I never played legacy but as a child I grew up with Age of Empires and I dl'ed retold recently. Seeing how you break down every move you make throughout all the game makes me feel very nostalgic and wanna play competitive now and apply those fundamentals. Appreciate the effort put here mate
Hey boit, could make a video at some point about tips for like more indermediate level players, I am stuck at about 1350 elo and I dont really know what to do to get higher than this . Great to see the fundamental series back though, your videos are always amazing
we played against each other on the oranos mirror Anatolia. i play this game cuz of u, learn from u. playing against u is like a dream to me ahahhaha nojoke!
Boit, you should make a video with your hotkey/ keyboard shortcut recommendations. I use a lot of the default hotkeys from legacy (e = house, r = armory, etc) but am curious how you set up control groups and the like to quickly select different units!
Thanks for that boit, i am new to RTS games really, not sure how you do some of the stuff, like cycle through buildings and when you click town center how do you also jump to it? If you could explain those to newbies it might help people like me. Otherwise vid is fire as usual
If you’re completely new to RTS then the best start is the caimpain. On moderate difficulty it should teach you the fundamentals and give you a taste of all the different play styles
With AI now in standard game mode I always just go for towers with garrisoned units. AI will say it surrenders once you destroy last town center but waits until it has 0 vills or caravans 99% of the time.
Literally ran the legendary 50 times over and have never been attacked later than 6 mins with 10-15 units. Not sure what I’m missing Yet somehow am 5-0 in ranked and never seen a single player advancing or getting as many units as quick… while also having same vil count.. These concepts def helped me win, but somehow have 0 effect on legendary ai lmao
I just found out yesterday that villagers in town centers increase the damage they do. I need to see if that hold true for towers and forts as well. The Egyptian Citadel power with a couple of villagers inside and a Pharaoh empower will kill an enemy soldier every volley. It's kinda filthy?
does anyone know are there similar maps to original in Retold? Like: Midgard, Anatolia, Oasis, Ghostlake are my favorite. but scanning through some boit videos I dont see any of these maps. are they just not played on ladder or not exist. Also dont see any real water maps at all now that i think of it.
I absolute suck at playing like this... I feel like my villagers are full idle because the hunt I'm on runs out before I can even think about what need walling off and then there's 15 cyclops in my base the the legendary AI is on 7 tc somehow
You should showcase short, medium, and long matches. It's kind of confusing keeping track of everything in a 30 minute game even against the AI. Breaking down each timeframe of a match into different videos could help. Minutes 0-5. Minutes 5-10 etc.. That way players can better understand win conditions and what their options are at each interval. Setting up your base in the first 5 minutes is fundamental and sort of straightforward. It what comes after that causes players to get lost. Some videos that cover each 5 minute interval of a game could be helpful. Going over the options available and what to prioritize based on what has been scouted. I think it would help a lot of players if it were broken down into shorter segments.
There's just so much "stuff" in AoM. I'm hoping over the series that this sort of information will become obvious to those who are looking for it. That being said if you have any questions on "why" certain decisions were made please comment and I'll try and explain there! :)
I'm just realizing there's a slide bar on the bottom of the tech tree to see the full civ's list, i have been using the wiki for that information like a fool all this time 💀
You certainly can get them, they're just bigger investments and thus are harder to use. The cost of losing a myth unit is generally much higher than the cost of losing some infantry units. Personally I like treating myth units as siege units that aren't garbage if they have to attack units. Boit didn't really emphasize it in this video, but much like how you *really* want your heroes to target down myth units due to their absurd damage bonuses against them, you also really want your siege units to target buildings because most units have high amounts of crush damage resistance. It's to the point where I often have my siege units on a separate control group when I'm about to do a big attack. Unlike siege units though, myth units often have good crush and non-crush damage, allowing them to get good damage on both units and buildings. Note that not all myth units have crush damage (for example Centaurs are quite bad at taking down buildings, but are really really strong against most units).
I've watched a lot of pro games and I've noticed that myth units are often only used for specific builds or to counter specific things the opponents are doing. You don't see too many of them made because they're expensive and use favor, which takes away from using God Powers/Forts which are generally more useful. He did build siege units, the Heliopoli, but I've also noticed that destroying buildings is a very niche part of the game and you generally only want to destroy buildings if there is absolutely nothing else for your military to do up until late game, when units can usually take down a building fast without needing siege. Generally speaking.
Myth units counter human units but get countered by heroes. If your opponent has not many heroes it is well worth it to build myth units. This is something I need to get a little better at.
boit helping players become better like in old days. goat

@@ΑλέξηςΒαλσαμής This series will go up to at least the 1400 level so you're in luck :)
@@BoitTV Aye that's amazing, thank you
Greek player spotted
I mean this is the best tutorial for AoM Retold. Thank you
great video Boit, keep it up the good work! cheers!
Great. Love these educational vids man!
that's the video i was waiting for!
That was utterly brilliant! :D Thank You for the video 🤗🤗
Knowledge is power, France is bacon.
Not quite there yet. Still have practice more on legendary AI.. This helps allot, thank you :)
25:41 that por donkee, lmao!
30:42 How did you switch from 7 to 9 archery ranges selected without looking at your base?
This is using the select all archery ranges hotkey normally control+shift+archery range hotkey. :) You can edit it to what you like in your hotkeys.

Practice keybinds. Iammagic has a video on keybinds too
Ctrl + a, s, d cycle military buildings
Hey thanks for the kind words. I believe I answer this question at around 11:50
With AI now in standard game mode I always just go for towers with garrisoned units.
AI will say it surrenders once you destroy last town center but waits until it has 0 vills or caravans 99% of the time.
Was expecting 4th point to be “If you decide to go greedy go all in or you end up stretched and gain nothing”
Would love to see another civ as well, especially stuff that are unique like Thor as it's hard to get 2nd TC on him

Second time watching this… it’s seems I didn’t pay enough attention the first time.
AoM Fundamentals. Let a Colossus solo your town center while your military and villagers are on a smoke break.
This is a really amazing tutorial. Now I have a chance!!
I just found out yesterday that villagers in town centers increase the damage they do. I need to see if that hold true for towers and forts as well.
The Egyptian Citadel power with a couple of villagers inside and a Pharaoh empower will kill an enemy soldier every volley. It's kinda filthy?
Yes they do. They’ve always done that in all the Age of Empires games.
if it works like AoE then the vills increase rate of fire by adding one arrow each, up to a threshold
Incredible :D you make it seem so easy, fuu
Just going through, your vids would love to see exactly what keys you use. Im a newb whos on played zues so was a great watch
I go over this in my hotkeys video. Search boit best settings hotkeys aom

HAHA no one said fundamentals are easy! You gotta work on them!
I respect Boit's dedication to turning the doorknob. That victory screen theme is indeed a banger.

To be fair, wikis can help clarify the subtle stuff like how the numbers play out.
But AoM is very good at giving you information in-game.
Thx for the tutorial.
QUestion: what is different about the fundamentals in retold vs. EE/titans specifically? seems the same. more or less..
no myth units then ?
Showed you don't need them and can use generic units
You certainly can get them, they're just bigger investments and thus are harder to use. The cost of losing a myth unit is generally much higher than the cost of losing some infantry units.

No myth units or siege units, why is that? Also im pretty sure the bots will resign after you destroy all of their military or econ buildings
