The Beethoven influence is remarkable. Even so there are cadence, harmony and constructive structure that substantially differentiates the two composers. Specifically the emotional nature and the formality of musical construction. Ries is not as “classical “ as Beethoven, his musical fluidity is more free. The second movement is of unparalleled beauty and elegance, it takes us to transcendent levels of incredible delight and pleasure. Ries is really a outstanding and amazing composer. His music is magnificent and magic because touches us in the depths of our soul. A composer who achieves this goal is magnificent and deserves our admiration. Viva Ries and his incomparable music. The pianist, the orchestra and the direction have a superb performance.

It seems that all of Ries' Piano Concerti are pure delight! I've heard #s 5 thru 8 so far, and all have been inventive and uplifting. The extended passage beginning at 18:12, an expansion of a horn call in Beethoven's "Pastorale"(?) shows Ries' genius; in fact, the whole Concerto is marvelous.

The maestri Grodd and Hinterhuber deserve praise for championing this composer who deserves so much than just a footnote in a Beethoven biography. His music has all the lyricism and life-affirming spirituality of the early Romantic giants.

I bought all 8 his piano concertos, all his violin sonatas, a few piano sonatas and a piano quartet and piank quintet a few months ago, and not a moment sorry for doing so. Sure delight! I definitely plan to buy much more him (his violin concerto, all the remaining piano sonatas, other 2 piano quartets and all his symphonie on my MUST-BUY list).

Yeah, I'm glad you did it! I have almost all his music and nothing of this music has ever bored me! (I honestly admit that Beethoven's chamber music, for example, sometimes bored me). Unfortunately youtube recently blocked Symphony no.7 in A Minor op.181 (which was not posted on youtube) and the piano concerto in G minor no.9 op.177. But I'm glad you can listen to this music at home.

Remarkable - I have to admit Rie´s kingdom was also subject to HRM the piano, as much as Beethoven. But Beethoven real "imperial" ground is the symphony and there, Ries merely "piétine"- But I´be to be fair - I need to hear to Rie´s piano sonatas and chamber music. A traditional way to get a more common picture of a composer.

Dear Sibarit101, some 11 months ago you wrote:, quote '..... I bought all 8 his piano concertos, all his violin sonatas, a few piano sonatas and a piano quartet etc. ...' unquote. Also the records are at a fair price..(usually € 7.99 per CD). this should not be an advertising i just want to share my love for this label. Enjoy

Well, I like Ries but the first movement seems to me a little fat. Too many notes to say just a few minor things.
