Germany has a certain feel to it. Its hard to articulate though. I lived in Freiburg and Frankfurt am Main. This was in early 00's. I never have been scared traveling in Germany. Then again I was not in big city like Berlin. Cheers from California

Official statistics are correct, but for Frankfurt you have to bring in account:
#1 Nearly all credit card fraud nationwide is reported here because most Banks are settled in Frankfurt
#2 Additional to its 750,000 there are ca. 400,000 commuters (highest in Germany) at working days. Per capita numbers don't picture this.
#3 Highest number of offenses against immigration laws caused by Frankfurt International airport (ca. 60m PAX p.a., biggest in Germany).
All these factors don't show up in for example Hanover, Nuremberg, Stuttgart, so the rate there is less significant.
If you eliminate these special phenomenons, Frankfurt is pretty average dangerous.

Interesting but bombastic: just cite facts
