ANON USER500 A year of Top Gear costs about £7mil to make. That's about 2 seasons or 14 episodes (they generally split two seasons over a year with about 7 episodes each, though this has fluctuated quite a bit over the years).
Most of Top Gear gains its money by the BBC pawning it off onto other channels across the globe, plus merchandise etc.
With RUclips, the lads won't have nearly enough fire-power in the merchandise area, and it'd be pretty hard to sell RUclips videos to TV channels.
Essentially, the BBC spend a bucket-load on making Top Gear, but make an absolute mint in return. To have the same quality, the lads would have to spend about the same amount of money, for VERY little in return in comparison. They'd essentially be making the show out of their own pocket.
That's not to say they wouldn't make a lot of money from the RUclips videos, but they'd have to rebrand everything, because the BBC aren't just going to let their top show slip through their fingers.
All in all, Top Gear on RUclips will never happen. I do, however, love the idea of watching James May continuing his Unemployment Tube, because it's awesome.

Dead serious: I wish James May would do more of these. He's brilliant at handling them; he's such a class act. The press folks could ring him up to ask what a good time would be, and he would give them a few minutes at his doorstep.

Such a patient man. It's in every reporter's nature to drag on an interview, even for eternity IF it were possible. And he most certainly knows that, but still takes the time to answer a ton of rather redundant questions.
Love this guy I never met, seriously do.

What an awesome guy. Even though the press annoys him a bit, he is so kind hearted that he still offers them a cup of tea and tells them when the next time he is ready for and interview. It's hard to find people like that nowadays, especially in show business, but then again the press can get annoying so I don't blame them entirely.

Generally English people are known for being polite, but James nails it, what a gentleman. Cheers from Portugal!
