The confluence of the Two Rivers is why the French began the city of St, Louis., named for the sainted Louis IX in 1764. It remained a French centered city even after the US made the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. Napoleon made the sale to the US.

Welcome to my area of the country, where very few people visit from outside the USA. The Mississippi and Saint Lawrence watersheds are the old French colonial areas of the USA, as I’m sure you now know. The West Coast was colonized by the Spanish. The East Coast by the English. And the French had the interior. A lot of people forget that. Do French schools teach the French colonial history of Canada and the USA?

I’m enjoying learning about my home area, St. Louis, through your eyes. I don’t think most Americans are aware how much commerce is still shipped on the Missouri and Mississippi rivers. Come back soon and have your friends take you to dinner on The Hill, the Little Italy of St. Louis with some of the best restaurants and bakeries either side of the Mississippi.😊

Wow! I never thought you would visit my neck of the woods! Lol Welcome!! ❤
I love the Midwest because, like you, I love the green. I love the corn fields and country roads.
Alton is supposed to be the most haunted town in the country! 🫨😳
I love that any questions you might have had were answered when you got to the museums 😄 Yes, we Midwesterners love our classic cars. There's car shows all summer. I'm glad you had fun and enjoyed the trip. 💝

Hi Marie, I loved this video. I am very impressed that you chose to visit St. Louis. When considering travel to or in the U.S., most people (including Americans) think east coast, west coast or gulf coast. It is as if away from the coasts is a giant void. Kudos to you for venturing into the great wildness in the middle. I think you found that it's really pretty nice. I hope you come back to explore more. Of course, you could spend years and not see it all. I hope you have fun giving it a good try.

Bonjour Marie, so glad you visited the "heartland" of America. The Midwest is much different than the East and West coasts. It's sometimes referred to as "flyover country".
If you are interested in learning more about Lewis and Clark, there is an excellent book about their trip titled "Undaunted Courage" by Stephen Ambrose.
Before Lewis met Clark to begin the trip, he gathered supplies in Pittsburgh, PA, my hometown. It also has a confluence of rivers. The Allegheny River meets the Monongahela River to form the Ohio River, which flows into the Mississippi.

All these places you're seeing are one of the reasons America is special -- everyone was virtually imported here and the history of where we're from is stapled all over the country. Every European nation basically has a heritage that is celebrated throughout the states. Germany, Poland, France, and definitely Italy in particular have such a strong foundation of celebrating their heritage. I just happen to be a combination of all of them 🤔😁

I really like how you go to states/cities that aren't popular tourist destinations. Travelers think that California is Sunset strip or Rodeo Drive, but if you drive 25 minutes from there you will be deep in a forest. Drive one hour from Hollywood and you can be in a desert. The United States is so diverse and beautiful from Hawaii to Alaska to Puerto Rico to Utah or Arizona. We have both kinds of rain forests subtropical and temperate in a variety of states including the Carolinas, Alaska, Tennessee, and Washington. There are so many natural caves to explore too. The coolest thing is that you don't have to learn a foreign language for each state, your driver's license is accepted everywhere, and the currency never changes. I applaud your courage to be adventurous. I know many, many people who have lived in LA for 3 generations and never knew that there's a huge park called Griffith Park within the city limits. It's the equivalent of living in Brooklyn and never knowing that Central Park exists. I also met people who were born on Catalina Island (about 25 miles from Los Angeles) and have never left the island despite having a ferry that goes back and forth all day, every day. Thank you for your videos!
When I lived in Florida, I met a lot of tourists since I worked in a restaurant. I would tell them to go see the natural springs instead of Disney World. Or visit the manatees and ride an air boat through the swampy grasslands.
If you need some really cool ideas, contact me. When my husband and I travel the U.S. or abroad, we love to see the natural wonders of our destinations instead of the usual touristy trap places that just leave you broke.

