Ender lilies ❤
I SEE ENDER LILLIES IN THE THUMBNAIL I CLICK LIKE
I enjoyed ender lilies so much and as soon as i cleared the game, I went looking for a relaxing Metroidvania with less difficulty then i saw Rabi Ribi. The game look so cute then at some point, i find myself fighting with everything i had as the game just keeps getting more difficult the more i progress.
The game looks adorable but the difficulty made me forget about it, the game bosses are no joke.
I just finished ender lilies about a month ago and loved it. Just finished vigil the longest night and liked that one too.
Rabi Ribi gives off pedo vibes to me. I want to play it because I've heard it's good but the art for it has very young girls wearing very little and that is super gross imo.
@@knivesoutcatchdamouse2137 That is something that never even crossed my mind. I saw the game, i look the review, i saw the cute gameplay and art design and then bought the game, enjoyed the game and even went to explore everything.
I am not sure how there are people who even reach to such conclusion. i guess that explain everything about that person.
Y’all should check out Astalon tears of the earth. It’s a really cool game that’s not too difficult
@@Dan82W I will add that game on my list, thank you. I just bought afterimage. > < It is cool, the game boss is not as hard as Rabi ribi which is quite nice. I am enjoying the game so far although it kind of feels bland maybe because i have yet to get into the game but so far so good.
Great list but you missed the best one, Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom. :)
An often forgotten Metroidvania is Shadow Complex. It's a personal favourite. I would also like to add Timespinner as another contender.
Song of the Deep, Child of Light, Chasm, Momodora......I can keep going.
Might I add: Aquaria and Songs from the deep, are two excellent underwater themed Metroidvanias
Love the list and only 1 thing missing. How can you leave out Super Metroid? The origin of all Metroidvania's. Either way, great list and I will be sure to check out a couple on this list I have never heard of
It can't be a great list without super metroid.
yes. Aria of Sorrow has always been my favorite Metroidvania game overall
I'm not a touhou fan and i still loved Luna nights. The time stop mechanics were just so fun and it had some awesome music and boss battles
you would know why the music is good if you played the other 15 games they are good but they are bullet hell games and not everybody likes bullet hell
Good list
Glad you enjoyed it
I would definitely add Fearmonium and possibly Catmaze (same developer) on the list. And lastly the new souls-like metroidvania The Last Faith should be on the list as well. Certainly it came out after the video was made.
Moonscars is my favorite, it wasnt on this list but its a damn fine game.
Hey. Which version is the CSOTN in minute 16.31? Asking this because resolution looks much better that the one in ps1 or x360…. Thanks
its a ps1 version but with modded texture
Death's Gambit is great. Sometimes this list's dont put this game (or the youtuber dont played). Your list is a good one.
Afterimage has SO MUCH gameplay. Like I've been playing for around 30 hours and I'm not at the end yet. Maybe I'm just not good but it feels like a very dense game.
Touhou Luna Nights is amazingly fun. All the fun time mechanics really worked for me.
AV1 and AV2 are easily some of my most favorite games of all time. Thomas Happ is inspirational af.
You forgot the last faith also very good my very time favorite is off course blasphemous 1 after doing 100% 2 and hollow knight moonscars is pretty good too greetings from portugal
Blasphemous needs to be in the top 3
Record of Lodoss War: Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth, Timespinner (this is my top 1), Chasm, Omega Strike, Castlevania Order of Ecclesia, Momodora: Reverie Under The Moonlight AND Moonlit farewell... These are some of the best metroidvanias I've ever played! Symphony of The Night and Super Metroid have a permanent place in all top metroidvanias.
Which version of Castlevania SOTN are you showing ? It's beautiful with that filter !
Beautiful? It's butchered and looks like soaped poo...
@@Louis_Cyphrielwrong as usual it looks stunning
Axiom Verge and Blaster Master Zero
Aria of Sorrow, still play that emulated upon My Boy.
Simple, classic and enjoyable, with the immense castle of Dracula to search and battle through for all manner of goodies. The grind for those elusive souls allowing you to tear from your enemies both their lives, weapons and gifts in your battle against Chaos.
Supraland is very nice metroidvania! First person. Worthwhile music "Warum Warum".
Nice list! Aeterna Noctis and Afterimage are the best in recent memory, both games are massive and capture the true essence of what I look for in a Metriodvania game.
Glad you enjoyed!
currently playing Noctis so glad we still get really good ones now and then... Afterimage is on my radar too! I am so keen for blasphemous 2
@malazan6004 hell yes! But before Blasphemous 2 we finally get the Last Faith in October which looks incredible
Hey which version Castlevania SOTN is that? Looks so good
It's the ps1 version but with modded texture pack for the emulator
Hollow Knight is the best metroidvania I have ever played, alongside with Vigil: The Longest Night :)
Cathedral, Treasure Adventure Game, Monster Boy & Cursed Kingdom, The messenger.
After seeing Blasphemous in #9, SotN in #7 and Hollow Knight in #5: "What else do you have to talk about that would be better than these?"
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow was on point. I love that game but I somehow keep forgeting it exists.
I'm definitely going to check your other suggestions.
Nice list but you forgot Astalon!
AM2R is a must play,
STRIDER
Dust: An Elysian Tail
I played FIST on ps4 and PS5 it’s amazing and I hope they do a sequel
Blasphemous is just amazing. One of the most atmospheric games I’ve ever played and proves you don’t need a AAA budget to create expansive, memorable worlds that are as haunting as they are beautiful.
