I cut up my 300’ rope because of abrasion and use. I cut a 15’ length around the bumper of my truck. Great tow rope will never break.

Damn, I was hoping you were going to explain how to coil a rope well.... and how to uncoil it well.......... because some of us may or may not still suck at doing that.

I try to stick to topics that haven't been covered before... or covered well. There are at least 4-5 capable videos out there already on caver coils and rope bags.

Great idea using the label under clear shrink tubing! As a nerd I'm obligated to ask if you've considered using a QR code and then publicly sharing a google sheet with the fixed project ropes? Not sure if its just more work for works sake but seems like it might be useful if someone came across it and wanted more info or to contact you or something? Just a thought.
Oh, and I have usually only hand bathtub washed the soap with a very dilute dish soap (plunge it up and down with my hands and then kinda agitate it by hand, then do the same in fresh water, then hang it in loose non-overlapping coils for a day or two... but I'm tossing it into my washer from now on

I haven't considered a QR code, but then I don't cave with my phone. On fixed ropes I do put the www.caveanchors.org address of the label so I can be contacted. I also put a liability warning tag on fixed ropes, but that might be something for another video.

@@DerekBristol if you cave with any camera you can snap a pic of the QR and then expand the data later... again, not pushing for it, but it is an often overlooked option. I can't wait for the liability warning video ;)

Hello we are washing only with water in Turkey :)

me too, I also never wash with a washing machine, only manually with a brush

I've had good luck using a front-loading washer. Never use a top-load machine with agitator. A mild soap will not damage nylon (polyamide) fibers. PA fibers have a sizing (organic coatings) that are used as processing aids in the rope weaving process. The use of a little soap will do more to remove these sizings than water alone, but using unwashed ropes is not in any way unsafe. The main benefit of washing is pre-shrinking. To avoid entanglement during washing I either chain the rope or feed it into a mesh bag.

@@azwarramadhan6183 washing with the brush only makes dust and other stuff go deeper into the fibers. The rope then gets stiffer and the particles are damaging it.

@@rikardoskorlic8878 I thought that the very fine silt you often find in caves can be very damaging to washing machines? The caves in Belgium I usually visit are all infamous for their horrible mud that gets on and into everything, including my ropes. My climbing ropes I do wash once every while, but they only come in contact with a bit of sand and dust, unlike my caving ropes.

@@rikardoskorlic8878Do you have any information backing up a claim like that? I've heard things like that but from what i've seen in cutting open ropes it just doesn't seem true, but I don't have a microscope or know how to do a study.

On an unrelated note - I am looking into getting a new pair of kneepads because my old pair finally have finally died. Do you have any recommendations?

    Hello Derek
I'm making a free stock video liberary on my youtube channel and i was wondering if i could use some clips from your videos on my channel.
You will be credited in the description and there will be a link of your channel added.
I decided to create this channel becouse, stock video clips sometimes cost creators thousands of dollars, just to create a single video.
This channel will feature smaller talented creators and hopefully help them grow.
Please answer if you would like to have some of your clips featured on my channel.
    Have a great day!

No. I don't make jokes. Caving is serious.