Its also why I subscribed to her on my original channel as well as my newer one. Honestly Marie's joy of living & her love of traveling, as well as trying to remain positive, oddly fascinates me. Since she comes from the Land of the Gauls that is France, and alas we have a mostly Anglo-Celtic descent consumerist culture that is the New World of North America. Seeing her love of everything from McDonald's to Mustangs that have been fully restored strangely makes me happy. Hard to explain, but its just so positive to see this lovely French lady show total love & support for the United States.
Since my father died two years ago and I've had to make some other plans in life, I've been battling depression that has increased. So Marie's videos even inspire me a lot to possibly create my own content in the future. No lie.👍

The Lewis and Clark museum is very, very important and interesting. Thank you for posting. Maybe you would like to read about the expedition. Thomas Jefferson, the second president sent them in an expedition to find what was in the western parts of the country. They found the Missouri River and navigated all the way west, encountering many unknown Indian tribes and at times risking their lives. 👌

There is always something calming about rivers, especially those that take a lazy and smooth way to the sea. It’s even better when you see birds above just drifting on the currents of air.
The cars in a museum always remind people that the older cars were often unique in design and function. While newer cars are safer and easier to use, a person can still appreciate the American desire for the freedom of the open road with a bench seat, arm over your partner, or your rowdy pals piled in.
Another nice area of the country. 🇫🇷🇺🇸🦅🦉🦆🚙🏎

Hi Marie, in the Midwest 🥰🥰!! This was so much fun from the start with the St. Louis introduction, and then the Lincold Shields Recreation Area, with its memorial there! The confluence of the Missouri and the mighty Mississippi is a sight to behold Marie ❣ (I have already lost all my typing once, so I am copying it as I go (😵😥😊)) P.S. That plant was certainly enveloped by lots and lots of little bugs!!! I enjoyed that Flathead Catfish, which I have never seen, and the Pallid Sturgeon, Paddlefish, and 90+ types of fish in that river - wow! The birds are cool, with the national bird Bald Eagle, Ring-Billed Gull, Pelicans, Great Blue Herons, Canadian Geese 😄, and Swallows. You mentioned that so many rivers join the river after that point, making the Mississippi bigger and bigger as it makes the border to 9 different states while flowing down through New Orleans into the Gulf of Mexico. Ooooh, yes, POISON IVY (a big no-no I was told as a kid)! You captured the motor boat, that Dragon Fly, and the swirling currents of the 2 rivers joining forces! Oh cool, you saw a baby deer, all that greenery, the bats under the edge of the bridge (we have a huge bat colony here in Austin, TX, that fly out from under the bridge to go and find insects for dinner!), and then you went to that amazing Audubon Center 🤗🤗. You learned so much there about the birds and their migration patterns, and saw so many skulls and skeletons, including that recreated Archaeopteryx skull (😲)! I found the Velociraptor claws really amazing and sharp. The Warbler nests are constructed using mud (so amazing), and those Ruby-Throated Hummingbird nests were cool. The Purple Martin egg was amazing, along with the unknown owl, a Red-eared Turtle (?!?), raccoon, snapping turtle, beaver and blue jay (That is sad to lose 1 billion birds flying into glass every year 😥😥). Marie, there was SO MUCH to learn (that you taught me too) about all those bird types, like the Marsh Birds (American Bittern), Shorebirds in the Wetlands (like the Greater Yellow legs - fascinating names), Waterfowl like ducks and geese and swans who eat aquatic plants along with insects (The Horded Merganser ??), Waterbirds (Double-Crested Cormorants), and the Great Horned Owl. They have so many skulls in their collection too, like the Bald Eagle, American Kestrel, Wood Duck, Mallard, and Northern Flicker. (The bird feeders are like all my brother's that I have to go to Temple, TX to fill every time they go out of town 😂🤣) Those were cool life-sized sculptures of the final Lincoln/Douglas presidential debate held there (I also liked the Pope Animal Hosptial there). There were quite a few motorcyclists driving by, and I also wanted one, but as you said, they are truly dangerous however fun they may be!! Every single friend of mine who has had one has been badly hurt from a fall or a collision, and 2 of my friends died one day from hitting a rock and getting thrown over the edge of a cliff!! Sadly I don't think they are worth it 😥 - I'll just watch them go by. Wow, I never heard of the Piaso Bird - cool artwork of it!! What a fun lunch place with all the wall art, and of course you enjoyed that Grafton Fudge Ice Cream 🤗🤗. Oh Marie, you are SO right!!! That National Great Rivers Museum would take at least a full day to see and read everything that is in there - a fascinating place ❣The information on those barges was actually startling, to see their load and range capabilty compared to other transports 😲. I saw that kayak paddler, cool, and the interesting Horation G. Wright U.S. Snag Boat. And all those authors have written stories about the River, like Mark Twain (I have read most of his), Langston Hughes, Henry Bosse, and the Angerts. And the sheer weight and length of the locks and dam itself is pretty overwhelming, and requires all that concrete as a base to support them 😵 !!! Those white birds are beautiful, and the model of the bluffs is great, along with the wildlife is really well done. Ha ha, that long, narrow fish is like a needle fish! Oh wow, I did not realize they had a Lewis & Clark Historic Park up there (Camp River Dubois), and they tell so much about that famous expedition to the Pacific Ocean, including the fact that President Thomas Jefferson sent them on that long trip! The Keelboat was interesting, and the sign was right!! It IS hard to describe plants and/or animals no one has ever seen before. And as examples, they showed the Lewis Syringa flower, the American beaver, the white-tailed deer (I have some behind my house), and the braro or badger. That did look pretty cool to cross the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge at the start of the famous Route 66 in Illinois!!! You know, there WAS so much green you saw and showed us there! Oh my Marie, a beautiful yellow Mustang with black stripes and another yellow one, and then you ran into that windy rainstorm - scary!! I couldn't believe all the beauties in the Fastlane Classic Cars place, including that 1967 Red Ford Mustang Turbo and the yellow Mach One 💕❣ LOL, you said, "That's it! I'm moving here!" And that was hilarious when you were looking at the model cars, "Maybe I can afford one of these!" You truly did have an enormously exciting first day in the Midwest, and I am so happy for you that you did, after missing that flight! You deserved it Marie ❤! All the places to see, the nature to behold, and the hiking trails surely did make you happy though🤗🤗. That was just plain fun, Marie, and thank you so much for sharing all that with us! I just simply love your work and your videos and your commentary as you take us through these wonderful places, most of which I have never seen or experienced. Please do take care Marie, and I know I will love the next video too 🥰🥰🤗🤗❣

