    What a wild adventure! Once again I am bringing you a back-country camping video. I spend most of my time outdoors on day trips because where I live I am literally surrounded by 1000s of lakes. I am not exaggerating when I say we have more lakes than people living in the area.
    This trip was on May Long weekend, In Canada Monday was a holiday so it gave me an extra night in the woods. Like most years, May Long weekend coincided with the walleye opener in NW Ontario.
    My main goal, beside living in the wilderness was to catch a walleye or two for shore lunch. What is a camping trip without at least one shore lunch? I did catch many walleye on this trip but it was a challenge to get one and cook it before the last day. The reoccurring theme was definitely the heavy winds. Day 1 was windy, I was somewhat racing mother nature to find and set up a campsite the first day. Day two was the gusts were almost double the first day. I only got to fish for 30 minutes early in the morning. I was able to catch walleye for shore lunch but had to wait all day for the 36+ knot (67 km/h) gusts to subside in order to cook my fish.
    The last morning I packed up camp super early, I was in the kayak before sunrise. The wind had disappeared and the lake looked like glass. I went to the spot I caught the day before and the walleye fishing was ridiculous! I was catching a lot of chunky quality fish, 3 dozen in 2 hours. The biggest challenge was finding fish small enough to legally keep for my limit.
    Not in the video but the story continues to get wild after I left the lake. I pulled onto the Trans-Canada highway to visit my parents 20 minutes away. Not long after leaving the gravel road I came to a unexpected scene. The forest on either side of the highway was blackened from a forest fire I had narrowly missed. The cause of the fire was a tree blown over in the heavy winds onto a high voltage power line. The fire caused the highway to be closed until extinguished. This was Sunday, it all happened while I was camping about 8 km away. I had no clue aside from a water bomber I spotted flying in the distance.
    On Monday, while eating fresh walleye with my parents we saw the traffic on the Trans-Canada come to a stop. It wasn't long before we found out the highway was closed for a second day in a row. There unfortunately was not 1 but 2 separate fatal accidents between Ignace and Dryden. That also meant I couldn't take the highway home. Since I was well prepared to spend time in the woods in case of emergency I decided to drive the opposite direction, towards Thunder Bay, and take a gravel bush road I have never driven before home to Atikokan. I knew of it's existence but could not guarantee a safe passage home. Anyway I made it home with a weeks worth of stories to share.
    I hope you enjoy this video. Cheers and tight lines everyone! Have a great open water season in 2024!

      That's all editing LOL.... being shore bound on an island for 10 hours wasn't too fun. Once the wind died and it was walleye flying time it got fun!

    What sweet island score! A prime example of how advantageous a low-impact hammock and stick stove can be, especially from an angler’s perspective. Even with the bugs I’ll still take a million non-biting flies any day. Love your videos!

      Thanks! Yes the hammock is a game changer, in the Canadian Shield it's hard to find a flat enough spot to pitch a tent, with the hammock all I need is two sturdy trees the right distance apart. And yes, if that cloud of flies were mosquitoes or blackflies I would have been in for a world of pain and misery lol. Cheers!

      i use to fish with my shoes off but those non biting flies kept biting my feet and ankles.

    Beautiful area, you got into a great walleye bite in the end! Makes up for the wind and bugs!

      Absolutely, the wind forced me to be patient, when it stopped the fishing was great! Quality and Quantity, well quantity of fish during the little time I had in between bad weather lol.

    Glad to hear we weren’t the only ones having wicked weather in southern Ontario… luckily those bugs weren’t the biting kind lol

      Ugh I know right? If that was mosquitoes I'd be dead lol. The wind was so brutal! At least fishing was dynamite after it finally stopped.... on the last day of course haha.

      Thanks! Ill grab some of that bug spray if I ever see it in the store. Ticks can be pretty bad here also, especially in spring.

    Oh man that looks fun brother - I've been busy prepping gardens, built a bunch of raised beds. Was out trout fishing last week & smacked a few good ones with Franklin, no pike though!! LOL

      Haha yeah building raised gardens is on my to do list this summer but no rush. Not planting anything this summer. Next year will be epic for growing!

    The wind eh, a fisherman's bane, same thing in Sioux, weather too nasty to do much Saturday and Sunday, however when the wind finally stopped on Monday the fishing was great! You had the exact same experience eh

      Yup, I only fished maybe 4-5 hours the whole weekend but when I did find the school it was some of the best fishing I've ever witnessed.

    I need to invest in a kayak. It would be great to get into all these lakes. Great job

      It is awesome. My whole life I've loved small boats like canoes and kayaks, even 12 foot tinners. Most of the best lakes in NW Ontario are hard to get into. No boat ramp, no problem!

    Great video!! Couple questions…
    (1) what is the brand and specs of the blue rod you’re using in the footage??
    (2) also what’s the name of the stick stove

    • @differentfins
      @differentfins  23 дня назад

      Lol that rod is a cheap fiberglass rod I've had for several years... Rapala Scout. 6'6" medium. The stove is made by Pskook, I got it on Amazon.

    Those are chironomid flies . Fly fishermen tie chironomid pupa patterns for trout . They are a major food source for trout . The English call them buzzers .

    • @differentfins
      @differentfins  4 месяца назад

      Ah! There are no trout in this lake but I know a few stocked lakes that have brook trout not far from this location. I will try to get some chironomid flies. Cheers!

    instead of gulp i use twister tales. white and yellow work well and they are cheaper than gulp.

    • @differentfins
      @differentfins  4 месяца назад

      It's all I used growing up and yes they will catch fish and cost less but what I really love about Gulp is they are biodegradable. If they rip off or a fish swallows them, it dies no harm. People around here still use minnows for the most part. $6 per dozen and you burn through them quick if the fishing is good or lots of snags. People often buy 3 dozen minnows for a single fishing trip. I'll pay $10 for a pack of Gulp and it lasts me several days of fishing.

      @@differentfins i fished in chapleau for 36 years and we trap our own minnows. we use twister tails when casting or trolling.,minnows when sitting over a weed bed. i like your videos.
