You should do a challenge where you have to downgrade your vehicle every time you win! (e.g start with Yoshi Inkstriker, every time you win, pick a vehicle with slightly worse stats until you get to the combo in this video)

#1 is practice, #2 is knowing exactly when you're supposed to press each button, and how much you're allowed to mess up the timing. when i practice a shortcut, i purposely do it wrong in a few ways to see what mistakes are acceptable

Honestly not a bad strategy
In a 12-player room, I'd say 9th is better as then you only get the "last place items".
Of course, if they're too far, it isn't worth it.