I live in SE Illinois. Almost exactly 120 miles southeast of St. Louis. Growing up, we'd go there quite often. It was kind of our "go-to" city, but from what I've seen as of late, it's really lost a lot of its luster. I think it's lost about a third of its population in recent years. But the whole Mississippi River area up and down the river from St. Louis is something very unique. Because it's a part of the North Eastern part of the Ozarks. There's all the river bluffs which give the area a really ancient look to it. Funny you were there in Alton. Yes, that's an excellent place to watch for Bald Eagles in the winter time, like in February, when the river is iced over further north. The eagles will migrate near Alton because that's about where the ice starts to break up. There's years where you could see over 100 eagles between Alton and Pere Marquette State Park & Lodge. We'd either stop or stay at the Lodge on our eagle hunting trip.

Salut Oui!! Along the big muddy river of dreams Marie 😃 🌾 🐦
What a wonderful & interesting place y'all discovered. The confederacy memorial does mark a terrible story of captured soldiers , the small pox island that's now submerged & the horrible conditions of the prisoners that should have been treated humanly regardless of which side they fought for. It got it's name due to a duel with Abraham Lincoln that was eventually called off , there's 'rail to trails ' nearby. I always like it when your delving more into nature , you could do with some binoculars when not zooming in with your GoPro, it's unlucky there wasn't more wildlife to spot other than a cute baby 🦌 , looks like a haven for all kinds of birds , swallows are remarkable at how they've adapted while aerial feeding & that there found on all the continents , Canadian geese your familiar with ( my american totem animal , yours is a snake) you do tend to think of pelicans as being further down south. Missouri's is more green than i expected , weird with it being so humid must be due to the storms they have , that dust up was wild , that part of the state is where Lewis and Clark western expansion really began.
All the museum's exhibits were amazing , some of the best you've visited , very enlightening , how often do you come across a 🦖 claw , after all birds are modern day dinosaurs , they have the same 3 toes. It must have been great at the Audubon Riverlands , it's a special site that needs protecting with donations , I like that you can listen to the various birds singing on their website , the US army engineering corps released a 🦅 back on July 7 & for biking enthusiasts it's excellent that there's 100's of miles of trails we can choose from.
The legendary Piasa Thunderbird was cool , there's a few different versions of the story & it's purpose , some believe it served to let travelers know they were entering Cahokian territory , the colour red symbolised war , black death , while the green represents the triumph over death. John Russell came up with the story in 1836 about chieftain Quatoca heroism over the monster & it took on a life of it's own , but the image goes back much further to 1698 , others believe it's supernatural from the underworld with the antlers that do represent spiritual power. Such giant birds did once exist & it's very likely the early natives could have encountered them , even during the mid 1970s in the Rio Grande valley of Texas witnesses including a policeman & school teachers claimed to have seen such creatures.
Grafton & Alton looked like lesser known gems , the Rivers museum was fantastic explaining how important the Barges were & still are to a lesser extent , there's big plans in the works with a spectacular veterans memorial about the rangers that climbed up the pointe du - hoc on Dday , there going to be 15 bronze statues climbing the bluff & with the 20th anniversary there coming up it will be a big draw with visitors. You can take the ferry to see the bald eagles as they nest during the winter , I saw a live cam recently of a pair making a nest with a big branch that was funny & the scenic drive through Pere Marquette is marvelous , maybe you tried the fried fish sandwiches they say are delicious 😋
On a finishing note , wow! the classic cars were awesome , it pretty reasonable with some of the prices like the 62 thurderbird for under $30 grand , I've seen a cobra firecracker for $34 000 that's similar to what you had your eyes on , the red 66 Mustang sale pending for $39. 995 looks good. When it comes to motorcycles you can buy a wild west peace maker for just under $9000 , I dunno know what extra it would be to ship it over , riding a hog like a Triumph with a cool helmet etc would be exciting as long as your responsible . A sensational start to your roadtrip with old glory flying high , the route 66 bridge was so tranquil , looking forward to what interesting adventures are coming up next , if your like to check out more music about the Mississippi River there's the singing Ranger Charlie Maguire playlist (I'll include the link) & homepage.
Merci beaucoup , passez un beau dimanche 💚🌟✌️

Oh that’s weird but cool to see an area less than a mile from my house on RUclips. I drive by Fastlane every single day. Been inside a handful of times although its been awhile. They host car shows every now and then. Kinda cool seeing places I’ve been like Alton as well since it’s not someplace I would normally associate with foreign visitors.

Welcome back! Or should I say welcome home! Love your videos, I've traveled extensively in the US for business but not everywhere. It's ironic a foreigner has to shows us the beauty of our nation! You have many friends here. Should you choose to stay here legally, you would never want for anything, you would always be welcome in my house and I'm sure many others, one thing, can you cook? I would really like some great French food.!!!!

I live in southwest missouri. Growing up we lived out in the woods away from the city. Even though I knew what poison ivy looked like I still got bad cases growing up once every summer on the palms of my hands. We concluded I got it from always petting my dog who probably walked through it a lot. I'm not super sensitive to it (some can just brush against it once and break out). I on the other hand need repeated exposure over several days close together. When older I had jobs, so was busy, and just petting my dog on occasion during the day wasn't a problem. It was miserable though. They icth so bad and if I scracthed it just would burn.

When you were in Alton, Illinois, you saw the life-size statue of Robert Wadlow. He was the tallest man in modern history. The Mississippi river is large, but in 1993 it had the largest flood in recorded history. In places when the levy broke it was over 10 miles across. I was hoping you would go up in the Arch.

Many river basins stay very green even at the height of summer. Mist rises off the river & keeps the air very damp. Makes living around it somewhat miserable in the summer too. In the south there will be air so thick rising from the river you can almost cut it with a knife. This can also happen all the way up to St. Louis & beyond.
