- Steven Wright makes it weird!
Master of the deadpan, Steven Wright is a comedy legend whose absurd, one-liner style has influenced generations. From his Oscar-winning short film The Appointments of Dennis Jennings to his iconic appearances on The Tonight Show, Wright has carved out a unique space in comedy, blending surrealism with a monotone delivery that leaves audiences in stitches. Whether he’s talking about the speed of dark or pondering life’s quirks, Wright’s offbeat brilliance proves that comedy doesn’t have to shout to make a lasting impact.

I saw Steven Wright in Boston once. Halfway through his set he stopped and said, "I just remembered, my mother told me never to talk to strangers." and then walked off stage. And then he peeked back around the curtain and just smiled. Absolute legend!
Steven Wright is absolutely one of the greatest comedians of all time. ❤
"I woke up this morning and realized everything in my apartment had been stolen and replaced with an exact replica". Funniest thing i heard in my life. Thanks SW.
I’m allergic to cotton, I have pills but I can’t take them.
I have a friend who’s a radio announcer when I go through a tunnel you can’t hear him
Behold! The comedy gods have smiled upon us!
so great seeing these two together!
This is my favorite episode so far. I love Steven's honesty. There is nothing phony about him at all and he's a brilliant comedian.
Love the succinct, ninja precision delivery of his observations, and wit.
I saw him live in Vegas, (up close, second row-ish, center) I felt so guilty, because my brain is on a delay.
So, he’d deliver - no reaction, then into the next joke - Oh! 😂 the previous one just clicked.
If the whole audience was like me, how can he tell the joke landed, as opposed to the audience playing mental catch-up?
Rest assured that night in Vegas, the audience weren’t all like me, and the jokes all worked, even if they didn’t land in the right order for me.😄
Love Steven Wright!
Steven Wright is the guy that made me want to be a comedian. I'm not one, but he made me want to be one...
I think he'd like that one- liner, bud.
Steven Wright made me laugh once. Never saw him on TV again.
Apparently, you are one.
I had to quit my job at the fire-hydrant factory: All the parking spaces were filled with Steven's abandoned cars.
Craving is the root of suffering so he really didn't do you any favours there
Holy nonreturnable checks batman!
I just left YMH for this. Steven Wright was the first comedian i remember ever listening to. My mother had a cassette of his that i loved, and would listen to ALL THE TIME. She also had Robin Williams and Seinfeld on tape, and rhose were my introductions to comedy as a kid who grew up in the 90s. My uncle showed me Carlin, and next thing i knew, i was obsessed with all things comedy.
Thanks for this, i needed it
I wish I could share screen shots of my RUclips history verifying that I did the same thing 😅 I'll be back. But. I mean. Come on.
Hi Pete. Steven is my favorite. Thanks for having him on.
One of my favorite things is that there's this scene in the Jim Jarmush movie Coffee and Cigarettes with Steven Wright and Roberto Benigni that's hilarious as it is, but what cracks me up is that Steven speaks fluent Italian in real life and they play themselves but it's never brought up and I feel like that's how it would go in real life anyway. Cheers from Boston! ❤
Steven wright is my favorite! "I put a skylight in my apartment. The people who live above me are furious!" 😂
Two amazing people and comedians.... thank you 🙏🏼♥️☮️

The Joke I remember from Steven when I was a kid is "I spilled spot remover on my dog... and now he's gone."😢😮😅😂

"I want to get a tattoo over my whole body of me, but taller."
I love Stevens jokes!
Exact same voice and delivery/timing, yet with an exceptionally older gentleman behind it. Oh, wait. I am old, too! Love Steven Wright! 🌸

Been binging Crashing last 2 weeks, LOVE IT!
It's SO GOOD!!! As soon as I finished watching that show....I realized how incredibly well written and executed it is. Crashing has everything people loved about Curb with an entirely new lens. Pete absolutely CRUSHED putting that together and the casting is S'GOOD!
That's so nice that you met him at the airport
Aw guys, this was just a breath of fresh air. Thanks!

