I said “I’m hesitant to do that” rather than “No, I won’t do that” to training an employee, and that I’ll train someone else. Due to the fact that employee is verbally abusive to me and toxic. My manager said, “to be successful in your career, you have to work with ppl you don’t like.” I’m quitting this job I love, that I’m really great at. I can’t be abused at work anymore. Sad, but had to move on.
This is something motivation videos will not tell you. The listener is not a clueless wall l. They will have a reaction. And just saying no or being assertive will not change their already abusive or manipulative behaviour.
I don't owe anything to anyone. I shouldn't have to explain why I can't meet their demands. A simple no sorry I have other obligations, should suffice!
I have learned to say no in my late 30's and now I'm 43... I can't always say no; however IF I have other priorities that is above and beyond then I say no. For example...doing someone elses job and having to neglect my own work. I hate it.
Any advice for when you're trying to balance between work and study, your manager keeps wanting to give you hours, but just want to go home early to catch up on assignments?
You have to hold the line strong, and say unfortunately I cannot tonight. They’ll push back and say unfortunately I can’t cancel. And they’ll push more and say, this happens frequently it sounds like we need to hire more staff, I wish I could help but I need to study tonight
Madeline, could you do a vid on jobs with too many responsibilities? Should people looking for a straight forward job consider these? How and when should people quit these type of jobs? Thanks for your work.
Would love to hear more about this - what do you mean by jobs with too many responsibilities? What has been your personal experience with this, that may help me to understand :) Also I'm SO glad you are recommending video topics, that is my favorite :)
I just quit my previous job that had 21 different job responsibilities and had expectations of working 50+ hour weeks + on-call 24/7. I was told the job was entry level but industry veterans told me that they wouldn't have even considered taking it on. I'd like to hear your thoughts on bloated positions like these. Thanks Madeline!
Great this was so so helpful, really comprehensive and thoroughly explained ? also this keyboard is slowing me down right now and not letting me type as quick as I need to !
Okay what of you just got hired and there was work backlog so your boss asks you to come in on a public holiday. How can I get around that? I feel like by accepting I've made it seem like I just set myself up for future boundary breaking. Sigh.
I would answer in the lines how are you going to handle that? Is it going to be extra Holliday pay or if it is salaried position would you get time off during the week?
@@SelfMadeMillennial Why i asked...cause the department used to be dead and boring and then i started this thing of buyimh birthday presents to cheer ppl up and it became a department thing. But now most of those ppl left, died, etc...and the new ones here turned out to be fake, hyproctical and dishonest. So while i still remain professional, i want nothing to do with them. I mean they dont even take responsibility for their errors that are work related
Ok....i have a huge issue. My boss is amazing, I love her and her family dearly...however after her 2nd baby... She is struggling with being stuck at home 24\7. And is trying to come back to work slowly. She has a sitter for the 1 day she works. However,,,the days I work (50+hrs wk) she brings her kids in, and expects me to babysit while she (works aka sits on her laptop) for the whole day.., her kids are 2yr and 9 months.. I'm about 12 years older, and raised my twins and daughter... I have had issues after having twins. My ribs float and I have had surgeries for other things. My body cannot take watching 2 kids, while running a busy store. I have told her, I cannot hold your (very thick) child, and she knows I am having issues...but she refuses to stop this. I'm at a breaking point. My only time off, is spent in bed recuperating from the workload. It's hot, I'm hitting menopause, and the last thing I want, is a heavy pee soaked child on my hip, toddler at my feet, while working A register. ..i love her dearly....but God.....im too old for this.
To avoid any legal repercussions, you can email her about these problems in your comment. It will help you prove innocence if she ever tried to blame you for any child getting hurt near your presence
Thank you. Good tip in theory. Tried most of it. But, does not always work if you have a stubborn, demanding Boss. I guess I only have to stick to tip no 1. and if he still insisted and continued nagging (which had happened and will continue), I have to start procastinating from my end.
They will still say do it.. it's just 5 mins .. u need to start learning how to be more quick and do more Task .. end of the day ur wrong and ur boss is right .. period .
My female colleague is constantly asked to translate, drive, being an assistant, while her job is to work with me. It doesn't change too much on the workflow but she probably feel the boss takes advantage of her and not me.

I say NO all the time. People noticeably pause before approaching me.

This is probably the best professional coaching video I have ever seen on this particular subject. Kudos to you I learnt something valuable today.
boss: Could you turn the heat up?
me: I quit
boss: hahaha

How do you handle the request "can't you just multitask and all of it at once" to #1 answer?
How to respond when your boss ask you to adjust your work shift schedule for a meeting?

Say no to corporate law

What can I do?
Don't take care of the children. Let them fall or get hurt sometimes. Her children are not your responsibility even legally.
To avoid any legal repercussions, you can email her about these problems in your comment. It will help you prove innocence if she ever tried to blame you for any child getting hurt near your presence
I've said no twice & been fired for it.
Doesn't work

Thanks, space cadet. Don't forget your meds
If the boss isn't a grey haired white guy it causes mayhem and people don't like it
It's so much easier to say no if you're a woman.
How so?
Not really I’ve lost track of how many times I say no and people still try to boss me around!
My female colleague is constantly asked to translate, drive, being an assistant, while her job is to work with me. It doesn't change too much on the workflow but she probably feel the boss takes advantage of her and not me.
As she talks to us from her bathroom 🙄🙄🙄