Strider should really get some love. I played and finished the one on Steam and it was great metroidvania.
Dark Light was a different themed cool metroidvania as well
castlevania in the intro, nothing beats the classic!
I am playing salt and sanctuary and really trying to like the game but i find it pretty unfair in some aspects. The graphics are a mess, some places are too damn dark with enemies blending with the scenario, the dodge/ roll doesn't work properly making some enemies/ bosses more difficult than it should. Enemies can stun lock you swinging their weapon and you can't escape a lotta times. The game have a big list of issues but i'm trying to like it (for now i have something around 12h in the game i guess). Bought it in a offer dirty cheap anyway.
And before someone can say, well i have platinum in Demon's Souls (PS3), Dark Souls 1 and 2 (didn't have patience to platinum 3 because of the PvP), Bloodborne, Sekiro, Elden Ring and Nioh, so playing/ beating souls like is not the problem that is keeping me from liking salt and sanctuary as much as i thought i would. But i will continue playing even though i don't like it too much.
I felt the same way, I like hard games and I hit roadblocks with that game that were infuriating
i played all of tis games , but I always come bacc playing Salt and Sanctuary trying different builds =_=
--- and also ma fave game in tis video was Astlibra
same :D
Bloodstained #1 for me. Loved it.
Gato Roboto is an incredibly fun one that only takes maybe 5 hours to 100% complete.
You know what? I never thought I would enjoy playing games on my phone but I recently bought Space Gladiators and the company that made it also made Brotato and 20 Minutes Till Dawn. Both are amazing and now I'm looking for new iOS games to play... Any suggestions?
Also, I recently got the Castlevania collection with the handheld games and I'm really looking forward to trying them all out.
I'm enjoying Astalon a lot right now and also Cathedral
I think Souldiers should be on this list. Salt and Sanctuary rules!
Спасибо за видео!
I can vouch for Afterimage. It's huge and provides a lot of game time, and even more to 100% it.
I've finished HK until I've got kind of sick of it. But watching this vid made me recover from it.
In this list, i've played Bloodstained Ritual of the Night, Ori and the Will of Wisp, Ender Lilies, Afterimage, Aeterna Noctis. I'm really in love with these games. They are very beautiful, nice soundtracks and well designed.
Ori is one of the most beautiful games created. Not only the graphics is an art, but the soundtracks are also beautiful. The game platforming and fighting is fair, not too hard, not too easy.
For me, Aeterna Noctis is one of the hardest games i've ever played. The fighting is not too hard (not easy either) but the platforming is really unbelievable. The designers really know how to make joke of players. I failed so many times in game just because of those sh*tting platformings. You have to focus your mind, reflex and especially need to be precise to pass those platformings. They really calculated everything in the game to make players get furious. The thing i don't like in the game is there are so few guidelines.
Afterimage is also a hard game. The platforming is not too hard. But the bosses are no joke. They attack super fast and has many annoying large AOE skills. You really don't have enough time to think and dodge. Invicible dodge is only got at late game which makes fighting early bosses is a pain, but that dodge only helps a bit.
After playing Afterimage and Aeterna Noctis, i say Ender Lilies is not really a hard game. It's much easier than other 2 games. But i really enjoy the sad theme and soundtracks of Ender Lilies.
What was the last game before the outro, the guy with the cape shooting the magic what game was that?
Aeterna noctis
Salt and Sanctuary is my favorite game of all-time. However, I do think that people who didn’t play the first Dark Souls would not understand many of its references. It’s basically Dark Souls remade into a 2D indie game, except that it’s even better and more life-changing.
Salt & Sanctuary is in my top 5 all time & I’d never played any souls games before hand, except for Bloodborne which I had quit after 1 day because I couldn’t figure out how to equip my weapon
I picked it up a long time ago because I liked dark souls, but it feels like a cheaper clunkier version of Castlevania.
Personally i suggest to have a look to:
- Strider (action-based, fast)
- Iconoclasts (nice story, good challenge)
- Source of Madness (ok, dark)
- the last Faith (very cool)
- Wildfire (ok)
- Chasm (decent)
- record of Lodoss war (very nice)
- Celeste (Alright, good challenge)
- tails of iron (nice)
- sundered (ok)
- Ghost 1.0 (underrated, in my opinion)
Their scores may vary, as their mechanics, but surely they are *at least* decent! Fell free to add some more, since i am addicted to metroidvania
nice suggestions
Out of the 25 what would be your top five that you would recommend to play?
In terms of gameplay, hollow knight is def my favorite out of the metroidvanias I’ve played. The story, environment, and aesthetic of Blasphemous just blows me away though, it’s an incredible game. Though, Super Metroid will always hold the crown for the genre. Favorite game of all time.
I'd recommend Valdis Story and Dust an Elysian Tail to all metroidvania fans out there
Grime is part of the June Humble Choice. There's also a Metroidvania bundle which includes Hollow Knight, Bloodstained, and a few other games.
I like the messenger.
I can't believe how good SOTN looks with that filter, I can even see how some might think it even looks better than the original. I'm sure posers will say it looks awful though. What filter is it? Gives me another reason to go through it again
Top 5 of all of time:
1 hollow Knight
2 symphony of the night
3 super metroid
4 ori and the Will of the whisps
5 ori and the blind forest
I love metroivdanias, but I also have a big passion the Souls Games, so Blasphemous was probably my favourite one of this list.
There is no game that has a more interesting Lore / World-Building theme for me. I love that dark side of Catholic / Biblic refences