I can't believe nobody has commented on this already:
Pete, you are channeling Louis CK's airplane bit from his Conan interview 13 years ago. I honestly think it got into your subconscious and you thought you made it up, but you just adopted his bit.
At 8:45 in this video...
- You say that when we're in an airplane we're "sitting in the sky"
- You paint a picture of how spoiled airplane passengers are when experiencing "the miracle that's happening to them"
- You act out how passengers should be screaming in amazement when flying
At two minutes and fifty-five seconds into Louis' Conan interview...
- Louis paints a picture of how spoiled we are at "the miracle of human flight"
- He acts out how passengers should be screaming in amazement when flying
- He says passengers are "sitting in a chair in the sky."

Thank you so much for getting him!! 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
Amazing! Best guest! Steven living legend! Love him!
I love that when I play Civ 6, I get to hear Steven's 24 hour banking bit every time I discover commercial hubs.
Love what you're doing, Pete! Steven Wright is an absolute legend of the genre, and it’s incredible to see how he’s remained a towering figure in comedy throughout his career.
P.S. Thank you for continuing to champion language and comedy with such passion. I just finished watching Crashing, and I was blown away by the quality of the writing. I’ve even written a full paragraph and a top 10 list on why Crashing is a perfect watch for fans of Curb Your Enthusiasm. You did an incredible job capturing the painfully real and awkward moments that life throws at us. Bravo!
Steven Wright is probably the best comedian that’s ever lived.
certainly the most unique
A great example of being practically driven vs. being emotionally driven. Set the emotional bs aside and work the problem.
I have watched Steven Wright for thirty years and this is the first time I have EVER heard him laugh. You truly did something large here sir, over and over I might say.
So charming, just so charming. I love you Pete.
You got him the first time with the Galileo and the line at Starbucks joke.
Please do yourself a massive favor and watch him on Conan's podcast. Conan has Steven absolutely cracking up throughout the whole interview. It's a joy to behold.
yeah conan pod and his late night w/ craig ferguson appearances. he was on many times and craig could coax a geniune chuckle which is impressive in that format
My son "he's doing the voice from reservoir dogs" 😂
If only RUclips would let me DOUBLE LIKE!
I double liked this but it just unliked, so triple like to you
You know you are far out when you are getting too esoteric for Steven Wright (re: the flashlight analogy)
Match made in heaven. Can't wait!
opening a pod by saying "I don't know if this guy has anything to plug" is the most refreshing thing I've heard in a minute
The guy on the couch is such a powerful voice in comedy. That’s, a figuratively, literally and completely true opinion.
My first time seeing Steven was "the guy on the couch" from half baked. Later I looked up his standup and it was very original and funny as hell!
Pete lights up making Steven laugh 🥰
The legend himself!!!!
Anyone mentioning Mitch Hedburg needs to mention Steven Wright, too. Big fan of yours, Pete. Good to see you active (as it crosses my life stream. Wait that sounds like I'm pissing and we are crossing Ghostbuster piss streams. In life. That's not the image I want to convey.)
Immediately yes. I’m in.
A movie with steven and Emo Phillips would riock!

