I think that the main reason for the expansion version is that you only need 3 of the squads of stormtroopers because that's the trooper requirement, and we only have a month or so until the snowtroopers join the fray. It also has a few cards in it that aren't in the core box.
With the AT-RT and Speeder Bikes, there's both the cards and alternate sculpts for the minis...and I really wish that the expansion had a few alternate stormtrooper poses to add more reasons for the expansions.
It's a lot like the older recommendations for X-Wing that I remember. Buy the core box, then one X-Wing and one TIE Fighter expansion, then a second core box for a great starter force.

But you can bring 3-6 units of troopers, so two core sets puts you right in the middle of that number with the flexibility to go up to four units if you want to, and you can always pick up expansions if you feel the need for more. My point is simply dollars and sense; if you're going to buy one each of the Stormtroopers and rebel troopers expansions anyway, you're at $40 or so right there. Why not spend the extra $40 and get additional speeder bikes, AT-RT, dice and rulers set? But if you're looking to get into Legion as a single faction player on a budget, then yeah one core plus a couple of expansions will set you up pretty well.

I love that you are doing legion content! I’ve sort of fallen out of love with x wing and legion is occupying my whole mind

X-Wing has some issues right now. I hope that the designers of Legion can keep the game clean and balanced without breaking anything via power creep.

You forgot the upgrade that increases your precision by 1 which would allow stormtroopers to reroll 4 dice.

It's not included in the Stormtooper expansion. It's in the core box, which I'll be covering in a separate series of videos.

Can you do a video explaining the dice?
    Cheers.

This is FFG, they will add cards that are important and exclusive to these unit packs. Do you have to have them? No. Will you need them to keep up with the latest/greatest builder? As long as FFG has anything to say about it you will.

Actually, at least in wave 1 they're going about this in a more fair manner. Yes, there are some upgrades in the expansions that aren't in the core set, however each vehicle expansion (Speeder Bikes, AT-RT, AT-ST and Airspeeder) have a copy of the same "exclusive" card. Likewise the trooper units - the Stormtroopers and Rebel Troopers both have the Grappling Hook and Impact Grenade cards. So, if you're only playing one side, you'll get the upgrades you want without being forced to buy stuff you don't want. Will this practice continue? I hope so.
