    I personally really enjoyed watching Squid Game and love thinking about how this show will change how streaming companies think about content production. It would be awesome to see more studios taking risks on shows like Squid Game, and I definitely want to see DeepFakes to start being used commercially more often!

    All in all you are just not used to dubbed content in the US. You kinda forget about mouth motion missmatch. Only benefit I see, it’s cheep. You can use less experienced voice actors or translators to get good results without taking motion too much into account.

    • @JohnCooganPlus
      @JohnCooganPlus  2 года назад +8

      My point with streaming was that it’s newer and therefore has more opportunity in some ways. Most genres have moved to RUclips successfully, but not streaming yet.
      Prank shows on MTV became Jake Paul on RUclips
      Game shows became Mr Beast
      Discovery / science TV -> Mark Rober, etc.
      There aren’t as many genres that have moved over to streaming yet. It’s basically just gaming and politics right now, but I do think that most other genres will find footing in streaming eventually. But the biggest streaming game show probably won’t be run by Mr. Beast. It will be built by someone who thinks about streaming from first principles and disregards RUclips type content (at least at first).

Which is actually a lot harder, way more work, and more difficult to get looking right as well. They are fully recreating the characters in 3d and rendering them rather than manipulating the 2d video input with ai as a compositing effect.

    With a background in deep learning and a bit of experience with generative adversarial networks I actually considered this back in 2017-2018.. Didn't get beyond playing and coming up with a name (Deep Dub (duh)).
    I ended up not pursuing it among other reasons because I thought there would be too much competition and I didn't have a unique insight in the technology. I am honestly surprised that there aren't more doing this. I would think with pre-existing code and data you should be able to make a prototype in 3-4 months with 2 people. Not sure why there isn't...
    A key challenge I think is the translation. Just like good book translations aren't word for word translations I think you would have to (eventually) go away from word for word translations here as well. Perhaps you could go from German to English, since they are quite similar. But doing word for word from Korean I think would be jarring.

    • @JohnCooganPlus
      @JohnCooganPlus  2 года назад +3

      Yeah that makes a lot of sense. The good news is that Netflix already has human translators working on the problem of word alignment. They do their best for the dubbed version, but obviously it’s not perfect. V1 would probably just use the final edited video file, but V2 could actually use raw footage from the show to make slight changes to the edit as necessary.
      I think the problem with this idea is less competition and more market size. It’s definitely a cool technology, but you would have to sell to Netflix, Apple, HBO, etc and it’s not clear how you could get really, really big. Maybe real-time translation, dubbing, and mouth-remapping for products like Zoom calls could be a long term goal. Who knows, but something is going to happen here for sure.

      @@JohnCooganPlus I think your are right about scale. You should however not discount flow tv. Many countries, Germany, France (and probably Asian countries as well) dub a very large percentage of the foreign content. That said it would be hard to see true scale here either. I don't really think live translation in the classical sense (tourism, business trips, politics) are good, because the value of sounding like yourself here isn't that high (correctness of translation is much more important, and technology overlap is small)
      I see two interesting strategies - be a pure technology company that aims at an aqua hire + bidding war between the platforms. This could probably still be a 100m usd exit.
      The second strategy is live translation + voice modulation etc for metaverse. Quite speculative, but the value of not having to language segregate the metaverse would be huge, and here I actually think sounding like yourself is valuable in a metaverse context (great video on the metaverse also BTW)

      @@ProxyProof yeah, I 100% agree with you. The overall "media" market just isn't big enough to sustain a decacorn in that area alone. $100M seems like the right size here, but maybe there's something we're missing. Metaverse applications are interesting because Facebook research already released a paper where they can compress facial animations down for reconstruction in VR. Should be much easier to transform the output given that the fundamental features have already been identified by the algo. Definitely keeping an eye on this space.

    It's one thing to have additional audio tracks per dubbed language, but it's a completely different beast doing it with HDR 4K video. Doesn't seem feasible.

    Bring on the mouth re-mapping. My biggest complaint about international content is the gabber mouths that don't match the words. Re-mapped mouths, even if not used in every scene, would take some of the pain out of watching foreign language films.

    Tbh I personally watched Squid Game because it had appealing cinematography,therefore this mini games seemed interesting,that is the exact reason why Mr.beast video was also popular. Simple as that ,no need to complicate plot or write the best characters or their ambitions,just pure enjoyment is enough when you are in home bored and searching for a new show to binge + tiktok played a huge part on its marketing.

    You forgot to mention one very important factor of Deep Fakes.
    No professional studio can use an actor/actress' physical likeness or likeness of voice without permission.
    If the original actor/actress is dead, or physically/mentally incapacitated then the studio must seek permission from their estate.
    ... Unless the studio wants to get sued.

    The credits should go to the writer as much as Netflix. The script for Squid Game was out as early as 2008, and had full seasons fully fleshed out. Seasom 1 is only thr beginning for this series.

    For those deepfake examples, currently they could only work for situations where: The light is good and does not change, the subject is facing directly forward, the replacement actor is light and angled the same, the angles/position of the character do not change dramatically during the deep fake (head is not turning from side to side/moving around much).
    This is why you always see examples from the "zoom meeting"/"news broadcast" perspective, and not a fight sequence or dramatic shot. As well as with good light (very little shadow) and constant light level.

    The problem with dubs isn't the fact that the mouth movements don't match the audio... It's that the dubs are done by subpar actors and are edited in (audio) very poorly.

  • @cdarklock

    The key to the Netflix strategy is that they are focused on content that will bring in new subscribers, because that is where their growth is. And to bring in new subscribers, on a platform that has a strong content library representative of the industry as a whole, you have to reach people who are not being attracted with that representative content - people who are looking for TRANSGRESSIVE content. Content other platforms don't have, and aren't pursuing. The kind of content they can only get on THIS platform.
    The inherent problem here is that Netflix doesn't have data on the stuff people NOT on their platform like and want. They have to guess. But at least they ARE guessing; other platforms seem to be operating under the assumption that they have a buttload of content, but people are still not subscribing - it must still not be enough. This isn't how people think. Would I like to see some of the stuff on Peacock? Sure. But is there anything on Peacock I can't live without? Not at all.

    I was surprised to ear that in the US people watched it dubbed.
    In Portugal it's extremely rare to dub content, only younger audience have that feature and some animes.
    If that last technology that you mentioned works fine it will definitely be a game changer for voice actors.