Steven Wright is my favorite comedian! I think it's funny that he ended it for Pete in an hour, like a normal podcast length 😂
43:32 "Thanks." CLASSIC STEVE!
Steven's amazing. He used to freak me the F out when I was a kid watching him on Carson.
My uncle saw him in the 80s. He actually heard him scream:
"It's great to be here... in Cleveland..."
"Woo! Cleveland!"
*"SHUT THE FUCK UP!!"*
"Can this be over now" LOL this was a funny ep. Love this podcast so much
Speaking of can this be over, Remember my name. I'm the next big thang 😎
Just LOVE this. Cheers to Steven Wright. What a brilliant comic. Thanks, Pete! I'm enjoying my holidays while watching your wonderful show.
I really really enjoyed this.
47:00 Exactly where I lose Pete is when he talks like this. I don't want to merge with a comedian. I want to relax and enjoy. I don't want someone trying to be with me -- I want us all to be having fun and have it mean nothing more except that we shared a moment of fun.
no freakin' way 😂
Steven- do you need a gardener this summer? I do gardens in Carlisle and always mean to drop you a card. 🌻😃
"A lot of people are afraid of heights. Not me, I'm afraid of widths."
---SW
In sports, If I throw a bad shot, I say that my width perception is off. I took that from this joke, many years ago. It cracks up my opponents, every time.
"I bought batteries the other day, and they weren't included. So I had to buy them again."
Thankya 🎉
The man on the couch. When I think of Steven career, it reminds me of the emoji of a man shrugging his shoulders.
That plane stuff is awesome. Flying in a tin can going 500 mph is perfectly normal.
That knuckle is working overtime!
Christmas came early!! Legend!
i got such a high listening to him talk again and even telling the casket joke my first comedian
Speaking of high, Remember my name. I'm the next big thang 😎
Steven could literally just read anything and it would be awesome.
The paper shredder is brilliant ! it's a Jeselnik joke !
Thank you Pete.
Anything Else is excellent, definitely an underrated Woody Allen. Seen it like 5 times
Gold!
He's right! We're like one big gyroscope flying through space. That's what gives us gravity, and keeps us from floating away. We're spinning a thousand miles an hour on Earth's axis, while our galaxy is zooming hundreds of thousands of miles an hour through space. It's mind bottling!
The point you made about this being something "new" is why I'm not worried about AI "ruining art". I'm sure AI will make a lot of entertaining things, but there are a lot of things it won't make which humans will, and those things always can and should and will exist. Just as photography didn't end painting, and chainsaws didn't cancel axes, and podcasts didn't end talkshows.
One of the best joke writers ever
We’re not afraid of flying, we’re afraid of falling
I love you Pete !
Saw video title thought oh cool this will be fun to watch later. Second thought was I didn’t know he was still alive.
I like the fact that this is a stoner talk without getting into stupid conspiracy theories like on Joe Rogan. Like, just general 'isn't it crazy?' stuff.
Pete, if you don’t name your next standup special “Heat Poems” I’m going to be disappointed.
This makes me think of that scene from Coffee & Cigarettes with Tom Waits and Iggy Pop, except with comedians. Steven is Tom and Pete is Iggy.
There is nothing I have heard exists that I have wanted to hear or read more than the jokes Steven Wright thought were funny but people didn't get.
I’m getting my mom Hostage Tape for Christmas
@27:10 I don't understand what he's saying in the last bit of the dollar store joke!! Do you think it's just ticket? what is he saying?
ooooh "take it", "just take it"
I'm convinced that at least half of You made it weird is an ad read at this point
Steven's camera really wanted us to focus on the hem of his jeans.
"The Stones The Stones, I can't believe..."
Infinity is an almost unfathomable thing. Look how long it took people to invent zero.
"Imagine Pulitzer prize fighting"
A very interesting comparative perspective from two comedians with different approaches. Steven is a legend and Petes pod is one of my favs for 'inside baseball' in stand-up. Great episode all the way through even with the few awkward warm up moments. This was podcast gold at its realest
The David Blaine of comedy.....
Infinity is not up and down. Infinity is not left and right or forward and backward. It is each of these things, but only as aspects of within and without.
our experience of consciousness is an illusion. our experience of infinity is an illusion. that doesn't mean those concepts don't "exist" or that there's no reality behind them but it is important to realize that the essence of our understanding of what they are is illusory. we may not have any access to what these things really are, if they are at all. but to the original question, yes, pepsi is in fact fine. it is as fine as anything can be.
Not when it contains corn syrup it isn't. Or when it's in a can. An aluminum can lined with cancer plastic.
A glass bottle of Mexican pepsi is by far better and fine. But American Pepsi is not fine. Not neutral. It's prepared as a toxin for you.
Pete Holmes & Lisa Gilroy - make it happen universe
What is about Steven's voice that is so damn cool
Massachuestts
His act is very low lazy body energy, mixed with very high intelligent thoughts. That contrast works for him. He doesnt laugh when in character. The slow drawl lends to his jokes.
Actually, i use the Dollar Store coconut oil in my Asian and Hispanic food recipes, I find the taste is better than fancy companies,
At the end we all become grumpy old men
Speaking of grumpy old men, Remember my name. I'm the next big thang 😎
This conversation belongs in the Smithsonian!
Mushrooms are a hell of a drug. ✌️
I bought a paper shredder, the manual was the first to go...my edit.
All the talk at the front of the episode was excruciating
1:03:36 Lorne Armstrong
the man himself
Dude, you are a productionalist, Steven is an observationalist.
🎉😂
Dr Emil Reingold himself.
Out of everything great about horace and pete Wright's question for the nyc mayor in the show probably stole the entire season.
7:00 until the relevant stuff.
Bucky Goldstein!
A small piece of gaff tape will hide that advertisement.
This would be a terrible ad for jeans.
The best... Around.. no one cares if he is down. JK love you lots
